We are very grateful to Masashi Nishikawa of the Institute for Posts and Telecommunications Policy of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications for research assistance. Currently he is at the Faculty of Economics of Saitama University.

With Campbell and Watanabe (2001) it is indisputable that the Japan-is-different hypothesis has succumbed and that the aggregate saving is done by a small number of very wealthy or high-income households.

The new tables--the upper tails of the influential

households, net wealth, and income distributions--are useful and detailed.1

Finally, the inheritances are “extraordinary high,” and

lump sum pensions in 1994, in our view, are importance of total positive saving but the amounts of pensions are not known.2,3

2 Notes 1

See the sampling adjustment in Campbell and Watanabe (2001) or (1999). For instance, the sub-sample regional distribution of two or more person real asset owning households was adjusted to match the corresponding entire sample distribution: Hokkaido Tohoku Kanto 1 Kanto 2 Hokuriku Tokai Kinki 1 Kinki 2 Chugoku Shikoku Kita Kyushu Minami Kyushu

.0440 .0735 .2276 .0885 .0753 .1091 .1143 .0318 .0634 .0588 .0686 .0451

The twelve regions are comprised of the prefectures; note Table 12 (p. 44) of the 1994 Basic Survey on National Life. 2

For inheritances, p. 249, Campbell and Watanabe (2001).

3

Note the lump sum pensions of Question 24 in Campbell (1999).
