Realise it or not, deep down we are all chemists. Every time we light a match, boil an egg or simply breathe in and out, we perform a chemical reaction. Our bodies grow, develop and function entirely as a result of the chemical processes that go on within them. Our clothes and nearly all the objects of our everyday life are manufactured by the chemical transformation of raw materials like oil or iron ore, or by the chemical treatment of natural products like wood or wool. Most of the food we eat is grown with the help of chemical fertilizers and kept from rotting with chemical preservatives. If we are to protect the planet from the harmful effects of human activity, we need to understand as clearly as possible the complex chemical systems which make up our environment of land, sea and air. You will build on the Chemistry you have studied in GCSE, and in some cases you will understand for the first time why these reactions happen. You will study the building blocks of life itself and build some of these substances for yourself. Throughout the course you will develop your practical ability and understanding of why and how we analyse the results of experiments.

Why study this course at S6C?

All Science at S6C is taught in new state-of-the-art laboratories.

Entry Requirements

To study this course you will need grade B or above in GCSE Chemistry. If you have not studied separate sciences, Science Core and Additional need to have a minimum of a grade B (where the exam scores are at grade B). GCSE Maths must be at a grade 6 or above and GCSE English must be at a grade 5 or above.

Progression opportunities

Students who study Chemistry may wish to pursue a career in the fields of Chemical Sciences (e.g. Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry or Chemical Engineering to name but a few). Equally studying Chemistry leads well into careers in fields such as Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Forensic Science, Optometry, Radiography, Nursing, Food Science and many more.

What our students think

Economics Type of qualification - A Level Exam Board - Edexcel Course Description

Economics is split into two distinct areas – microeconomics, which is the study of industries and individual firms, and macroeconomics, which covers the national economy and the way in which economic decisions impact on businesses. In microeconomics in Year 12 you will learn about supply and demand and how individual markets work, the actions governments may take to influence these markets and the way in which markets react to external factors. You will consider issues such as the effect of the housing boom on house prices, how the national minimum wage affects markets and how the price of a litre of petrol is determined. In Year 12 macroeconomics we consider national economic issues such as how interest rates and inflation affect each other and the businesses and individuals within the economy, what causes recessions and the policies available to governments to address slowdowns or booms in the economy and how and why the government tries to reduce unemployment levels.

managing businesses and households in ‘the real world’, by understanding the impact that economic policies have, and is therefore valued by employers in many different areas. Economics is particularly useful if you are potentially seeking a career in financial services or based in the City of London.

What our students think

“I started this year with no economic knowledge, but was still accepted on to the course. I’ve really enjoyed studying Economics this year and am now considering it as a university prospect. Since the beginning of the year, I have begun to understand more about the choices people make within the economy and how it could affect others. The most interesting topic to study was reviewing the Chancellor’s budget and how it affected the different parts of the economy. I’ve really enjoyed my year studying economics and I advise anyone to apply, you won’t regret it!” Ally, previously Bishop Wordsworth’s School

In Year 13, we consider the economics of businesses and globalisation, including poverty and the Eurozone.

Why study this course at S6C?

Economics gives you an excellent understanding of what is happening in the business and financial world around you. How will a rise in interest rates affect your monthly spending? What can your business do to flourish even in a recession? Why do we have such a huge – and increasing – national debt when the government insists that it has cut back on spending? Economics helps you make sense of political and business decisions, and understanding the implications of trading with foreign companies. Economics is contemporary and rooted in the real world, and we will look at topical news events and discuss and debate their consequences as well as learning about economic theory and identifying it in the economic environment we live in. Lessons involve lots of discussion and student input – student examples, ideas and arguments and debate and questioning is actively encouraged. Support from your subject teacher is always available, and small group or one to one sessions run where necessary to support your learning. We also use activities and educational games to gain an understanding of economic concepts and there is lots of laughter along the way!

Entry Requirements

To study this course you will need grade 5 or above in GCSE Maths and English Language. There is no requirement to have studied Economics at GCSE.

It is designed to give learners the transferable knowledge and skills to progress to higher education, further study or direct employment in the sport and physical activity sector. This qualification is not just about being able to play sport as the core enables the learner to demonstrate their understanding of sport within the wider contexts of coaching, anatomy and physiology, the effects of exercise on the body, the organisation and development of sport, and the opportunity to organise sporting events. Staff at S6C are experienced external moderators for the internally assessed coursework units and they played a large part in the development of the course writing units and chapters within the course text. Being a small centre, students will be given the individual attention that this diverse course requires, including 1-1 support on all assessment elements to ensure that every student reaches their full potential.

Progression opportunities

Sport is a subject that opens doors to a number of careers and life options. Sport, nutrition and health are huge topics of discussion in the world today, and as the fight against obesity and sedentary lifestyle issues continues, the knowledge you gain from a course such as this will only grow in importance and relevance. Sport is an excellent base for a university degree in sports science, sports management, health care, or exercise and health. Sport can open up a range of career opportunities including: sports development, sports coaching, physiotherapy, personal training or becoming one of the next generation of PE teachers. The transferable skills you learn through your study of Sport, such as decision making and independent thinking are also useful in any career path you choose to take.

What our students think

“Sport is brilliant, I really love the coaching and there’s lots of practical work. For work experience I coached football at Leehurst Swan and Harnham Junior School which allowed me to put the theory into practice.” Owen, previously Trafalgar School
