Ivan Contreras Mrs. Lyons 9th Lit. 3rd Block March 12, 2015 “A Polar Controversy Essay” On the twentieth century, two Americans explorers decided to make something unbelievable become a reality. By going in a journey to the North Pole, many people thought it was something impossible due to it was and still a very dangerous place to travel. This includes remote areas and the cold temperatures; however, the two explorers considerate themselves “adventurers.” The two explorers were friends and they decided to be the first man to reach the North Pole. Two Americans explorers had the same goal but were very different in three ways; the way each treated the Eskimos, their experiences searching the North Pole and the way each explorer tried to prove he was there first. The two men had different attitudes, Cook he liked the Eskimos but Peary treated them rude and with a negative attitude. Cook also tried to help the Eskimos to overcome with new stuff; However Peary instead of help them he used to steal art from the Eskimos. Cook dedicated time to learn the Eskimos culture and Language. The story tell us that Cook left on February 1908 to the North Pole and returned in April 1909 “ one year later” , in the other hand Peary left on February 1908 and returned on August 1909. Something bad happened to Cook because when he came back from his journey people says he didn’t looked human that he looked skinnier and tired, due to that Peary took advantage and said he was the first one to be there and that Cook
never made it. Cook was bad so he forgot his records and again Peary took advantage of that and accused him of being a liar and like that, he made people think that Cook never went or was even near to the North Pole. Peary gained hate against Cook and he found out that Cook left his records in the Eskimos town; Cook asked Peary to shipped his records so he could prove he was the first man to be in the North Pole, but Peary did the appositive and told Cook that his records went lost forever. Since no body had the records another explorer went to the North Pole and brought back records, and claimed to be the first man to ever be in the North Pole , He was named as the man who first reached the North Pole, but the court who did the legal document never put that he was the man who discovered the North Pole.
