Many gamers today play their favorite games without knowing that the world of video gaming was in jeoparty back in the early 80s. We definitely take things for granted when we play games and whether you like it or not, there is a company you should thank for saving it all. I’m here to talk about the Video Game Crash of 1983.

The Golden Era 1980s So the year is 1981 and Atari has settled themselves as the top dog in the video game world. Atari was making millions with their console the Atari 2600. Atari was the king of the world and had many game hits on their sleeve including the game Pitfall which was released in 1982. The arcades were also a big fad which was bringing in crowds of all ages to them. With such hits as Pacman and Space Invadors, there was no ending to such a golden era of gaming, or was it?

Competition Enters the Game The business was good which in the end ended bringing others into the market. Companies who had no idea how to make video games were coming in and started to release games just to sell them. It didn’t mattered that they were bad, they just thought they could sell anything. Atari thought the same and the result was a market saturated by bad games. Companies surely thought they could sell anything but they were wrong. The market was not only getting full of badly designed video games but they were also companies jumping in to take a chunk of the change. Therefore the console wars started. The most known consoles to be known during this console war were the Odyssey 2, Intellivision, and the Colecovision. They started to release their own games that felt rushed and lack originality. Finally, one of the hardest hits the company Atari would endure was when the game Pac-man was released for the 2600.

People were expecting a very close port of the hit from the arcades but were highly disappointed when they saw the game in action. It wasn’t what they were hoping for. In such a case, the Atari 2600 was not only showing a rushed and badly designed game, but was also showing the console’s limitations. The game looked horrid and even the sound was a pain to the ear. But, believe it or not, the game sold and it sold well. This not only showed other companies that they could sell half decent games, but that they can make millions by doing so. This was only the beginning of the end for many of these companies and the same can be said for Atari. The video game world was starting to feel the wave of games that were going to highly disappoint as Pacman wouldn’t be the first or last of them. This game started the trend of crappy games that would ruin and almost destroy the video game world in the early 80s.

The Arcade Commotion Arcades were highly popular and the place to be in the early 80s. There would be machines in any place you could imagine. They were at Doctor offices, 7-Elevens, and convenient stores of any kind. They would be everywhere racking up quarters that is until the fad ended. People were getting tired of the same games and the amount of machines being created made it even worse as there were places that just couldn’t take anymore machines. They were full! There was also the fact that a lot of games were dated and lots of them just lost all of their shine. Like I said, it was a temporary fad that was fading away as the years progressed. There was also the fact that home consoles were getting a lot more advanced and soon enough would catch up to the graphics and sound of the arcade machines. It was a ticking bomb for many of these business which invested in them. 6

The icon of the Crash, E.T. So the year is 1982, a game was announced that would place its name in the history of video gaming forever and not in a good way. By the holiday season of 1982, E.T. was released for the 2600. The game bombed and it was the final straw on Atari and the video game industry. This was it, but why did they failed so miserably with just one game? Well, the game was well known by everyone since the movie was a smash hit and Atari bought the rights to produce a video game with it. They spend millions for the rights and only about a month to program the game. It was a very rushed project which ended up hurting the company overall. Atari lost billions and was on the brink of failure. Who am I kidding, they completely failed. They thought they could buy the name of anything that was popular and sell it. By 1983 video games were giving loss after loss. The games were put up for clearance because stores couldn’t sell them. Although there were still great games coming out at retail price, it was very difficult for them to sell since anyone can just pick the games from the clearance rack and end up buying five six games for the price of one. By 1984, Atari was split up and would be the end of the video game fad.

Enter, Home Computers With video game consoles being a thing of the past, home computers entered the dying gaming market and were there to stay. They came out with the latest technology and graphics but only to sell simulations. The companies were very careful not to familiarize themselves with the horrid console market and were there just to provide fun and educational simulations. It worked well as everyone switched to home computers such as the Commodore and even Apple. Even Atari had their own home computer with the Atari 400 but with such a bad reputation, it was too little too late. These computers came packed in with disk readers and even casette players introducing new ways of interaction with the systems. Prices were also very reasonable for the most part. Having one of these computers nowadays is a joy, it comes to show you how amazing and savvy programmers had to be back then to put everything together and provide an amazing experience.

The Hero of the Crash, Nintendo So we move on to 1985, video games are a thing of the past but a company from Japan called Nintendo decides to re-introduce the American public to video games one last time. They released the NES in New York in 1985 and little by little they gained popularity. With such amazing hits such as Super Mario Brothers, the game introduced new gameplay and better graphics, but also a new way to play games. The console was also released with R.O.B. the robot which would assist you in the game Gyromite. There were different sets of the console released. Some of them came with the power pad which you would run on in order to command your runner to run in the game Track Meet. There was also a game called Duck Hunt in which you would use your gun the Zapper and shoot at the ducks on the screen. Games were fun again and by the year 1987 Nintendo took over the world of video gaming. We have to thank Nintendo for the rebirth of video gaming. if it wasn’t for them, we probably would only be computer gamers or who knows? Nintendo brought a lot of new comers into the business such as Sega and even Sony which is another story altogether. The history of video gaming is vast and interesting. Having just a little understanding on the great ordeal video games have endured can make us more concious and gracious about the games we play today. Can you even imagine a world without video games? I sure can’t!

DOS World: Commander Keen Series There are massive amount of games for the good old DOS. Games that we have forgotten nowadays still thrive in our veins for a replay. This is the case of the Commander Keen series. Many of you grew up with the Nintendo or Sega but the PC had what they call the Super Mario of the PC. Commander Keen is the name that comes to mind when you think of classic platforming action. It’s just one of those games or series that you can’t let go of. It even has a following that are creating new Keen games as we speak. Welcome to the world of Commander Keen! This is the first ever Commander Keen game. This was the first episode of a three episode series in which the main story would unfold in three different parts. This game was released in the year 1990 along with the other two episodes. The company Apogee decided to release the first episode for free as “shareware” which meant you could try the first episode and then would be offered to purchase the other two for a very reasonable price. It was a the way PC gamers would try the newest games being released and

decide if they wanted the game or not. Overall, the first series is great although the controls take a bit to get used to. If you put that aside though, you’ll be having lots of fun. The game doesn’t contain any musical score so you’ll be stuck with the wonderful PC-speaker sound. For those of you who don’t know, PC-speaker sound is sound that comes from inside the computer. An example would be the dial-up sound when you were going to connect to the internet back in the late 90s.

The second episode is just as good. Now that you got a taste for the game, you are put into more challenging levels and uncover more about the story of Billy fighting against the Aliens. You still get to use your gun and your pogo stick. Yes, did I mentioned you can jump real high with your pogo stick? Take that Mario! As I meantioned before, the levels can get quite challenging so saving your game is a must as many times as you have to. Aren’t you glad it doesn’t cost you anything to save your game? The second episode still only uses PC=speaker sound but you should be fine listening to such a beautiful tune. One interesting fact about this three episode series is that they were all released around the same

10

Retro

Gaming

Life

time so there wasn’t much time in between to wait for the episodes to be released.

Finally, episode three is the last one of the trilogy and with a very aggressive title “Keen Must Die”. The third episode pretty much puts everything the other two episodes brought and more! The game in my opinion brings you even more challenges so you will need to use your skills to the max in order to get through this one and watch the wicked ending! Putting the three first episodes of the series aside, we can move on to the lost episode which is considered Commander Keen 3.5! Keen Dreams! Every series always has an odd game in them. This is that game. Commander Keen -Keen Dreams- is like a demo of the amazing things to come. Don’t get me wrong, the game plays real good and the graphics are a major improvement

over the three previous games. The game is just as the title says. It’s a dream that turns out to be an awesome platformer adventure! What makes this episode stand out is the lack of your trusty pogo stick and gun. They’re gone! Say what? You heard it folks, you’ll have to use something I would describe as flower power to defeat your enemies which are vegetables. The whole idea of this episode is to test out the new platform engine and give the idea that Billy is just another kid battling against the enemies such as veggies. It is indeed odd but still fun.

The official fourth episode is Keen at its very best. The game uses a new engine and comes jam packed with levels. Released only a year later in 1991, Commander Keen Episode 4 Secret of the Oracle is a whole new Keen with old Keen feel. The pogo stick and gun are back unlike Keen Dreams this one doesn’t have veggies but a whole new arsenal of enemies. The levels are quite difficult and you’ll even encounter some memorable enemies such as the Dopefish!

This son of a gun really made our lives a living hell! The worst part is that he’s in one of the last levels which made me quite anxious. So close to the end and this bastard would swallow you and eat you. He’s all over the level! He would also mock you after he devoured you. It was frustrating! This is just one of many baddies ready to take Billy out!

The fifth episode wasn’t as challenging as the one before but it was still just as fun. A lot more people remember episode four because it was released as shareware, but very few remembered the last two episodes of the saga since you had to purchase them to be able to play them. Just like the other episode, this one has a lot of platforming action and your usual pogo stick and gun to get you through them. Your mission becomes more intriging as you’re inside a spaceship with the goal to destroy a machine that’s going to blow up the earth! Will Billy have enough to get through this mission? Well, you probably know the answer by now but yes, yes he does! Now lets move on the final game in the Keen series, Aliens ate my babysitter!

The last game of the series has a very funny title. It’s called “Aliens ate my babysitter” . With such a title, you would think it was something to laugh at, think again! Sadly, this is the episode that would lead to a new series. This episode felt rushed since there are glitches around the entire game. The follow up was supposed to be relased in Christmas of 1992 but was cancelled due to the fact that ID had other projects with higher interest to them. I’m not sure how much more interesting those projects would be since Commander Keen was quite popular.

Overall, this is a very memorable series. The has a small following to this day that still works on new Commander Keen games that are released as mods. Some of them are quite fun and original so I suggest you check them out at their wiki http://www.shikadi.net/keenwiki/Galaxy_Mods

This is one of those games that was just too tough for anybody. I know you heard of the Super Mario Bros 2 ordeal on why it wasn’t brought to the USA sinec it was too tough and outdated but this game on the other hand is just too.... brutal. The game doesn’t forgive you for anything! Holy Diver plays like a very tough Castlevania game. Released by Irem, you are only bound to encounter something special. The game came out in 1989 during the Famicom’s prime and was no disappointment. The game challenged even the most talented of players. Think of this game as Castlevania in mega hard mode! The game does have a lot of similarities to Castlevania as stated before. In fact, you’ll familiarize it more to Castlevania than

what it’s supposed to be. Holy Diver does deliver a very satisfactory gameplay especially when you get over the unforgiveable bosses. Along the levels, you’ll gain new powers that will come in handy to get through the levels. They really are quite handy as some will even freeze lava in order for you to use them as platforms to get through the rest of the level. This game also uses mana in order to be able to use your magic which you have to use wisely since it can run out quite fast. It’s all part of the strategy. Overall, this is an excellent game to add to your collection and also that brings amazing tough gameplay to you. If you’re looking for an old school Castlevania-type challenge then look no further. Holy Diver delivers! it’s one of the hidden gems for the good old Famicom that’s still kicking ass to this day.

Welcome back to RPG corner! This month we have a classic for the original playstation. Breath of Fire 3 was released in one of the most ecstatic years of RPG history, 1997! Such gems like Final Fantasy 7 were released and the RPG boom had started. Breath of Fire 3 had obviously two prequels and both were for the Super NES. This game introduced some new aspects although what stands out is the gameplay. The game is turn-base and it’s not easy by any means. You will need a lot of strategy to be able to get through this amazing game. You can’t just bash your enemies, you have to find their weaknesses at times especially when the boss fights come around. What I love about the game is the special abilities each character has. The main character has the ability to turn into a dragon! As you go along, not only would your character get older due to an event in the story, but you’ll also find different orbs that will help you transfomr into different dragons! Your other characters will also gain their own special abilities although you can only pick up to three party members from the bunch. Everyone has a different gaming style so you can build your own team. It’s mostly suggested to have a healer in the team, a tough member with high defense, and your main guy. Think about that! Furthermore, this game contains a wonderful score by Capcom and Japanese voice when abilities are performed. The game does take around 30-40 hours to complete and it’s quite enjoyable. One of the big points of the game is the story which will keep you hooked on this game. The game is also full of silly side quests like fishing! Yes, you can even fish in this game. This game set the standard to the game that followed as well! Overall, this game deserves a try even if you missed it the first time around. You can even download it in the PSN store and play on the PS3 or you can get an original copy which will set you back a little bit more money. Another classic worth trying, I say! Till next month!

Welcome

This is a new section which will bring you a little bit of information about portable games that being for the Gameboy, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket, among others. This will be our little section with a feel for the portable gaming in which a lot of us enjoyed in the past. I will also be talking about newer games from time to time as there are quite a few that need to be mentioned here. lets see where this section takes us. for this month, we have a couple of games for the gameboy such as Castlevania 2, kirby’s dreamland, and mega man. I also included a game for the game gear that i’m sure you haven’t heard of before. the game is called sailor moon and should not be ignored! it’s an import only so you’ll have to find yourself a copy to import. enjoy!

Castlevania 2 belmont’s revenge

This is the sequel to the first caslevania for the gameboy and it’s a vast improvement over the first entry. The game breaks up into four different stages so you have more freedom on where you want to start. don’t get me wrong now, the game is tough! Castlevania 2 also gives you a more quest feel. you also have the weapons we are all very familiar with. you can also continue your game where you left off by using the password system. it’s a system that’s not used anymore but it was one way we could keep track of our progress!

Mega man

The first game for the game boy was actually really but really challenging. not only was the game tough, but you had to deal with the tiny gameboy screen. of course, we have the technology to work around all of those obstacles. overall, it’s mega man, enough said. should i even have to recommend this legendary series to anyone?

Kirby’s dream land

kirby was brought to the spotlight with this game and the one following for the nes. the game was though to be more appealing to the younger gamers as the game was quite easy to pick up an play. after all, when you can fly through an entire stage, it becomes a breeze to blast through the entire game.

Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon

sailor moon was the anime to watch back in the early 90s. everyone including boys were into the series so why didn’t this game make it to the states? the answer is quite simple. the game gear is the reason. simple as that! There just wasn’t a big audience pushing against sega’s portable device. don’t get me wrong, i’ve played the game myself and it’s beautiful and quite fun. it even has voices and that’s saying a lot! the game is your usual plaformer in which you use sailor moon to defeat bad guys. of course, the game opens new possibilities of gameplay and what not. i recommend you to play this on emulator first in order to see if it’s something you would want to import even though the import is not that pricey, but then again, the game gear is a pain to play with.

Megaman IV Special by: Luis Zena This month we have a special article based on the fighting robot, MegaMan! The fourth installment of the series is a very interesting one. The game had already three previous entries and players had already seen everything there was to see. There would be no surprises with this entry. Capcom decided to change things up. The game featured some new changes like a kick ass looking Mega Buster shot and a new bad guy, Dr. Cossack. The new villian let himself be known right away. The game starts like any other Mega Man game. You have the eight robot masters and a new order in which to defeat them. Of course, if you are a hard core MegaMan player, you’ll want to defeat them with the Mega Buster alone. It can be done by the way. Never think of anything as impossible! Anywho, the game has the usual robot master format. Lets take a look at the story for a little though. As you may or may not know, Dr Wily wasn’t able to make it outside his castle as it was being torn down and apparently died. Come in Dr. Cossack! He sent a message to Dr Light claiming to be a genius scientist and that he’ll show his skills by sending eight of his best robots to destroy Mega Man. Mega Man decided to take the challenge therefore starting another Mega Man adventure!

The Robot Masters

The robot masters are quite interesting in this game. You have robots of almost every type of element except fire are here. Believe it or not, as I said before they can be defeated with the Mega Buster but I will go over their weaknesses of each. Each level is designed as usual with the theme of each robot master. My favorite level being Bright Man’s as not only does it have my favorite music, but the level itself is quite original. Overall, the difficulty of these levels is not high, they’re quite enjoyable and fun !

TOAD MAN- This is the first robot master to take out! Just charge your Mega Buster to take this one out before he uses his Rain Flush! BRIGHT MAN- This one is quite easy once you have the Rain Flush weapon. Use it before he uses his Flash Stopper technique and you’ll be fine. PHARAOH MAN- This guy will also be a piece of cake once you have the Flash Stopper. Use it before he shoots at you and he’ll be finished! RING MAN- Once you have the Pharaoh Shot from Pharaoh Man, you’ll be exchanging shots with this baddie. Hang in there and be sure to use and E-tank! DUST MAN- With the Ring Boomerang you’ll have an advantage against this robot master but watch out for the different tricks this one brings. SKULL MAN- This guy is tricky and you might need an E-tank or two but with the power of the Dust Crusher, he’s done! DIVE MAN- His water attacks aren’t so threatening. Use the Skull Barrier, he won’t be able to touch you. DRILL MAN- The Dive Missile will definitely come in handy when you take this one on. Be sure to use all your skills and time your jumps right.

is not high, they’re quite enjoyable and fun !

Dr. Cossack’s Castle So you have taken out all the robot master and are ready to face Dr. Cossack. His castle is quite big but you can get through it with ease. If anything, it looks to easy....something is up don’t you think? Well, like an evil acstle of an evil scientist, there are various parts of it you must explore. The challenge is never too great though. You’ll be at Dr. Cossack’s lair in no time ready for the final showdown...or is it? You’ll face Dr. Cossack and once you finish him off his daughter will appear to plead you to not kill her father. She’ll also explain that it’s all been Dr Wily’s doing, yes! he’s back once more! Seems like not even the destruction of his lair in Mega Man 3 was enough to kill this mad man. After a little more dialog, you’ll be transported to the real lair of Dr. Wily. Just like in the previous 3 games, you’ll have to battle it out against this crazy goon. He has new surprises as usual and the eight robot masters are there as well for a rematch.

Dr. Wily’s Castle In Dr. Wily’s castle you’ll encounter to toughest bad guys in the game. He gets very tricky in certain parts of the castle. As usual, you’ll get to the level in which you’ll have to defeat the eight robot masters before facing the mad man himself. You’re definitely quite close to finishing the game and putting the mad scientist in jail. Don’t you just wish you could just shoot him and end the entire series right there? It’s just a thought though...

The Games The Mega Man series has been known for their various reincarnations on multiple platforms for as long as I can remember. The fourth instalment is another one like that. The game was released for the Famicom first, then the NES in America, the game also had a Gameboy version in which they changed things around for a bit. The fourth instalment for the Gameboy would come with four robot masters from Mega Man 4 and four robot masters from Mega Man 5 to change things up a bit. It was a very interesting twist. Years later, the playstation had a re-release of all the first six games but with remixed music. The game was the same but the music scores would be different. There were mixed feelings about the music and how it should’ve been a remake with improved graphics. Overall, it felt like a lazy attempt by Capcom to cash in with their popular series. I hope you enjoyed this little special article based on the fourth instalment of Mega Man for the NES. The game is one of my personal favorites because it tried to do new things involving the story even if it ended up being the same bad guy in the end, I still liked it. As usual, the musical score is amazing and the gameplay is just a joy for your fingers. I will have more special articles in the coming issues about other greats from the golden age of video games. Maybe there will be a special on other Capcom hits like Duck Tales or even Little Nemo Dream Master. Till next month!

The Unknown World of Bootlegs Part II Kart Fighter(FC) by: Luis Zena So last month you had a little taste as to what bootlegs were for the old consoles. Now, get ready for some very interesting games. First of all, I would love to share a very odd game. It’s one of the more interesting games I’ve ever come across. The game is called Kart Fighter. This month, I’m going to take a look at this very odd but fun game. Introducing to you, Kart Fighter! Now, wait a sec! Was there really a Mario Kart game for the Famicom? Hmmm… believe it or not, this is not a Kart game at all but as the title suggest, it’s a fighter! Yes, that’s right. Only a bootleg would confuse you upside down left and right with the title screen. The game even has the Mario Kart theme song which confuses you even further. It would have been easier to say Mario Fighter or something but noooooo… thanks a lot bootleg bastards! So here is your fighter select screen. Are you freaked out yet? At least, the Mario characters are recognizable and look somewhat how they are supposed to look like. So you have to choose from, Bowser, Koopa, Luigi, Toad, Yoshi, Mario, Donkey Kong, and Princess Toadstoll. There are no cars in here to choose from as well! Believe it or not, you can actually play this against your friend in the two player mode. Just to make things more peculiar.

Just a heads up, almost all the characters will have incorrect names except for Luigi, Koopa, and I believe Peach but I might be missing another one. The game is actually not that bad. It plays like your usual bootleg fighter but it does have a charm to it. Your character has a super move! It’s up to you to discover it but to be honest, it won’t take long and you’ll be highly disappointed at its effectiveness. This game does have some songs of various Mario titles but they fall flat.

’s

ook r!

To beat the game, you have to defeat all the Mario fighters! It’s a task easier said than done since the controls are horrid but wouldn’t you like to know what amazing ending awaits you? I won’t tell! Also, one last thing I forgot to mention was that there are various stages that aren’t actually bad to look at. At least they relate to Mario huh? Enough of this atrocity! Till next month!

Hey there sport fans! It’s time to talk a little bit about your favorite sport titles for the classics! So sit back, grab a beer (not really) and enjoy! With so many sport titles out there, there are a few that have kept us coming for more. That's the case of the Game Tecmo's Super Bowl for the NES. The game is really playable even by gamers who aren't into sport titles or that have never played them. That's what makes this game stand out like no other. Not only that, but its fun factor is off the charts. A lot of gamers still play this game for Thanksgiving and that's just amazing. I am one that still plays it even though I'm not much of a football fan. The game just has a very great feel and it's what a football game should be for a console with such limitations as the NES.

The game was released back in the holiday season of 1991. It is a sequel to the first game which came with the same name except the fact that you couldn’t save your progress. Tecmo Super Bowl took care of that and introduced a battery to save your progress. The game turned out to be even better than anyone would’ve thought. So we move on years later and fans of the series take notice. Some savvy rom hackers came out with a yearly release of the game with updated rosters and other bonuses. So if by any means you think this game is gone and forgotten, think again! So while you are celebrating with the family, be sure to take a little break and turn on the good old NES and pop in a copy of Tecmo Super Bowl and if you don’t have one, you should be ashame of yourself! Don’t let your collectiong be incomplete this holiday season. Go kick some ass!
