How does your calculator find roots?
Graph y = x2 – 4 in your calculator Find the zero(s)
What does the calculator ask?
Why? (Think Calculus)

Write the linearization of f(x) @ x = a.
What is easier to find a root of than a curve?
How do we create that?
How would you find the root of what you created above?
When will this root be closer to the root of our desired curve?
Could we repeat this process with the new root as our center of approximation?
How would we know when to stop this process?

Write the equation of the tangent line for f(x) at xn
Find the root of this line.
Would there be a situation when you could not find the equation of the tangent line?
How could I fix this?

Steps for Newton’s Method 1. Make a guess where the root exists x1 2. Find the equation of the tangent line at x1. Let x1 be the center of our approximation. This is Linearization we are approximating a function with its tangent line. 3. Find the root of the tangent line (plug in 0 for y and solve). 4. Use that new root as our guess (the center of our approximation)and calculate the equation of the tangent line at the new root. 5. Repeat this process until approximation is within a particular tolerance of the actual root. |xn xn+1| 6. xn+1 is the approximation of the root
