MEMORIAL DAY Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II. Decoration Day and then Memorial Day used to be held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week, on which it fell. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends. This meant that from 1971, Memorial Day holiday has been officially observed on the last Monday in May. However, it took a longer period for all American states to recognize the new date. In traditional observance, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all. Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act adds the flying of the POW-MIA flag on all Federal and U.S. Military Installations on Memorial Day. The POW-MIA flag is to be half-staffed until noon along with the National flag. Other traditional observances included wearing red poppies, visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes, and visiting memorials. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Memorial Day has become less of an occasion of remembrance. Many people choose to hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on this weekend. This day is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season for cultural events. For the fashion conscious, it is seen as acceptable to wear white clothing, particularly (Continue on page 2)

shoes from Memorial Day until Labor Day. However, fewer and fewer people follow this rule and many wear white clothing throughout the year. Traditional observance of Memorial Day has diminished over the years and many Americans have forgotten the meaning and traditions of the day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored or neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed in December 2000. It asks that at 3 p.m. local time all Americans “voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of Remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to Taps.” So let us take time from our busy Memorial Day on May 29, 2017 to remember and honor our men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. military so that we could continue to enjoy the freedoms that we have today. Also, say “thank you” to the ones who are still living who served their country in the time of need and to those who are serving presently.

The family of Kristy (Gehlhausen) Casebolt wishes to say thank you to everyone that said a prayer, sent a card, sent a gift, flowers or money for Kristy’s children’s education fund, called or thought of us that day. We cannot begin to express our gratitude for the out-pouring of love shown to all of us during this sad time whether it be at the funeral home or at the church. We would like to say a special thank you to Pastor JT Hills for the beautiful service and for being there that day with us when we learned of Kristy's passing. It meant a lot. We would like to say thank you to all who did door service at the funeral home. It was greatly appreciated. We would like to say thank you to the folks who either brought a dish or served at the funeral meal after the service. The meal was greatly appreciated by all the family. We would like to say thank you to Sheilda for doing the bulletins and for just being there as a friend. We would like to say thank you to Jane Upmeyer for changing her schedule to play at Kristy's funeral and for the beautiful music Jane and Sharilyn Franzman provided. You have no idea how much that meant to us especially me (Lea Ann). We would like to say thank you to Kelse for running the sound system and playing the special music we had downloaded for the service. I (Lea Ann) would like to say thank you to Mary Emma Owen. The prayer shawl is beautiful, and I will treasure it always. Thank you for knitting it. It was greatly appreciated. Also, thank you council members for the locket and your contribution to Kristy’s children’s education fund. Your kindness gives me great comfort. Thank you, church family!

On June 11, 2017 we will hold a congregation meeting immediately following worship service. At this time, we will nominate and elect three new Church Council members. The nominees submitted to and approved by the council at the May meeting are: Nancy Ress, Mark Fenn, and Sean Risse. The council members whose terms will expire are: Lea Ann Gehlhausen, Ann Swaney, and Glen Griepenstroh. I hope you will be able to attend and participate in this important part of the life of our church.

Please Note: Because The Caller has quite a few pages this month, only 5 of the team reports have been published in this May issue of The Caller. The other 4 team reports will be published in the June issue of The Caller. Page 11

2016 Yearly Report for the Church Growth/Mission Team April 2017 Submitted by: Linda Kramer 2016 Team Members: Jo Sodrel, Council Rep., Linda Kramer, Chairperson, Jerry Belcher, Dixie Dickerson, Julie Hauser, Gretchen Hawhee, Monica & James Holmes, Dottie Kessner, Gary Morton, Steve Owen, Nicole Risse, & Allison Zoglman On February 21, 2016, we had a Chili Luncheon in Fellowship Hall after worship. We sold 14 gallons of chili. Each member of the Church Growth/Mission Team donated 2 gallons of chili. Ann Swaney, Lois Curl, and Irv Rueger also donated chili. We asked the members of the congregation to donate desserts. We had a good turnout and raised $373.00 which we donated to the EUCC Emergency Fund. On April 23, 2016 our team had a “Day of Service”. This was a community service day where members of churches and the community helped others in some way. Six members of our church helped weed and mulch flowerbeds in the Little League parking lot on 10th and Hermann Street. We continued to have Coffee Hour after worship until September 2016. We put it on hold because Faith Formation Classes were going to be held after worship. We decided that Coffee Hour would conflict with those Sunday School classes. Our team sold cotton candy at the Street Fair on September 17, 2016. We were stationed in the Gazebo along with the Benevolent Team who sold drinks. We made $66.00 on the Cotton Candy. Jo Sodrel allowed us to use the Cotton Candy machine that belongs to the Horse Rescue Group. The Music & Worship Team and our team had the annual food drive in November. The congregation donated 928 items to the Food Pantries in the community. Our goal was 1,000 items. We changed our time for our team to meet to the 2nd Sunday of the month at 4:00 p.m. We discussed a vision of ideas and action for growth in our church in 2017: We wanted to get at least 10 members on our Church Growth/Mission Team by the end of 2016. We now have 11 members on our team. 1. We would like to help in trying to get 25 new members in our church by the end of 2017. 2. Have a Greeting Team to welcome visitors each Sunday and give them a small gift such as a pen & bookmark with our church’s name & address. Jerry Belcher & Dot Kessner said that they would be on this team 3. Visitation/Church Growth Team in place by the end of 2017. Team members would knock on doors and tell people about our church and invite them to come. Would need training for team members who would do this. 4. Have a Mission Trip in the summer of 2017. (Continued on page 15)

Page 14

(Continued from page 14)

5. Continue having Game Night the 2nd Sunday of the month. Need for people to invite others who do not belong to our church to this. Also, discussed having something like Trivia Night or Euchre Night for others in the community to come. This will take some planning, so we talked about doing it later in 2017. 6.

Purchase signs for church members to put up in their yards with Christian message to advertise our church. Jerry Belcher also checked on the cost of a billboard, but we decided it was too costly to do the billboard.
