A website which urges a policy of allocating rented homes only to Welsh people has been reported to the police for inciting racial hatred. The Wales Eye news website discloses that the Jac O’the North blog has been reported to South Wales Police after launching a petition calling for social housing to be given to “the Welsh”. In another Twitter posting, re-tweeted by the blog, families from London who took houses from a Welsh housing association were called “perverts”. An aerial picture singles out a number of homes and the tweet says: “Just in one small Welsh town all these houses were allocated to perverts from London by a Welsh housing association.” The blog is run by commentator Royston Jones and it has a controversial history. Four months ago it was reported how an extraordinary internet attack on the blog led to death threats and a botched investigation by North Wales Police. An inquiry was launched into how the force had investigated the threats, and it issued a formal apology. One of the officers at the centre of the inquiry was ordered to receive management training. Jac O’the North had targeted Jacques Protic, who writes for another website, glasnost.org.uk Mr Jones wrote: “I was hoping to avoid this, but it has to be said – Protic is a Serb”. Mr Protic’s father worked for the Yugoslavian National Bank and he left the country when he was a teenager. Other statements were published, and soon afterwards, Mr Protic and his family received a number of harassing telephone calls. He was told he should be put down “like a mad dog”, and his car tyres were slashed. Mr Protic, who lives in North Wales, was unhappy with the standard of

investigation undertaken by the police which followed the published comments of Mr Jones, and he made an official complaint. Some of his points were not accepted, but one was formally conceded and the force apologised for their behaviour. Comments Mr Jones published on his blog about disabled athletes provoked particular controversy three years ago. One of the lines which caused offence, was: “Am I alone in thinking there’s an element of a Victorian freak show in the Paralympics?” Mr Jones said: “Not my petition. I’m just promoting it for Plaid Glyndwr.” It is understood that South Wales Police will not forward the complaint about Mr Jones to the Crown Prosecution Service.
