Good bye

New sletter Friday 31st M arch 2017 So with Spring in the air and Summer hopefully not too far away, we say goodbye for the Easter holidays after a great term where children of all ages seem to be engaging wholeheartedly in having a go in lessons and making really good progress across the board - a huge well done to them all !

We have said ?adieu?to Mrs Stead this week as she leaves us and embarks on her maternity leave. She will be sadly missed during her absence but she has promised to keep in touch and bring in the new arrival very soon! We are waiting to hear if the name that Mr and Mrs Stead give to their new arrival is one of the many suggestions made by pupils? ? We have also said goodbye to Miss McClaren who leaves us to embark on an exciting new venture and we wish her all the very best of luck as she leaves Lorenden. Likewise, although we have only known Mrs Stiles, our after care supervisor for a short time, we are saying goodbye for now as she steps down for her own personal reasons. We have appreciated her care and attention of pupils after school and hope that she will be able to join us again in the future. In the meantime are looking for someone to take on her role. Goodbye also to George (Year 4) who takes up a place as a chorister in Canterbury. George has been a valued member of the choir and performed a beautiful solo at Christmas. We wish him all the best for his new life.

Th e w eek i n pi ct u r es

For the second time running this term, Mr Jasper all dressed up hits the headlines of the newsletter - huge thanks to him for all his enthusiasm and making the Easter Egg Hunt such a lovely occasion for all involved and a big thank you to the Friends of Lorenden for organising such a wonderful event for the children. The term wouldn't be itself without the ubiquitous inter-house cross country to round up the sport for this term. The course was a challenging 1.5km for all years that wound its way around the Lorenden Trustland with some tricky roots to negotiate and a very steep ascent before charging through the woods amongst the daffodils and bluebells. Pupils of note and fastest boys and girl of each year group were: Tom V, Charlotte, Harry, Izzy, Raif, Lauren, Joey and Skye. All pupils were able to score so it needed an all-in effort to ensure a win. The overall winners were Swallows by a considerable gap but all pupils must be commended for their efforts. An extra thanks to the Friends for their help in marking the course.

Recept ion's f ar m visit On Wednesday Reception went to visit Beaulieu Burden's farm to see the cows and calves. They had an amazing experience and were exceptionally fortunate to witness a cow giving birth. Mrs Burden has asked the children to name the new born, they have chosen 'Beauty'. It was an event we will remember for a long time.

Ch ess Set s Chess club is expanding and we are needing more chess sets! If you have a set that is no longer used at home and you would be happy to donate it, please do bring it in and it will be put to good use!

Ar e w e allow ed t o boast ?? We have received a lovely email from a nursery who visited last Friday who wrote to tell us that their staff had ?spoken very highly of the school and all the staff and children, expressing how everybody you passed (even children) said "good morning" and how refreshing it was to see such polite and well behaved children and such happy and friendly staff.? - great to hear!

Aw ar d Win n er s In Friday?s end of term assembly, not only could we celebrate Year 6?s success on their recent Bikeability course, but we celebrated the following pupils for receiving half-termly awards - a huge well done to them all for their continuing efforts: Year 1 Art: Holly Head's: Clementine French: River PE: Maiya

Year 2 Art: Tom M Head's: Scarlett PE: Liam

Year 3: Art: Olivia Head's: Lottie

Year 4 Art: Lauren Head's: Eva French: Camille Games: Oscar

Year 5 Art: Sienna Head's: Ryan French: Archie Music: Grace

Year 6 Art: Toby Head's: Peony Games: Zak

Music: George

Spirit of Lorenden: Ryan

Pian o & Recor der Con cer t Thank you to all the children who performed so beautifully in the Piano and Recorder Concert on Wednesday. It was lovely to see that pupils from the age of 5 upwards had the confidence to announce their piece, take centre-stage to perform solos, and take a well-executed bow at the end. With over forty musical items we had a real treat and it was particularly pleasing to also see duets and trios that required a great deal of communication and concentration from the young performers. Well done everyone!

APRIL Wednesday 1st Beginning of Summer Term

Ar ch er y Clu b Mr Hill is delighted to announce that he has secured an archery coach for the last 7 weeks of the summer term. The sessions will start at 4pm on the 15th May and will last 1 hour each. The program will work by one 4 week program split by half term and one 3 week program running up to the end of the year (yes we're that close). Lessons will be delivered by Kevin Kitchener http://www.kwkarchery.com/ a very experienced and well-qualified archery instructor. There are 10 places available on each course and will be filled on a first come first served basis, to keep things fair children may only attend one program. Each program is payable up front and is £5 per class so either £20 or £15 each. Please email [email protected] if you are interested.

M at ch r epor t s On Wednesday 15th March Lorenden U11 Girls?A netball team played St Edmunds away. In the first quarter, we got the ball down to our end and quickly scored a goal but St Edmunds matched us and managed to get a goal. We scored two more goals but St Edmunds didn?t want to be left behind and scored two more, before both teams got another goal making it 4 all. In the second quarter, we came back on and began to realise this was going to be a tough game. St Edmunds scored a goal but we managed to up our game and got another goal ourselves. Just before half time we managed to score another goal making the score 5 ? 6 to us. In the third quarter St Edmunds matched our score, and then got another goal making the score 7-6. This had us worried and we rallied and managed to score another two goals making the score 7-8. In the last quarter, St Edmunds fought back hard and scored two goals. So, it was 9-8 but we desperately wanted to win and we scored another goal. With just one minute left, however, St Edmunds scored the last goal, leaving the final score at 10-9 to them. Girl of the match is Molly Anne, so well done Molly Anne and well done team for keeping the pressure up on St Edmunds right to the end. After very successful hockey and netball seasons, let?s try and do it again with a great rounders season! Evie, Team Captain

In the last U11 B team netball match of the season we played against St Edmunds. This was a closely fought match with the score being 1 ? 1 at half time. In the second half Lola went in to shoot and we forged ahead to win 4 ? 1. Well done to the defence for stopping any goals scoring during the second half and to Lola for good shooting. Mrs Cornell

M at h s Pr oblem s by Year 1 How lovely it is to see Year 1 creating their own maths problems something which is fundamental to developing excellent maths skills - and using the bar modelling method which will help them solve even the most complex problems by Year 5 and 6. Here are two examples of their work: There are 11 children. 7 of them were at piano how many are there left? (Holly)

There are 12 children. 7 of them were ill how many were there at school? (Evie)

? .a conversation between a Kindergarten and their teacher: (The children had potted daffodils ready to take home.) 1st Pupil: Do we need to water the flowers? Teacher: That is a great question. Can you remember what plants need in order to grow? 1st Pupil: Water and sunshine. 2nd Pupil: And food from the cake sale!

All the best for an enjoyable holiday and we look forward to seeing all your children again rested and ready to go in the Summer term,

Mrs Uttley
