Introduction: We hope this letter finds you well! The information contained within is to help answer some of the questions regarding the upcoming Mentor Middle School swim season. This year we look to continue our success from recent seasons. This includes a commitment to academics with team GPAs both above 3.4, a 4-4-1 record for the girls, and a 7-2 record for the boys from 2016-2017. ESSENTIALS CHECK-LIST _____ Forms: Please see attached document with instructions. Per district athletic policy, all forms must be current and on file to participate in practice. Mentor athletics department has transitioned to the Final Forms online form submission. _____ Pay to Play: Per district athletic policy, fees must be turned in prior to the first competition in order to compete. Athletic fees can be paid online like school/lunch fees. These will be posted to your Infinite Campus account when the roster is finalized. Please try to pay these online when they become available. If you cannot pay online, please give payment to coach only. Please do not give payment to the middle school offices as it is the high school athletic department that will process these fees. The cost is $150.00 for the first sport per athlete at the middle schools. The cost per athlete for additional sports is $50.00 per sport. Thank you! _____ Equipment: Please see the attached document for suit order instructions. All swimmers must either order the team suit or have a solid black suit for meets. Swimmers may wear any one-piece suit to practice and will also want to wear a pair of goggles. Most swimmers will want a swim cap. We sell swim caps for 4$ or swimmers may wear a solid all black cap. For competition, all swimmers must wear a team suit/or solid black suit and a team cap/solid black cap. Swimmers may use a previous year’s team suit for competition if styles have not changed.

Academics: Success in the classroom is a top priority of the program. We have been the team high GPA award winner at the high school with multiple Academic All Americans recognized by NISCA. Of 9 seniors last year, 8 graduated with above a 3.0 cumulative GPA. We prioritize academics and want to be certain we maintain a high academic standard with the swim teams. Academic Risk: Handled per middle school policy. If grade concerns arise for individual student athletes, we will address those situations and alter their practice and meet schedule as necessary. Participation: Participation is allowed for current 7th and 8th grade students. This is set for all middle school sports by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Competition: Memorial, Shore, and Ridge will compete as one Mentor Middle School team in our meets. Our meet dates for this season are attached on the meet schedule page. Please let coaches know of your meet availability so that we can make the lineup that provides the most swimmers the opportunity to compete. Season: The season will start Fri Nov 3rd and conclude with the final meet (currently Jan 9th). Schedule: Practice and meet schedules will be posted to the swim team website and passed out in hard copy form at the parent meeting. Please note that the schedules are subject to change. You can find updates on the swim team website as well as through the weekly swim team email newsletter. Please note that due to inclement weather, meets and practices may be canceled. We will make every effort to reschedule missed meets. Transportation: Transportation will be provided by the school district to and from Spire. Pickup will be right after school with a bus going from Shore to Memorial to Ridge, then on to 90 East to Spire. Our Return drop off will be with the high school swim bus at the high school north parking lot by the gym. Our expected return time is 7:30pm each day, please plan to have your ride there at that time. Attendance: With focus on academics, our middle school program will offer flexible attendance as a result of the time commitment and travel involved. Swimmers should plan to attend at least three practices a week. Swimmers are welcome to attend more if they would like. Swimmers need to attend three practices in the seven available practices leading up to a meet to be eligible to be entered into that next meet. Swimmers are encouraged to attend the night before the meet as we practice starts, turns, and relay exchanges during this practice.

Rule Clarification: Once a swimmer competes for Mentor in a MS or HS meet, they cannot compete for a club team in a meet again until after their last meet for Mentor. If they were to return to swim a meet for a club team, they would be ineligible to swim for Mentor again until the next season. This is a rule set by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Multiple Sports/Activities: You are welcome to compete with or participate in other activities during the season. Please speak with your coach to determine a schedule that allows you to best participate in both activities. We do often work with swimmers that swim a few nights of practice with us and a few nights with a YMCA or USA swim teams as well. The other most common activity we work with is girls basketball. Swimmers compete with swimming through the holiday break and then trainsition to basketball for the final week of the season in January. New Facility: New this year will be the openning of the Lake Health Wellness Center at Mentor High School. We will be transitioning to this facility for practice Jan 1st for their offical openning, or sooner should the facility open ahead of schedule. We are excited for the great opportunities this partnership between Mentor Schools and Lake Health will have for our student athletes and community. A revised transportation plan will be implemented to bring the middle school swimmers from each middle school to the new facility for practices when it opens. Middle School students will have a dryland component of practice from 4:30 to 5:00pm and then an hour of swim practice from 5:00 to 6:00pm. Parents may then pick up swimmers at the conclusion of practice from the new facility.
