CREATION Health Tips for Fall Think of the new season as a time to make a fresh start on healthy habits. CHOICE: Fall is the time to rejuvenate mind, body and spirit. Try a new skill. Learn to meditate. Treat yourself with activities that promote wellness so you will feel good physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The Fall air makes us strive for new goals and new found interests. REST: Take a break from those activities that keep you inside...sign out of Facebook, ditch the fall lineup and head outside. Plus, spending time outside increases your vitamin D levels, makes you happier and improves concentration. ENVIRONMENT: Fall can be a treat for the senses: the crisp air, pumpkin carving, treats baking and the crunch of leaves underfoot. These months are a great time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler temperatures. ACTIVITY: There’s many things we can do to boost brain function, but a scenic walk outside is likely one of the most powerful, per a research study published in Psychological Science. Half of the study’s participants walked in an urban landscape and the other half strolled in a wooded area, the focus and memory was 20% stronger in those who walked in the forest. TRUST: “Be glad, rejoice in the Lord your God, for He has given you the autumn rains because He is faithful.” Joel 2:23 INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Fall is a great time to relax with friends. Soothe away stress by making contact in person or by phone with someone you care about, someone you haven't talked to in a while. The positive emotions will make you feel good. OUTLOOK: Research from the U.S. National Health Institute claims that getting 10 to15 minutes of sunlight per day is adequate for replenishing the body’s needed vitamin D (the “sunshine” vitamin) and helps combat the seasonal blues. NUTRITION: The weather cooling down usually doesn’t invoke our desire to hydrate. The tendency is to reach for caffeinated beverages (tea, coffee, hot chocolate) of which have diuretic affects. So, keep a water bottle handy to combat the impact of dehydrating beverages.

OCTOBER SPOTLIGHT Kevin Pacheco is this month’s Health Champion Spotlight!
Kevin works in the FH Winter Park Pharmacy Department. CREATION Health is very important to him because of his passion for healthy living wellness and health promotion. He tries to live by and support these principles at work and at home by attending the lunch and learns and the various programs that Florida Hospital sponsors. Two of his favorite programs include CHEE and Stress Recovery Effect. “I really enjoyed CHEE because it was a general overview of CREATION Health and gave me the foundation on these principles and made it easier for me to advocate to my department about wellness. I also recently completed Stress Recovery Effect and learned amazing ideas about neuroscience and how to reframe experiences so that I can develop my resilience and recover quickly from stressful situations.” He even seeks out books and audiobooks to deepen his knowledge of the latest science based studies on healthy living.
Kevin has been a Health Champion since June 2014. As a health champion, he has been able to support and encourage his colleagues to achieve their fitness goals. Last year to prepare for the AHA Heart Walk he created a program called, “Walk with Kev” where he would meet up with coworkers to go walking around local parks or to do group fitness. This was done to help build everyone’s confidence with walking or running the heart walk. Several colleagues that had been sedentary found new enthusiasm for fitness.
Kevin says, “CREATION Health principles are truly synergistic when applied together but my favorite letter is “O” for Outlook. I have always been a pretty happy go lucky person and my family instilled an open and growth mindset in me with an optimistic and positive attitude. My outlook on life has been the catalyst for my growth and development professionally, socially, an in regards to personal introspective development. Focusing on outlook is truly the one principle that allows me to grow and change for the better as I approach each CREATION Health principle with an optimistic and positive mind.”
