New sletter Friday 19th M ay 2017 We car e an d w e sh ar e.. At Lorenden, it is the kindness that pupils show towards each other, and to those outside the school environment, that continues to be a strength of the school. This week, Scarlett (Year 2) handed over her tooth fairy money for us to donate to Cancer Research on her behalf - a fantastic and genuine gesture from one so young and the cheque has been sent off. The behaviour of all pupils was also commented on most favourably in a letter from a Methodist Independent Schools

Trust (MIST) trustee who visited us a couple of weeks ago: ?I was so impressed by the children who were delightful; they were self-confident and well mannered and made me feel really welcome.?

Ken t Fest ival of Speech & Dr am a The Kent Speech and Drama Festival was held at Lorenden last Saturday, and we were delighted with the results of our entrants: In the duologue class Molly-Anne and Charlotte (Year 6) gained 1st place with a scene from 'A Little Princess' by Frances Hodgson Burnett. whilst Phoebe and Evie (Year 6) came 2nd with a scene from 'Double Act' by Jacqueline Wilson. In the individual classes: Matilda (Year 5) came 1st with distinction for her prose reading from 'The Maze Runner ' and Emilia (Year 5) gained 3rd place. Emilia then gained 1st place and Arienne ( Year 5) was awarded 2nd place, both in the verse class. Both Emilia and Matilda were invited to perform for the best Junior award at the end of the day. In the Year 6 verse class Mia was 2nd with Charlotte and Phoebe taking joint 3rd places and Camille (Year 4) gained 1st place with Distinction in her verse class. Mia (Year 6) also came 1st in sight reading and 3rd with Distinction in the Age 13 and under monologue class with a scene from 'The Secret Garden'. A huge well done to them all for their efforts and achievements!

Ou r M u d Kit ch en n eeds you !! The outdoor mud kitchen is a popular play activity at breaktimes and we would like some more utensils, saucepans and bowls - so if you have any old kitchen equipment (non-electrical) that you would like to donate, we would be very pleased to receive it!) A big thank you we raised £50 from the plant sale! We still need some more empty compost bags if you have any.

Assem blies t h is w eek This week in assemblies we have heard some beautiful piano playing in assembly from Millie (Year 5) this week who performed her piece perfectly and from memory as well as looking at Voting Rights for women (fairness) and congratulating the winners of the Year 6 initiated Sports competition. Looking ahead, Year 5 are now organising a ?Lorenden?s Got Talent? event to take place in the second week

after half term and keen groups and soloists from all year groups are already practising!

Gr an dpar en t s' Af t er n oon Thank you to all grandparents who took the time to come and spend time at Lorenden this afternoon, watching our special Grandparents? concert and having afternoon tea. We certainly enjoyed your company and we hope that you will come and visit us again soon.

Boden Par t y ? It ?s n ot t oo lat e! Thank you for your support on Tuesday evening at the Boden party. If you couldn?t make the night, it?s not too late to place an order utilising our fantastic 25% discount code, earning commission also for the school, which will remain active until the 9th June. Please speak to your Class Rep if you are interested.

Look in g ah ead We are fast approaching the last school term of the academic year, and with it some exciting dates for your diaries. Over the half term break, we will be asking you to consider volunteering to be part of Friends of Lorenden next academic year in the capacity of Class Representative. Mrs Sheaves sent an extremely informative piece via email last week, but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak with any of us. On Friday 9th June (Year 1 date to be confirmed due to school trip), we will be holding a non-school uniform day for the children in exchange for a luxury item (for example, a luxury food or drink item or luxury toiletries) which can be used either in our hampers, or on our tombola stall at the Summer Fair. On Friday 23rd June we will be holding our annual AGM, with formal notice being provided in due course. Please do come and support your Friends of Lorenden team. The Summer Fair itself will be held on Saturday 24th June, and your respective Class Rep will be in touch with you closer to the day to tell you about the exciting stalls we will have and how you will be able to help us make the event a great success.

Our exhibition has been a great success with a number of local residents and ex-Lorenden community members visiting so far and a huge thank you must go to all parents, past Lorenden members and local residents for their contributions A big thank you also to those children who contributed - Year 2 and Year 6 as classes took on Nature Studies and research, whilst Prep pupils all took part in the Mark Mason art project and especially to Lola (Year 5) for taking the time to interview a local resident who was evacuated to Lorenden in the war and producing a succinct and well-written account.

M essage f r om M r Rober t Boyd-How ell, Ch air of Lor en den Com m it t ee On behalf of the Lorenden Committee I wish to both congratulate and thank Mrs Uttley for the most interesting and informative exhibition that she has put together on the History of Lorenden School. The amount of time and effort that she has spent on this is to be commended. I also want to thank Mr Uttley who helped with the photography. My wife, Sheila, and I spent a very enjoyable hour at the exhibition and I understand that many of the original Staff have also visited. We were very impressed at the level of pupil participation in the exhibits and particularly Lola deserves special mention for her interview with a 90 year-old evacuee who spent some of the war years at Lorenden House. What a tribute to all at Lorenden School. Thank you all. I do hope that all of you have also been able to visit and enjoy this event. There will be a further opportunity tomorrow morning 10:00am - 12:00pm after which the Faversham Society are hoping to display this, at a yet to be decided venue in Faversham. I shall be in contact with one of the Town Councillors to ensure that this happens.

Year 4 t r ip t o Har r y Pot t er Wor ld report by Eva On Monday 15th May, Year 4 went to Harry Potter World. We were all very excited to get there so we raced to the minibus, left at 08:30 and got there at about 11:00. We got off the bus and went to the loo before going in,finally we were inside and all very energetic and went around in circles in the queue but soon we got into our seats to watch the little film that was telling us about Harry Potter World. We got some passports and we had to find all the stamps for the pages, we went to Gryffindor first and found all the Golden Snitches and got the stamps. We went to the potion room but we were all really hungry so we had our lunch which was very tasty. After lunch we carried on with the tour, we particularly enjoyed Diagon Alley. Unfortunately, it had to come to an end.All of us didn?t want it to come to an end but we were all buzzing to tell our parents about what a brilliant day we had.We got on the mini bus ,all tired and exhausted but with Every Flavour Beans from Bertie we perked up! Finally,we got back to school . Thank you to Mrs Taylor and Mrs Brown for taking us.

Ear ly Year s t r ip t o Belm on t Hou se & Gar den s Kindergarten and Reception had a wonderful day at Belmont on Wednesday! It was the final seasonal walk around the grounds for the year and the sun certainly shone for our summer visit! All the children made the most of every opportunity to run, climb and roll down hills before we went to the large pond to do some pond dipping. The pond was beautifully clear and we could see so many tadpoles wriggling around - little did they know that they would soon begin a journey to their new home at Lorenden! The children spent a full half hour catching tadpoles and newts that were gently placed in a tank; the big fish wisely stayed in the centre of the pond well out of reach of our nets! Despite the early morning rain, the ground was dry enough for us to enjoy an outdoor picnic before we had a final run around and tree-climb before heading back to school. It really was a grand day out.

Holly (Year 1) taken next to Major Tim Peake at his exhibition in Chichester. Her European Space Agency training starts next week ....
