Long Island Volunteer Center - Newsletter Volume 5

The holidays are fast approaching, and with them come the hustle and bustle of socializing, shopping, entertaining and, hopefully, quality time spent with loved ones. We at the LIVC also view the holiday season as a time to give back to our community and take action to assist those in need. The LIVC is a resource linking nonprofit agencies and those in need, with the growing number of individuals determined to make a difference in their communities. Each season our dedicated staff member, Pat Sands, compiles a list of volunteer opportunities that are available. Our current holiday list is on the homepage of our website and can also be found here. It is our wish that you will join the ranks of LlVC volunteers and make a meaningful contribution to your community. Your act of service can be big or small, depending on your interests and schedule. Your generosity and time are greatly needed, and greatly appreciated. If you are not available to volunteer at this time of year, we hope you will consider donating your time in 2014. Thank you for being a member of our growing volunteer community. The Long Island Volunteer Center staff wishes all of you a peace-filled holiday season and a joyous new year!

Long Island Volunteer Center's Agency Spotlight: This month we are featuring two amazing nonprofit agencies here on Long Island, Island Harvest and Long Island Cares.

ISLAND HARVEST Island Harvest was created in 1992 with a mission of ending hunger and reducing food waste on Long Island. Since those early days, Island Harvest has become Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, with volunteers and staff delivering millions of pounds of good, surplus food to a network of 570 Long Island-based food pantries, soup kitchens, and other non-profit organization that offer feeding services for those in need. With the holidays just around the corner there are many opportunities to volunteer with Island Harvest. Find out more information here. You can also contact the Volunteer and Community Relations Manager, Joan Flynn, at http://us6.campaign-archive2.com/?u=426291f2837e1cd099bd750c6&id=38cdd22bfa&e=2550ce9402

LONG ISLAND CARES - The Harry Chapin Food Bank Long Island Cares, founded by American singer-songwriter Harry Chapin in 1980, was Long Island’s first food bank. It has evolved into one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations serving thousands of individuals and families in need. Plenty of volunteer opportunities are available, see here for details or contact Volunteer Coordinator Alisha Summers at 631-582-FOOD ext. 119 or [email protected].

Dune Grass Planting Event On Saturday, November 2nd, 150 volunteers served 450 hours planting dune grass in Long Beach to help strengthen the dunes for possible future storms. Dune systems are usually the first line of defense against storm surges in coastal communities. The City of Long Beach, Sustainable Long Island and the LIVC organized and promoted this essential environmental disaster preparedness activity, taking strides in protecting the Long Beach community.

Long Island Volunteer Center’s How to Guides What many of you may not know is that we have "How to Guides" available on our website, to assist you in registering on the LIVC website, locating volunteer opportunities and tracking your volunteer hours. The Guides are easy reads and will help you to get started with volunteering. Please visit our website and click on the FAQ at the top right-hand side of the homepage to access the guides.

Freeport Seed-to-Table Community Garden Event, November 21, 2013 On Thursday, November 21, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, at the Cedarmore Corporation in Freeport, volunteers will be creating a community garden. http://us6.campaign-archive2.com/?u=426291f2837e1cd099bd750c6&id=38cdd22bfa&e=2550ce9402

Cedarmore Corporation runs a farmers’ market and various anti-hunger programs in the community. The purpose of the garden is to have local residents participate in growing their own food, teach them about nutrition, and strengthening the community. Please view here to learn more about this opportunity and to register.

Meet Cheryl Brancato

LIVC's data management and reporting guru, Cheryl Brancato, came to us via Dowling College’s adult ed offering on nonprofit management. One of her assignments was to pick a nonprofit and analyze it for mission, governance, structure, and programming. After selecting the LIVC and learning about us, she joined our all volunteer management team and has been tackling the necessary work to support the volunteer generation campaign and NYS grant deliverables. In addition, she has been integrally involved in service learning training at Nassau Community College, work groups to study innovations in volunteer management, and support of training events for volunteer administrators. Her professional background includes hospital administration and currently she works part-time at one of LIVC's partner agencies, FEGS, a prestigious health and human service agency.

Thank You A big thank you to those individuals who have recently registered and joined the ranks of Long Island Volunteer Center volunteers. We hope that you will be inspired to connect with a local nonprofit agency, and become part of our http://us6.campaign-archive2.com/?u=426291f2837e1cd099bd750c6&id=38cdd22bfa&e=2550ce9402
