Brief Placement Description:

The Advaith Foundation runs children group care homes for children from economically deprived section. The homes are run as units of 105 children. The children are aged 3 to 15. Our Dream: To transform the lives of thousands of poor and deprived children into lives filled with health, happiness, promise and achievement. We believe that giving them access to quality education is the first and most important step towards this endeavor . Ankur , The children's home, is the first project of Advaith Foundation where we provide a home and facilities that help support & supplement the education. Advaith Foundation runs children group care homes for children from economically deprived section. The homes are run as units of 10 children each with about 4 staff members. The children are in the age group of 3-15. They will stay in the project during their schooling and will be visited by their parents and visit home twice a year. Volunteer Tasks & Role (including indicative working hours) • • • •

Teaching spoken English to the children through various activities/ assist the English teacher Develop reusable teaching aids. Teach children to use the computer . Design activities to convey values to children. Care for the children. General story telling

Desired Volunteer’s Skills: The volunteer should be Mature, committed, friendly, patient, enthusiastic and able to deal with kids. Location (urban or rural, distance from main cities, climate, internet, etc.) It

ICYE STeP COUNTRY- INDIA Type of project – Disabled / Education. Name of Host Placement: ASSOCIATION OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES Brief Placement Description The Association of People with Disability is a voluntary organization, with over forty five years of experience in empowering people with disabilities to become self-reliant and active members of the community in which they live. Their full inclusion in social and economic life is one of the main aims it works for. Main aims and Activities: The Association of People with Disability is a voluntary organization, striving ceaselessly in the field of disability for over forty five years with an aim to empower people with disability to become active contributors in the society. Volunteer tasks & Role: Working with children and young adults with disability in urban community, school and training centres of APD. Volunteer skills: The Volunteer must be mature, committed, dedicated and friendly and should be willing to adjust to the organization's work culture values and ethics. A minimum of 10 to 12 hours will be the timecommitment every day with breaks. Previous experience will be an added advantage. The volunteer would have to fit into any of the above mentioned projects. Location: It is located in Bangalore city. About 10 minutes by bus from ICDE office. Duration: 1 Month (Min) 4 Months (Maximum) Accommodation: ICDE India Guest House or Host Family. Food: The Volunteers cook their own breakfast at the guest house kitchen, lunch and dinner is provided from the ICDE office kitchen or volunteer will be placed in the host family. ICYE STeP COUNTRY- INDIA Type of project – Children and Education. Name of Host Placement: CSI VOCATIONAL CENTRE

Brief description: Ours is a vocational training cent, which is imparting trainings like electrician, carpentry, tailoring, electronics, fitting and other courses. There are two boarding homes, which are run for the poorest of the poor boys. This centre is running to provide education, food, clothing and shelter for our students. The centre was started about 14 years before. The school which is running in the campus is providing education from LKG to Pre university. There are opportunities to serve in the boarding homes, English medium School and technical school. Technical training school etc. Main aims and Activities: This project offers training for under privileged young people so that they can learn valuable vocational skills. The project aims to give these young people the chance to become active members of their society by giving them an opportunity to learn a trade and be self reliant and economically independent. The centre offers training in carpentry, embroidery, tailoring, electrical work etc. Volunteer tasks & Role: • • •

Teach English to the young people attending the training centre Help out with the office administration Help with workshops/teaching of other skills related to the project such as embroidery, tailoring, carpentry etc.

Volunteer skills: WE EXPECT THE YOUNG VOLUNTEER BOYS With teaching knowledge\sports\music\with manual skills to participate in the technical school WE EXPECT THE YOUNG VOLUNTEER GIRLS To serve in the English school with English knowledge to TEACH, Music\arts and crafts The both genders are expected. Location: The local community is community of trade and business. The students are drawn from economically middle class people. The boarding home boys are poor . The school children are better off children. The place called Tumkur is a big city located at about 70 kilometers from Bangalore. Bangalore is the capital city of Karnataka state. The people are very friendly, educated and cultured. They love the visitors.

Duration : 4 weeks (Min) 16 Weeks (Maximum). Accommodation & Food: The volunteer will live at the project site and avail her/ his own room in sharing basis. ICYE STeP COUNTRY- INDIA Type of project – Children and Education. Name of Host Placement: ANANYA TRUST

Brief description: Provides educational opportunity to poor children who have been rejected / or have rejected mainstream schools. We provide a care of people who are sensitive and can respond to the needs of underprivileged children We network with other NGOs to provide the best facilities to our children. Also: Running a school, teacher training and community development. Main aims and Activities: “Ananya” means unique. Unique, because the Ananya experience brings out the spirit of curiosity in children and allows them to find answers through enquiry, exploration and experiment. The school is located on a coconut grove. What makes Ananya Trust an unique place is the sense of freedom and security one feels here. The philosophy of the school has been freedom and responsibility. Everyone, including the students, are encouraged to speak his/her opninion without fear of ridicule. For the children, this is home, school and a haven where all their needs are met.

Volunteer tasks & Role: Teaching English, and other activities like plays, theatre, drawing, Painting, Games etc. The volunteer should have a willingness to teach children and work towards the overall development of poor children between the ages of 8 – 18. Desired Volunteer’s Skills: The Volunteer must be mature, committed, and friendly, responsible and should have good knowledge of English. The volunteers willing to work in this project will have to work for the full program year , travel month must be discussed with project in-charge depending on the project's free time/vacation. Change in project will not be allowed. Since it requires long time commitment. There should be no smoking or consumption of alcohol on the campus.

Location (urban or rural, distance from main cities, climate, internet, etc.): The organisation is located at Southern part of Bangalore. It's situated 25 km away from Bangalore city. The localities of area Majority families are middle level economical groups. The people are helpful to the institution. are very friendly, educated and cultured. They love the visitors.

Duration : 4 weeks (Min) 16 Weeks (Maximum). Accommodation: The volunteer will live at the project site and avail her/his own room in sharing basis. Food: Food will be provided as per the norms for all the residents of the home. Our Indian food would be Rice, Dhal, Chappathi and vegetables. Mostly Indian people will eat spicy food. No special food will be considered for the volunteer unless the volunteer should fall ill and some kind of diet requirement. ICYE STeP COUNTRY- INDIA Type of project – Disabled. Name of Host Placement: EMPACS Charitable Society- Ashraya

Brief Placement Description Ashraya is a special school for the mentally challenged children who have associated disabilities. We have children in the age group of 4 – 18 years. Our main focus is on the disabled children from the lower socio Economic group. Currently there are 30 students with 4 special educator, one physiotherapist, 3 helpers, 1 cook, 1 watchman apart from the super indent and the director. Main Aims and Activities (brief description of socio-economic context and of target groups served by the organisation): At Ashraya Center of Learning, we work with special, differently-abled children, particularly from an underprivileged background. These children are given not just an education, but life skills. Extensive therapy and training is invested into Ashraya's students at our school premises specially designed to cater to these children's needs. Intended to house 25 students, Ashraya's premises is bursting at the seams with 36 children at present. We have also had to turn away scores of disappointed parents owing to the lack of space. We are, however, taking on the challenge of expanding our premises to increase our capacity to house 60 students. We have seen so much joy as a result of our efforts so far. But we dream bigger dreams. Volunteer Tasks & Role (including indicative working hours): Working with special children from deprived background. Taking care of the special children and assisting them in their tasks. Getting involved with the children in their daily activities the students are divided into 3 groups according to their age. The volunteers are placed in each group for a considerable period of time to learn how to deal with these children and to be able to observe the teachers and learn from them. The volunteer would be able to interact with the parents of the children along with the teachers.

Desired Volunteer’s Skills: Both male and female are welcome. All volunteers must be above the age of 20 yrs. They should be enthusiastic, adaptable and honest and above all have an open mind. They should arrive with the thought in mind about how best they can contribute to the project. In the volunteers daily work there will be contact with children so a desire to work with children is beneficial. Volunteer must be fluent in one of the following language English, Hindi or Kannada. Ashraya is situated in a residential area of middle class urban area of Bangalore north. Students are transported from their homes by hired vehicle of Ashraya.

Brief Placement Description In 1997, Mahantesh G.K. and two of his friends envisioned an organisation to provide opportunities for the deserving,young, and talented children with disability of any form, or from marginalized economic backgrounds. Thus, more than a decade ago, Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled came into existence by providing free hostel facilities to the deserving students. Since inception, Samarthanam has been working to empower the visually impaired, disabled and underprivileged people in India. Samarthanam supports the visually impaired, disabled and underprivileged to keep in pace with the rest of the society by providing quality education, accommodation, nutritious food, vocational training, placement based rehabilitation and achieve personal independence. However the long term focus of Samarthanam is shaping an inclusive society which provides opportunities—without any discrimination—for the development of the visually impaired, disabled and underprivileged people. Main Aims and Activities (brief description of socio-economic context and of target groups served by the organisation): Samarthanam's mission is to empower the visually impaired, disabled and underprivileged people through developmental initiatives focusing on educational, social, economic, cultural and technological aspects. Volunteer Tasks & Role (including indicative working hours) Volunteer for reading to the visually challenged students. Volunteer for scribe service for the students. Conduct tuition classes for the students. Conduct tuition classes online through Skype voice chat. Conduct classes on communication (English), soft skills & personality development. Conduct general mentoring and counselling for the students. Teach music, dance, games and other activities to the students.

Desired Volunteer’s Skills: The volunteer should be Mature, committed, friendly, patient, enthusiastic and able to deal with disables.

Brief Placement Description DECCAN FOUNDATION is an independent, Non profit making social service Organization came in to being to address the social, economical, educational, health, environmental and other problems of the society and people to restore their basic rights for education, food, shelter , economic independence, social dignity and national integrity. We have been implementing several development projects related to Education, Community health and hygiene, integrated rural water supply, Women empowerment, Micro finance development, IGP .etc since our inception.

Main Aims and Activities (brief description of socio-economic context and of target groups served by the organisation): Our Aim: An equitable management of Human and Natural resources with a major focus on Basic health, education and reconstruction of rural economic system. As our main approach is towards women empowerment, which are ignored and neglected by the society, we have been given a special focus and attention to an integrated development of them. Hence designed and implemented unique projects ensuring women's active participation in the community development.

Volunteer Tasks & Role

As we have both Inpatient service and mobile camps, Volunteer doctors will be assigned to participate and serve in mobile OPD camps and other specialized health camps. As camps will not be organized very regularly, Volunteer Doctors will be served in the Hospital with our regular duty Doctors patient and in-patient caring, attending minor and major operations, volunteer doctors have a vast scope for learning and sharing of their experience, knowledge with the medical staff in DECCAN HOSPITAL. They themselves will be exposed to analyze the health reforms, condition of vulnerable people in accessing the basic health facilities, geographical, and social, educational and economic condition of the downtrodden community.

Desired Volunteer’s Skills 1. Health Volunteers: (Volunteers from nursing background and doctors in any Discipline)

2. Volunteers for our ongoing rural development project-2. Volunteers who knows the subject well, dealing with the patients of different ailments, able to manage the flow, time and medicine, cooperative and friendly with local community and environment, Age and gender has no bar but we prefer youth female volunteers. Volunteers may have the context of understanding the local language. Since youth can take much workload and may need to carry the responsibilities even in the late hours. They may not be having much health problems.

Location (urban or rural, distance from main cities, climate, internet, etc.): DECCAN FOUNDATION located in Kolar and Chikkaballapura districts having its registered office/Head office at Bevahalli village, Padmaghatta post, Mulbagal taluk and Regional project office at DECCAN HOSPITAL campus, Near K.S.R.T.C depot, Chintamani, Chintamani taluk.

Geographical condition: Both Mulbagal and Chintamani lies in semi arid region covered by Hill locks and undulated lands. Both the places are border and remote areas and hence ignored by the development since a long while. This area does not have any river or canal resources for irrigation and the main source of water for agriculture and other industries is Bore wells. But most of the farmers relay only on rain fed agriculture.

ICYE STeP COUNTRY- INDIA Type of project – Children Name of Host Placement: Vathsalya charitable trust

Brief Placement Description Vathsalya Charitable Trust (VCT), a non-profit, non-government organization, was registered on June 28, 1988under the Indian Trusts' Act of 1882. The name Vathsalya means mother's love in sanskrit. Homeless children experience this love either at the child care facility or in the foster homes even before they are placed in adoption. "Every child has a right to love, and be loved and to grow up in an atmosphere of love, affection and of moral and material security. This is possible only if the Child is brought up in a family."

Main Aims and Activities (brief description of socio-economic context and of target groups served by the organisation): We work with abandoned and surrendered children between the ages of 0-12. We have 32 staff and 22 foster families taking care of about 70 children. Our programmes in adoption and foster care ensures that Institutional care is the last resort and most of our children find families. We have an informal school where about 20 of our children attend regularly And learn subjects such as math, science, languages. Our Mission statement is as follows "In accordance with God's plan, Vathsalya is committed to finding families for homeless children, as every child deserves a permanent family of his/her own".

Volunteer Tasks & Role (including indicative working hours): Volunteers can spend time with children aged 0-12. They will need to think of activities and create programmes for activities for children. If they have not thought of anything they will be able to carry our infants and teach our older children. Teachers/nurses etc will make good volunteers for us.

Desired Volunteer’s Skills: We would prefer women who are either teachers or nurses. Others with an aptitude to care for children are also welcome

Location (urban or rural, distance from main cities, climate, internet, etc.): Vathsalya is in Bangalore North about 35 k.m. from the airport. We have all facilities near the NGO such as hospitals, super markets and parks. It is an upper middle class residential area. The weather is very moderate and most of the year one can manage with light and comfortable wear .

Ooty children's home

Brief Placement Description OOTY CHILDREN'S HOME is a project of “WE SERVE CHARITABLE TRUST”, Reg'd, Bangalore, and serves abused, neglected, abandoned, wayward, or orphaned children and teens. We provide a holistic approach to this service with emphasis on to the all round growth of the child in a safe and secure environment. We admit them on criteria that are laid out by our management policy and are looking into their secular social and political care which will elevate them from a level they came to another level.20 Children are cared holistically with emphasis on proper counselling and guidance. Program Co-ordinated by ELIZA MATHEW a returnee from Sweden through the CIU program 2009 and returnee from Italy through the EVS program 2011.

Main Aims and Activities (brief description of socio-economic context and of target groups served by the organisation): We as a group concerned with social economical and political jurisdiction are trying our level best to elevate them from this level that is constitutor for the social economic and spiritual care. We provide not only food, shelter and clothing but also an arena of growth in the self respected regime. Anyone who reaches at or interacts with our children can notice a space that has already been provided to grow by themselves. Anyone who participates and contributes in our endeavour of human endowment will be considered as someone great.

Brief Placement Description A rights-based child-centered community development organization. We work towards the development of the community through a systematic process of empowerment. Our partners in its process are communities of street children, child laborers and other children in distress, including abandoned and runaway children, child victims of abuse and prostitution, children of sex workers as well as the larger communities of the urban slums. APSA, with more than two decades of grassroots experience, has led from the front in designing unique programs. It combines paradigms of self-sufficiency at the micro level with advocacy campaigns and policy planning the state and national levels. APSA believes in the strength of the People and their ability to fight for their own rights. We build our work on the premise that all people have equal rights irrespective of their socio-economic, political or cultural backgrounds.

Main Aims and Activities (brief description of socio-economic context and of target groups served by the organisation): Our Vision: We will work with the community at the grassroots, with the privileged sections of the society and with the government towards preventing exploitation and marginalization of the underprivileged and to evolve social paradigms based on values of justice and nondiscrimination with those already in exploitative situations. Our Mission: To catalyze the process by which underprivileged and deprived communities use their own strengths and efforts to solve their problems and improve the quality of their lives.

Situated in a quite and peaceful area which is ideal for the Child labour, Street Children, Domestic child labours, People with Disability & Students both girl and boy to stay and study, vocational trainings, ect… and practise a academic subjects.
