PRIDE AND PURPOSE
GO OILERS!
Off to a Strong Start! The start of the school year at Richmond High, 2017-2018, has been humming along smoothly. We are excited to introduce new staff and new Administrators to the school this year, as well as celebrate our experienced teachers that help make Richmond High a great place to have purpose, and have pride. One of our proudest achievements as a staff is our ability to bring back highly qualified Alumni graduates back to RHS. Just this year Mr. Chacon, Mr. Arnold, and Ms. Ortiz have returned to their familiar hallways. The ability to have our alumni come back to the school means they have strong connections with the community, and know how to connect with our students.
Academies Our school boasts some of the best Academies in the district. We have Law, led by the fearless Mr. Mooney, Multimedia, headed up by visionary Ms. Gomes, EPA (Engineering) by brilliant Ms. Ahuna, which incorporates technology and building, Health, by our guru Mr. Seeber, and CAPA, led by our thespian Mr. Wilson. The district has also approved a $1.3 million theater upgrade for our school, due to their confidence in our programs.
Tablet Roll-out Tablets have come to Richmond High! This year our district has pushed a 1:1 initiative to bring tablets to the school. It’s a great feeling to see students sitting in the mall-area with their computers. This has also allowed students and teachers to access more research databases online, use Google Classroom, and work to be competitive atowards college and career students. For a student to receive a tablet, they just have to have a parent sign a tablet form and students can check one out for school and home use. We can already see the change in the campus, as students take care of their computers and learn responsibility by bringing them daily to all of their classes. We are excited for a bright future with these new resources!
Club Fair! During lunch in October, our new Leadership teacher, Mr. Deidehban, helped the school to organize club fair, which demonstrated to our students all the programs we have to offer.
Link Crew Rocks! Another year means another group of Freshmen! At Richmond High, we love our Freshmen and take care of them; they are the future of our campus. Link Crew Leaders work tirelessly with their leaders Ms. Sciacca, Ms. Valenzuela, Ms. Shelbrick and Ms. Schmalz to create an environment where our Juniors and Seniors look out for, and care, about the social and academic well-being of our Freshmen.
PE’s New Look This year our PE staff, led by Mr. Jaymot, have revamped their program with new fitness goals, and a new way to get kids active. Two of our new teachers are also alumni! Mr. Arnold (06) and Mr. Ayala (12). We see your dedication!

On track-to Graduate! At Richmond High School, our three awesome counselors, Ms. Calderon, Ms. Valenzuela, and Mr. Alejandre work to help our students achieve A-G requirements. By achieving these goals, students have more options after High School for College and Trade Schools. Some of the programs that assist students are:
College & Career Center. Led by Ms. Jann, this organization works to connect students with multiple college workshops, university visits, and completion of financial aid packets. After School Tutoring. All of our teachers offer tutoring hours for students to take advantage of after school. Whether it is needing a quiet place to work, or needing extra support before a test, our staff have you covered. Ivy League Connection. The ILC gives opportunities to sophomores and juniors to take college level classes on the East Coast and Midwest at some of the top universities in Leadership and Social Justice.
Athletics/Clubs. Today’s colleges are looking for well-rounded students. It’s not always grades, they want to see how students work together, and give back to the community. Academies. Our Academies work together to make sure that no Richmond student gets left behind. Teachers review grades, and help students set goals to get the most out of their time here. When you leave, what will be on your resume?
EDMENTUM Ms. Calderon helps our students with credit recovery through the program Edmentum after school. Ask her through her email how your student can benefit too! JESSICA CALDERON

Spotlight: CAPA Shines in Fall This fall Richmond High School and CAPA (Performing Arts Academy) are making some major additions to the program, led by Mr. Wilson. CAPA will be putting on the performance of Great Gatsby in the month of November, with the senior class performing, juniors helping with technical work, and the sophomore class building the sets. Mr. Milam’s class in room 508 has recently gone through a transformation to include computers, along with his woodshop class. Students are expected to complete woodworking, while seniors explain the setting of the play to coordinate with set building.
The play will run November 16th-17th for $5 per person, and the public is encouraged to come out and see it. CAPA has also been bridging the program California Shakes with Richmond High, going to observe performances already through field trips, and working with Berkeley Repertoire to see evening plays. This winter the Richmond Theater will be going through a complete a $1.3 million renovation with new technology, lighting, video and sound. We can’t wait to see this program continue to grow and become a capstone of life here in Richmond for both students and the community.
