TyneMet Construction Tues TMC Benton AQA units
Based at the newly acquired TMC TyneMet Construction, students will have tasters in bricklaying, plastering, joinery and electricals. Students will follow health and safety and wear PPE.
Catering is run by Mrs Swales and is based in the cookery room at Southlands. Students will prepare and cook complex recipes and apply basic food hygiene procedures. Students run this a restaurant over Tuesday Lunchtime. Table service will be offered and a 3 course meal will be available to staff, friends and guests of Southlands.

Newcastle Enterprise Academy are running an OCR accredited course on business and enterprise. Students will investigate NUFC as a club looking at its leaders and manager and how they make money. They will use this to learn more about enterprise. This will include a ground visit with a related activity.
Students will visit TyneMet college’s beauty department to take part in a variety of beauty and hair activities. Such as manicures, nail art, hair treatment and hand massage.

In Southlands Beauty School, students learn a variety of beauty techniques such as manicures, pedicures, facials, massage and others to name a few. This course is run by TyneMet and will give students the opportunity to work towards a BTEC in Leisure and Sports Management. The course will mainly be located on the Hawkeys Lane site but will include visits to the fitness studio and Gym at the Coast Road Campus. This will be a 1 year course.
This group runs the school tuck shop. You will make and serve hot and cold items like toasties, scones, carrot cake, flapjacks and fruit cups . In addition you will to buy stock and work out your cost and profit. The healthy school tuck shop runs during break time from 10.15 till 10.30, all visitors welcome.

Allotment/ Gardening

Mr Forrester works with a group at the school allotment in Monkseaton. The group maintains the work area, plants new crops and also harvest in the produce to sell as an enterprise activity. This years produce was lettuce, radish, potatoes and onions. This group will do a mixture of practical and theory work-vital to anyone wanting to work in food handling and a grasp of the basic methods of cooking on a large scale in a production kitchen. Students often make something to take home such as soup, scones, pies, breads and cakes.
In this course you will be building up the skills to organise a party. You will learn how to produce party invitations, make your own themed party bags, visit some party venues, meet some children’s entertainers, design your own party food menu, visit a sweet factory and design and make a sweetie table. www.eventsulove.co.uk As part of the group you will learn about joinery, plastering, painting, decorating and tiling as well as other basic construction skills

Mr McGoldrick runs an art group working towards the Arts award on a Thursday morning from Moorbridge.
At the Meadows in North Shields you will be able to work in the polytunnels, allotment raised beds or even with the bee hives. Working on the land to plant/produce and harvest a variety of crops.

Health and fitness is based at the refurbished YMCA in North Shields including the new YACTIVE fitness centre. Students will study towards CYQ level 1 award in Body Image and Wellbeing

Students will look at producing a variety of artwork using recycled material. Some may even be sold on as part of an enterprise project

You must follow the course for the whole year. This is an extensive course that will lead to work experience and then placement in Co-op Tynemouth and North Shields and another local cafe. As part of a group you will learn the names of various flowers. You will learn different forms of arrangements i.e. bouquets and wedding poses. An interest in art would be an advantage, as you will learn about colour co-ordination and designs. Students can work an art group working towards the Arts award on a Tuesday morning from Moorbridge. Students will look at a variety of different art techniques and material such as paint, modelling, paper. pastelles and pencil.

This group will work at the workshop in North Shields. They will learn to use a range of tools such as spanners and sockets and apply them to all parts of bikes. The group will work together to service and repair bikes. Students concentrate on maintenance and repair, stripping down old bikes repairing and building up new bikes with the option of buying a bike at the end of the course.
The Barn Joinery offer a course in basic joinery skills. For the first few weeks they evaluate your skills and let you design and build your own projects. After that you will start to get used to the workshop where you will be trained in the use of hand tools and certain wood working
This group is for students who need to develop experience of independent travel skills such as using the buses and metro’s around North Tyneside. The group work is very practical , and involves a lot of travel familiarisation. Students will work towards travelling independently to the college placement i.e. home to TyneMet college. This course also includes an independent travel module to familiarise students with travelling on bus, metro and ferry independently.

Paul Cook, who has a small powerpoat which is up to RYA training standard, runs a Powerboat course which Paul Cook involves boat handling and experience of working in a maMr rina and yacht club. Students will take photographs from different locations and landmarks around the area and compile a portfolio of work that has been edited and presented to a high standard using Adobe Photoshop. Locations such as Deleval Hall, St Mary’s lighthouse and North Shields Fish Quay are used as case studies.
