Principal’s Report

Kia ora, Talofa Lava, Kia Orana, Malo e Lelei, Fakaalofa Lahi atu, Bula Vinaka, Namaste, Ni Hao, Nei Ho, Selamat, Konnichiwa, Kamusta, Salam, Malo ni & greetings.

217 South Rd Caversham Dunedin 9012 Ph: 455 8315 Fax: 455 3720

There is some great learning happening in our Carisbrook classes this week. I continue to enjoy the positive approach that the majority of our students are already exhibiting this year, with their pride in their work, quality of work they are producing and their willingness to accept challenges. I spent some time in Ruma Rata yesterday and enjoyed students sharing their writing with me. I was particularly impressed with the quality of writing that, year seven student, Brayden Taane was producing. It was like reading a passage from a novel, lots of descriptive writing and interesting adjectives used. The other student I am making special mention of is Harlyn Scully who has impressed me with his enthusiasm to write and his great progress. This morning we had a very near miss of a student on our road crossing. We need to emphasize again to parents and caregivers that you must take extreme care when driving around the school area. Most of our students have good road sense but we must remember that we have a lot of younger new entrant students here who have still to develop a safe road sense. We are desperate for some community support with manning our Road Patrol. Even if you are able to commit to one session either before or after school for this term it would be a great help. It would allow our teachers, who are having to be rostered on to Road Patrol to be in their classes with their students and catching up with parents when needed. If you can free yourself up, please complete and send back the form on the back page. We provide training for Road Patrollers.

Resilient Responsible Respectful

Carisbrook students have benefitted greatly from our ‘Friends of Carisbrook School’ over recent years with their fundraising activities providing resources and opportunities for our students. Many of our old Friends of School have moved on. We are keen to launch the ‘Friends of Carisbrook School’ for 2017 and I invite any interested parents and caregivers to come along to school and join me in our staffroom for a coffee and chat next Wednesday, 22nd February from 2.30pm – 3.00pm. There will be no pressure placed on anyone to take up positions on the committee etc. We are very proud to have one of our staff selected to represent New Zealand in a sport. Office Manager Mel Huddy recently trialled for the New Zealand Roller Derby Team and has been selected in the team. Mel is a very dedicated sportsperson and has to attend regular training weekends throughout the year around New Zealand. Mel hopes to cement herself in the team for the World Championships being held in 2018 in Manchester. Carisbrook School has breakfast foods available for students that arrive at school without having eaten breakfast. We need to ensure that students have eaten before they have started their classes for the day. It is extremely difficult for a student to settle, remain on task and work to their ability if they are hungry. Breakfast Club operates daily from 8.30am – 9.00am. Once again, if you are able to assist for one morning per week until the end of term this would be greatly appreciated. Finally, we are also require a volunteer van drivers to work either mornings, 8.30am – 9.00am or afternoons from 3.00pm– 3.30pm.

Compulsory School Uniform      

The Carisbrook School uniform is compulsory. Top half of the uniform must be the EmbroidMe t-shirt, polarfleece or softshell jacket with the Carisbrook School logo. Bottom half can be either the EmbroidMe school uniform or navy blue trackpant, shorts or skort from another provider. If your child wants to wear a long sleeve top under their t-shirt for extra warmth this must be plain navy blue. Parents of children who are not in correct uniform may be contacted and ask to bring in their correct uniform. A school uniform helps child feel they belong. A uniform means students don’t have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes.

Van Transport Charges

Charges for term 1 transport are $75 per student This amount has been added to accounts for those students who use this service. We recommend that an automatic payment of $7.50 per week be set up to ensure that this amount is paid in full by the end of term 1. As this service is a considerable expense to the school, students of unpaid Term 1 accounts will not be able to get transport in Term 2.

Year 7 Vision Screening - 27 February

The Vision Hearing Technicians from Public Health South will be visiting your school to screen all year seven students for distance vision. Distance Vision (Amblyopia & Hyperopia) - This determines how well your child is able to see at a distance. It involves reading an eye chart. (Not required if child wears glasses) If you do not wish your child to be screened please fill out an opt-out slip, which are available at the school office before our visit.

Head Lice

Head lice is doing the rounds already. Please check your child’s hair daily and treat when necessary. We need all families to be vigilant with the prevention and treatment of head lice. Treatment is not just a one off shampoo, it takes continuous checking, combing and follow up shampooing. There are many helpful websites that have great ideas to help prevent and treat head lice. To reduce the chance of you or your child contracting a case of head lice, start by not sharing items that touch the head. Though it may be tempting to share personal belongings (especially for kids), doing so can lead to the spread of head lice. Avoid sharing: combs and brushes scarves and coats

hair clips and accessories towels

hats and bike helmets headsets and earbuds

As a preventative have you tried putting tea tree oil in your shampoo or spraying it in the hair each day? Some studies suggest that head lice do not like tea tree oil and will avoid it.

Surrey Street Parking

The school side of Surrey Street is clearly marked with yellow lines. Please do not park or stop on these lines while dropping off your child. It is so important for the safety of our children that parents are careful and responsible when parking and driving near the school. Please note that vehicles are not allow to drive onto school grounds, at any time. The Surrey Street entrance is for authorised personal only
