Our vision is to foster and conduct applied and basic research on the function and operation of the natural and managed ecosystems of the Sierra Nevada, to apply this learning to resource management, then connect this knowledge to the broader public.

We did the research. We now know how to stop the wildfires. We invited our community to help us decide what to do with that science. We figured out a prescription that everyone—including loggers and environmentalists—agrees on. Our partners found the money to implement the strategy on 2,500-acres at Sagehen as a demonstration. We are scaling up the strategy, with larger projects like Lake Tahoe West, and the Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative.
So what’s the problem?
1. The existing timber industry is tooled up for large trees, but most of the current and future material is small-diameter wood; 2. We need to build a new, small-wood industry; 3. Without infrastructure investment, we can’t afford to act at scale.
