Boundaries Fife School District is located east of the city of Tacoma in the Puyallup Valley. The district is about ten square miles in area and falls in both Pierce and King Counties of Washington State. The district includes two cities – Fife with a population of 4,970 and Milton with a population of 6,238 as well as a portion of the City of Edgewood. The district also includes the unincorporated area of Trout Lake and Fife Heights. A section of the Port of Tacoma is also included in the district. There is easy access to the district from the Fife/Milton exit #137 off Interstate 5, between Tacoma and Seattle. The drive to Tacoma is about ten minutes, to Seattle-Tacoma international Airport about twenty minutes, and to the City of Seattle about thirty minutes.

Involvement Opportunities At Surprise Lake Middle School education is a cooperative endeavor. Our parent group is called Partners in Education (PIE). They meet the first Tuesday of each month during the school year at 7:00 pm in the SLMS Staff Room. All parents are members of this organization when their student enrolls at our school. Through this parent group you can become a classroom volunteer, a chaperone for our various activities or a volunteer for one of the many programs sponsored by the PIE. If you are interested in volunteering please contact the school at (253) 517-1300. Your support and help is appreciated. We also encourage support from businesses. Surprise Lake Middle School’s 2015-2016 budget was $96,094.00.not including staff salaries and benefits.

Special Accomplishments Performance Report Surprise Lake Middle School is a caring educational environment where parents, staff and students work together to ensure that all students become healthy, self-directed young citizens. Surprise Lake Middle School serves grades 6-7 with a student body enrollment of approximately 574. The SLMS faculty is committed to providing an innovative curriculum, which includes a seven period schedule. We provide a strong basic skills program, a competency based math curriculum. Our core classes at 6th grade create a smooth transition from the elementary to the middle school setting. We provide academic challenge courses at all levels, as well as a special needs program, which places students at an appropriate instruction level.

Surprise Lake Middle School is committed to excellence in all areas as evidenced by the following 2015-2016 accomplishments: • 56% of our student body achieved Honor Roll status (3.0 gpa or above) • 2% of our student body earned a perfect 4.0 gpa. • Washington State History Fair • District Science Fair • District Art Show • 7th grade Science students traveled to Florida

Facility Information Surprise Lake Middle School was built in 1972 on 17 acres. The two-story building facility contains 20 classrooms built around an open concept library. The other building has a gym, cafeteria, and 8 classrooms. In 1992, the building was
