What are you doing this summer? Join us for the MTC Academy! All rising sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in Rockingham County and Harrisonburg City are invited to attend an exciting summer enrichment opportunity at Massanutten Technical Center. Each day, students will participate in hands-on activities that explore various aspects of their chosen program. Materials are provided in the cost of the program. The Academy will be held Monday, June 26th through Friday, June 30th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. The total cost for the week is $110.00 (to cover costs of instruction, supplies, and transportation). Make checks payable to MTC. Bus transportation for students will be provided from each middle school or students may be dropped off at the Center before 8:30 a.m. on the session days. There are only twelve spots available for each session, so get your registration in early! You can mail your registration and payment to Chris Dalton, Assistant Director, at 325 Pleasant Valley Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 or drop them by MTC between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Availability is subject to change based on interest and instructor schedule. Again, each program may have a maximum of twelve students. Please write 1st, 2nd, and 3rd beside your three top choices. _____ Computer Programming – Coding Kids Unlimited: Experience a summer camp adventure where computer characters are at your command through the M.I.T. Scratch visual programming language. This introductory course will introduce you to the basic principles behind object-oriented programming. You will learn how to program your own stories, animations, and a simple game, as well as how to share your creations on the web. _____Collision Repair – Become a “CARtist”: Have you ever wanted to bang out dents in a car or create art on a metal canvas? In Collision Repair, you can make treasures that last a lifetime! Learn how to sand down panels for painting, use car paint and wood grain techniques to create unique projects, and much more. This hands-on experience will have you excited to repaint your parent’s car in no time! (Kidding!) _____ Computer Repair and Networking - All Keyed Up: Students will learn and explore by taking apart PC’s, laptops, hard drives and building small networks. They will gain and use knowledge of networking concepts as they build and design small networks for houses. They will tour the MTC campus to see how a large scale network works, and then spend time each day on network-based games, PC builds, or in network based (LAN) competitions with other classes. Students will also receive their own PC tool kit to use during the class! _____ Cosmetology - Look Good, Feel Great: Would you like to learn how to style your own hair or your friend's hair the "professional" way? Learn how to give a professional shampoo and style to your "client"! You will also learn basic manicuring, pedicuring and facials! Get a jump start on your Cosmetology career by attending the MTC Academy! _____ Criminal Justice/Forensics - Who Did It?: You will receive practical instruction in Forensics and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) and we will cover the basic topics of crime scene processing. This hands-on program will include latent fingerprint processing, as well as DNA search and collection, crime scene practical exercise, and much more. _____ Cybersecurity – Digital Samurai – Guarding the Gates of the Digital World: Students will learn computer and networking basics and how to secure their data from attackers. Topics covered will include securing a personal computer, protecting your wireless networks, basic encryption techniques and methods used by attackers to gain access to computer systems and networks. _____ Dental Assistant - Be a Dental Dynamo!: You don’t have to brush all of your teeth! (Just those that you want to keep!) Come learn some fantastic dental skills, such as polishing manikin teeth, taking impressions and making models from them, making and putting in fillings, and much more! You will have a great time with this hands-on class, and will bring home some great models to teach your entire family! _____ Fire/Rescue - Be a Hero: This is not an ordinary class....here you will not be a spectator...you will be in the action! You will learn how to put out a live fire with a fire extinguisher, practice search and rescue techniques, and learn how to tie several emergency knots. Students will also learn to talk on a walkie "Firefighter Style" and participate in hands-on practice for First Aid techniques. There’s even a “Get Wet" Day, where you will practice using proper techniques to put out simulated fires. _____ Nursing: Welcome to Nursing 101 where students will learn the different types of nursing from Nursing Assistant, LPN, RN, to Nurse Educator. Activities will include: Glow germs and handwashing; how to take vital signs and help people in emergency situations; ways to care for your body and keeping it healthy; a close look at what happens in the operating room; and how nurses care for newborn babies, plus many other fun interactive activities. Come have fun with Nursing 101. _____ Restaurant Careers - A Taste of History: Explore America's beginnings as you prepare foods/recipes from times past. You will have the opportunity to create and experience cuisine from the colonies, Native Americans, and early immigrants. As we step back in time, you will get to know the founders of our country through the food they ate and the recipes they prepared. _____ Veterinary Assistant - Animal Love: Are you a pet lover? Do you enjoy working with small and large animals? We will be covering breeds, anatomy, diseases, and preventions for our common cats and dogs. Instruction also includes work involving horses, cows, and sheep. This class can be used to obtain knowledge to care for a healthy pet or it could be used as a stepping stone to a career in Animal Science and beyond. _____ Welding - Sparks Will Fly: Interested in welding and metalworking? Layout work, blueprint reading, simple welding mathematics, and MIG and stick welding practice are provided in this unique lab experience.
