District #27 Parents/Guardians Process for Determining School Closure

The decision making process for closing schools is not an exact science. No matter what decision is made, not everyone will be happy or always agree. That is something we understand and accept. In general, due to not having rural school bus routes, we look at the projected wind chill and proceed with our walkers in mind. If the projected wind chill is negative 20 or below, we will give strong consideration to closing. We also try to make that decision the night prior to closing whenever possible. That allows parents to make childcare provisions in a less rushed environment. However, with the unpredictability of the weather, there will be instances in which we wait until morning to make the decision. Therefore, we suggest always having an alternative plan for childcare in the event that school is cancelled in the morning. District #27 works closely with the National Weather Service of Lincoln and is advised by the Logan County Emergency Management Agency. We pay close attention to whether Logan County is under a wind chill warning or wind chill advisory. At District #27 we recognize that some parents might not have transportation, or might feel that it is not safe for their children to come to school. Ultimately, the decision to send a child to school on a cold day is up to the parent. On a day-to-day basis, the superintendent will decide whether to make absences due to cold weather excused or unexcused.
