MDEA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PRESENTS
KYLE COLLINS
SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKEUP
Special Effects Makeup: Blood, Bruises, & Deconstructing Special Effects (Gr. 9-12)
In this seminar, you will be introduced to the Blood, Guts, & Gore – Special Effects Makeup unit that Kyle has been utilizing to great success for the past six years. This unit helps to appeal to the artistic and hands-on artists in the theatre classroom. In this workshop, you will learn the materials used to create stage effects and how to use them; how to construct two basic effects with minimal effort, time, and materials. Kyle Collins is a performing arts teacher in the Winnipeg School Division. He has appeared on stage and screen for the past 20 years. Kyle has directed professionally for the stage in British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba. Kyle was mentored by Robert Dougherty, 2012 recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, in his final year of university. He has a dog named Charlie and has a weakness for pumpkin ice cream. It should be noted that Batman and Kyle have never been photographed together. Coincidence? Who can say for certain. The most popular mainstream productions today are featuring more and more of the grotesque on screen. From The Walking Dead to Game of Thrones, it seems that the media is pushing the boundaries of what gory and violent images can be shown. There is no escaping it, and young adults (specifically teenagers) love it. Instead of hiding from this reality, we should embrace it and examine it. In this workshop, Kyle Collins introduces, demonstrates, deconstructs, and guides the creation of special effects on the stage and screen. Instead of revulsion at the site of a zombie creature shuffling towards its prey with an eight-inch piece of glass jutting from its eye, we examine the tools, techniques, and materials likely used to create the effect; thereby taking its power away.
