Catawba County Schools School Closing Information Update TO: FROM: DATE:

The winter months are quickly approaching and we will likely experience modifications to the school day, such as delayed openings, early dismissals and/or school cancellations. Such modifications will affect all schools throughout the Catawba County System. To ensure the safety of all staff and students, we are asking that parents and students be aware of the following resources and procedures: 1.
You may watch television channels WSOC-TV 9, WBTV 3 and WCNC 6. You may also listen to the following area radio stations: WNNC/WIRC 1230 AM and WHKY 1290 AM (Hickory). If you have internet access, information will also be available on our website at www.catawbaschools.net.

A decision to close the schools or to consider a delayed opening will be made by 5:30 a.m.

Blackboard Connect, the Catawba County Schools’ Parent Notification System, will call parents as soon as a decision to close or delay schools is made.

Delayed openings will be used if warmer weather is predicted. We do not like to use delayed openings because of supervision problems for working parents and will attempt to use them as little as possible.

In cases of severe weather or other emergency conditions which result in the closing of the local public schools, QUEST will follow the same schedule that Catawba County Schools implements. If schools open on a two-hour delay for inclement weather, QUEST will open on a two-hour delay - opening at 8:00 a.m. instead of 6:00 a.m.

Please do not call the weather bureau, radio or television stations, newspapers, school officials, school offices or the sheriff’s department. All announcements will be made by radio, television, Blackboard Connect system, Facebook, Twitter and the Catawba County Schools’ website.

Traditionally, all three school systems in Catawba County have tried to collaborate on decisions involving the closing of schools, but there may be times that Catawba County Schools operates on a different schedule.

THE ABSENCE OF ANY ANNOUNCEMENT MEANS SCHOOLS WILL BE OPEN AS USUAL. When making a decision on opening or closing schools, school officials are primarily concerned with the safety and welfare of all students and employees.
