1.0 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The Netsys HCNA Coax Ethernet Converter (NH-310C)provides a cost effective, plug and play, standards-based HCNA 3.1 Converter for point-to-point or multipoint networks up to eleven (11) locations over new or existing 75 ohm coaxial cable (RG-6, RG-11, RG-59) at distances up to 4,000 feet and speeds up to 200Mbps. The NH-310C is capable of combining TV and network services over the same coaxial cable system and is ideal for a variety of network devices including IP cameras, wireless access points, PCs, gaming units, IP phones, etc. in the home, small office/home office, hotel/motel and/or MTU/MDU environments. The NH-310C is HPNA 3.0/3.1 compliant and comes ready to plug and play out of the box for distances up to 4,000 feet (1,220m) and is capable of speeds up to 200Mbps. The HCNA Ethernet Converter operates over existing coaxial cable and features dual 10/100 Auto-MDI/MDIX Ethernet ports. The NH-310C's HCNA Port is connected to the coaxial cabling extending throughout the home or from the central office location. It can then connect to one or more NH-310C converters throughout the location. The TV Port can be utilized to carry the TV or STB signal over the same cable, and the two (2) RJ-45 Ethernet ports connect to a NIC, hub, switch, or other network devices including IP phones. The NH-310C HCNA Ethernet Converter provides a simple and cost-effective solution for creating standards-based coaxial cable networks and distributing High-Speed Internet Access in the home, small offices, home offices, hotels/motels and multi-tenant buildings.

Please inform the place of purchase immediately if there are any missing or damaged parts. If possible, retain the original packing materials and use them to repack the unit in case the need arises to return the product for repair.

4.2 Pre-Installation Requirements Before you start the actual hardware installation, please make a best efforts attempt to provide an adequate operating environment by verifying the following installation requirements: 

Power Input Requirements: 100-240VAC, 50/60Hz

Location: - The NH-310C Unit is typically located at the central location (CO, Computer Room, Telephone Closet, etc.) - The unit should be located in a cool dry place, with at least 10cm/4in of space at the front and back for ventilation. - The unit should be placed out of direct sunlight, and away from heat sources or areas with a high amount of electromagnetic interference.

The NH-310C unit can be installed on any level surface (i.e. desktop or shelf).

Ensure all network cables and connections are available for installation

4.3 Ethernet Port Connections After placing the NH-310C HCNA Coax Ethernet Converter at the appropriate location, use the Straight-Through Ethernet Patch Cable provided in the product kit to connect Page 6 of 16 Revision: 1.0.2 Revision Date: 1/11/2012  Copyright 2012 Netsys-America, LLC

the Ethernet Port of the unit to the appropriate Ethernet port of the attached network devices. Please refer to Ethernet Port pin outs in Appendix A if necessary. The Ethernet Ports on the NH-310C units are Auto MDIX and therefore can connect to all types of network equipment without the need for a Crossover Ethernet Patch Cable. The network devices attached to the NM-1000 units must support auto-negotiation at 10Base-T, 100Base-TX, or 1000Base-TX/FX operation. Note: All Network Connections (Ethernet Port) must be made using Category 5 UTP cable or better for 100Mbps operation and Category 3/4 UTP cable or better for 10Mbps operation. All network connections can be no more than 328 feet (100m) from end to end.

4.4 HCNA Port Connections All Home network connections must use RG-59 75Ω coaxial cable and must not exceed -160dBm/Hz noise floor.

4.5 Sample Configuration The modem has been designed to operate on the coaxial cable installed in homes throughout the world. They utilized the same cable and connectors commonly used for television. The modem had 2 Ethernet ports. One port is used to connect to the ISP to provide Internet access and the other port is used to connect devices such as a Hub, concentrator, bridge, or router. The device attached to these ports must support auto-negotiation. The 2 Coaxial connectors are used to connect to a TV or to another modem that is connected by its Ethernet Port to the LAN card of a PC, notebook, or another internet access device or its coaxial connector to a TV or cable set-top box. The modems can connect through a coaxial wall socket. The modem’s coaxial connector can support the transmission of data up to 200Mbps across the existing coaxial cable and can reach up to 4,000 feet (1220m) or -160dBm/Hz. Make sure that the connector is inserted properly and locked. Ethernet cable used must conform to FCC standard to ensure data integrity and it should not exceed 100 meters (328 feet).

APPENDIX B – TROUBLESHOOTING B.1 Basic Troubleshooting Using the LED Indicators The Modem can be easily monitored through its comprehensive panel indicators. These indicators assist the network manager in identifying problems the hub may encounter. This section describes common problems you may encounter and possible solutions. 1. Symptom:

POWER indicator does not light up (green) after power on.

Cause:

Defective External power supply

Solution:

Check the power plug by plugging in another that is functioning properly. Check the power cord with another device. If these measures fail to resolve the problem, have the unit power supply replaced by a qualified distributor.

2. Symptom: Cause: Solution:

Link indicator does not light up (green) after making a connection. Network interface (ex. a network adapter card on the attached device), network cable, or switch port is defective.

2.1

Verify that the switch and attached device are powered on. 2.2 Make sure the cable is plugged into both modems and corresponding device. 2.3 Verify that the proper cable type is used and its length does not exceed specified limits. 2.4 Check the modem on the attached device and cable connections for possible defects. 2.5 Replace the defective modem or cable if necessary.

3. Symptom: Line speed LEDs do not light up green only, LEDs light up both green and yellow after making a connection. Cause: It is a normal response of the device when it is running at 32 to 64Mbps or SNR value at 23 to 27dB. Solution:

To increase the dataspeed to more than 64Mbps, so that line speed LED will light up green then you have to increase the SNR value to 28 or above. Either by decreasing the coaxial cable distance or by decreasing the number of splitters connected to the coaxial cable.

System Diagnostics Power and Cooling Problems If the POWER indicator does not turn on when the power cord is plugged in, you may have a problem with the power outlet, power cord, or internal power supply as explained in the previous section. However, if the unit power is off after running for a while, check for loose power connections, power losses or surges at the power outlet, and verify that the fan on back of the unit is unobstructed and running prior to shutdown. If you still cannot isolate the problem, then the internal power supply may be defective. In this case, please contact your local dealer. Installation Verify that all system components have been properly installed. If one or more components appear to be malfunctioning (e.g., the power cord or network cabling), test them in an alternate environment where you are sure that all the other components are functioning properly. Transmission Mode The default method of selecting the transmission mode for RJ-45 ports is 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, for coaxial connectors are 200Mbps HCNA. It supports auto-negotiation and is half-duplex. Therefore, if the link signal is disrupted (e.g. by unplugging the network cable and plugging it back in again, or by resetting the power), the port will try to reestablish communications with the attached device via auto-negotiation. If the device does not support auto-negotiation, communications can be easily lost (i.e., reset to the wrong mode) whenever the attached device is reset or experiences a power fluctuation. The best way to resolve this problem is to upgrade these devices to a version that support Ethernet and 200Mbps HCNA. Physical Configuration If problems occur after altering the network configuration, restore the original connections, and try to track the problem down by implementing the new changes, one step at a time. Ensure that cable distances and other physical aspects of the installation that do not exceed recommendations. System Integrity As a last resort verify the switch integrity with a power-on reset. Turn the power to the switch off and then on several times. If the problem still persists and you have completed all the preceding diagnoses, then contact your dealer.
