10th​ ​November​ ​2017 Year​ ​8​ ​Medieval​ ​Journey Dear​ ​Parents, We​ ​are​ ​planning​ ​to​ ​take​ ​the​ ​Year​ ​8​ ​Individuals​ ​and​ ​Societies​ ​classes​ ​on​ ​a​ ​‘medieval​ ​journey’’​ ​on: ● ●

23rd​ ​May​ ​to​ ​24th​ ​May​ ​2018​ ​–​ ​Ms.​ ​Mart​ ​(HR​ ​i)​ ​and​ ​Mr​ ​Coates​ ​(HR​ ​b)​ ​–​ ​Group​ ​1 24th​ ​May​ ​to​ ​25th​ ​May​ ​2018​​ ​–​ ​Mr​ ​Reid​ ​(HR​ ​o)​ ​ ​and​ ​Madame​ ​Moenne/Bosson​ ​(French)​ ​– Group​ ​2

The​ ​journey​ ​includes​ ​an​ ​overnight​ ​stay​ ​at​ ​the​ ​Hotellerie​ ​Foyer​ ​Franciscain​ ​-​ ​St.Maurice,​ ​with​ ​an evening​ ​meal,​ ​breakfast​ ​and​ ​picnic​ ​lunch.​ ​ ​The​ ​students​ ​will​ ​need​ ​to​ ​provide​ ​their​ ​own​ ​packed​ ​lunch for​ ​the​ ​first​ ​day​ ​of​ ​the​ ​trip. Itinerary: ● A​ ​visit​ ​to​ ​Lausanne​ ​Cathedral​ ​to​ ​study​ ​the​ ​famous​ ​rose​ ​glass​ ​window​ ​and​ ​history​ ​of​ ​the​ ​building. This​ ​enables​ ​the​ ​students​ ​to​ ​understand​ ​the​ ​importance​ ​of​ ​the​ ​farming​ ​calendar​ ​in​ ​medieval​ ​times. ● A​ ​visit​ ​to​ ​the​ ​Château​ ​de​ ​Chillon​ ​to​ ​look​ ​at​ ​medieval​ ​castle​ ​architecture​ ​in​ ​Europe​ ​and​ ​learn​ ​about the​ ​geographical​ ​and​ ​medieval​ ​history​ ​of​ ​our​ ​host​ ​country​ ​in​ ​the​ ​‘arc​ ​lémanique’​ ​region. ● A​ ​tour​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Abbaye​ ​de​ ​St.Maurice​ ​site​ ​and​ ​its​ ​unique​ ​treasures,​ ​some​ ​of​ ​which​ ​date​ ​back​ ​to Roman​ ​times​ ​and​ ​to​ ​the​ ​period​ ​of​ ​Charlemagne.​ ​This​ ​will​ ​tie​ ​into​ ​our​ ​“Medieval​ ​Europe​ ​unit”. ● A​ ​guided​ ​walk​ ​around​ ​the​ ​fairy​ ​caves​ ​at​ ​St.​ ​Maurice​ ​to​ ​explore​ ​the​ ​natural​ ​landscape​ ​of​ ​the​ ​area. ● A​ ​guided​ ​walk​ ​around​ ​the​ ​salt​ ​mines​ ​at​ ​Bex​ ​that​ ​were​ ​originally​ ​used​ ​by​ ​the​ ​Romans​ ​and​ ​are​ ​still being​ ​excavated​ ​today.​ ​This​ ​will​ ​enable​ ​the​ ​students​ ​to​ ​make​ ​a​ ​comparison​ ​of​ ​natural​ ​caves​ ​and manmade​ ​mines.​ ​. Cost: The​ ​total​ ​cost​ ​of​ ​this​ ​trip​ ​will​ ​be​ ​approximately​ ​CHF195.00​ ​per​ ​student.​ ​This​ ​will​ ​include: ● Transport​ ​for​ ​two​ ​days​ ​on​ ​trains​ ​and​ ​boats,​ ​the​ ​hire​ ​of​ ​a​ ​postal​ ​bus​ ​for​ ​part​ ​of​ ​the​ ​journey​ ​– approximately​ ​CHF​ ​66 ● Food​ ​and​ ​overnight​ ​stay​ ​(including​ ​a​ ​classroom​ ​at​ ​the​ ​monastery)​ ​–​ ​approximately​ ​CHF 79 ● Entrance​ ​fees​ ​and​ ​guided​ ​tours​ ​to​ ​all​ ​public​ ​sites​ ​–​ ​approximately​ ​CHF​ ​41 ● Miscellaneous​ ​items​ ​e.g.​ ​photocopying,​ ​ice​ ​cream​ ​etc​ ​–​ ​approximately​ ​CHF​ ​9 We​ ​will​ ​meet​ ​at​ ​Geneva​ ​(Cornavin)​ ​train​ ​station​ ​and​ ​students​ ​will​ ​also​ ​be​ ​picked​ ​up​ ​from​ ​there.​ ​Each group​ ​will​ ​be​ ​given​ ​a​ ​specific​ ​time​ ​and​ ​place​ ​to​ ​meet​ ​in​ ​a​ ​later​ ​letter.​ ​If​ ​you​ ​would​ ​like​ ​your​ ​child​ ​to​ ​take part​ ​in​ ​this​ ​trip​ ​please​ ​complete​ ​the​ ​google​ ​form​ ​Permission​ ​Form (​https://goo.gl/forms/eQTLgM9uY9fz5rLo2​)​ ​-​ ​ ​by​ F ​ riday​ ​24th​ ​November​ ​2017​​ ​The​ ​form​ ​can​ ​also​ ​be found​ ​on​ ​the​ ​department​ ​website​ ​www.nationsinsoc.org​​ ​>​ ​Experiences​ ​>​ ​Medieval​ ​Journey​ ​-​ ​where you​ ​will​ ​also​ ​be​ ​able​ ​to​ ​see​ ​photographs​ ​and​ ​work​ ​from​ ​previous​ ​trips.
