The Parish of St Wilfrid of York 53 London Road, Coalville, Leics, LE67 3JB TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY OF THE YEAR 3rd/4th September 2011 First Reading: Ezekiel 33 — Warn them in my name. Psalm Response: O that today you would listen to his voice! ‘Harden not your hearts.’ Second Reading: Romans 13 — Love is the answer... Gospel: Matthew 18 — Life in the Christian community. THOUGHT FOR TODAY This weekend, the revised English translation of the Roman Missal is being implemented in England & Wales. Although some of the words are new, and it will take us some time to get used to them, this gives us an opportunity to reflect upon our faith, and in particular on the great mystery which we celebrate at Mass. As members of Christ’s Body, the Church, we are a priestly people. ‘Where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them,’ as we have just heard in today’s Gospel, and it is our vocation to gather Sunday after Sunday in the presence of God, on behalf of the world, to celebrate Mass, the treasure at the heart of our life as Church. The Mass which we celebrate today is the same Mass which the Church has celebrated since the time of Christ himself, who gave us his Body and Blood at the Last Supper, commanding us to ‘Do this in memory of me.’ After the Resurrection, Christ’s first followers gathered together on Sundays
to listen to the Word of God, offer prayers and break the bread. Whether Mass is celebrated in English or in Latin, in the largest cathedral or the smallest chapel, it is the centre of the whole Christian life for the Church both universal and local, as well as for each individual Christian. During Mass, God sanctifies the world in Christ: we see Christ in one another, and welcome him into our very lives by listening attentively to the Scriptures and receiving his Body and Blood in Holy Communion. In the readings and the silence, the prayers and our singing, our faith is nourished, strengthened and expressed. Now it is time for us to begin using the new texts which the Church has given to us. I hope and pray that they will draw us ever more deeply into the mystery of God’s love for us, so that the Mass may truly be the source and summit of our Christian life. From Bishop Malcolm’s Pastoral Letter read at Mass today.

NAMING OF ROOMS The consultation we had a few weeks ago showed an overwhelming majority in favour of naming the new community room after Father Balfe. It will be known, therefore, as the ‘Father Balfe Room’. However, there was a much closer result for the dedication of the Oratory: Blessed Cyprian Tansi pulled just ahead of Blessed John Henry Newman. So the Oratory will be known as the ‘Oratory of Blessed Cyprian Tansi’. Because of the strong interest in Blessed John Henry, I have decided that the other room, which will be used for small meetings and interviews, will be known as the ‘Newman Room’. REST IN PEACE Please pray for the soul of John Ball, son of Mary Ball, who died recently. Funeral Mass at 11am this Wednesday. Please pray too for the soul of Thomas Almond, father-in-law of our organist, John Whiteside, who also died recently. We ask God to give them eternal rest, and we assure their families of our support and prayers.
SIMON AND MICHELLE GARRATT WRITE... ...please put a small piece in the newsletter, basically thanking everyone from us for their support and prayers whilst we were away, this was the main thing that kept us going throughout our journey - we certainly felt that the whole parish was behind us, and were united with us. The power of prayer certainly is a wonderful thing!!
AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT The exchange literally translated as ‘The Lord be with you – and with your spirit’ occurs in many of the ancient liturgies of both the Western and Eastern Churches. In that liturgical context, the expression, ‘et cum spiritu tuo,’ was long understood to have a fuller meaning than simply a congregational mirroring of the minister’s ‘Dominus vobiscum.’ Instead, it was held to look beyond the minister himself, to the Holy Spirit who was present in him and without whom the liturgical action could not take place. St. John Chrysostom (c349–407) drew this meaning out in a sermon for Pentecost, in which he spoke of the dialogue that took place before the Eucharistic prayer: ‘…you answer him, “and with your Spirit”, reminding yourselves by these words that the man who is present does nothing, and that the gifts set before you are not achievements of human nature, but that it is the Spirit’s grace, present and descending on all, that prepares that mystical sacrifice.’ The dialogue, therefore, is not a simple greeting — the liturgical equivalent of a mutual handshake. It is, rather, a recognition of the presence and action of the Spirit at each stage of the Mass. Liturgy Office Ministries Rota: 3rd/4th September Readers:
