SD Lessons from Abroad Meeting MINUTES and UPDATES October 30, 2012 3:30 PM, Webex videoconference

Meeting Format Meeting was held via Webex videoconference. o Good option during the busiest times of the year, so we will try to alternate this option with in-person meetings. 2. Registration Registration is live on www.lessonsfromabroad.org and facebook! No registrants yet at the time of meeting. Students have a pull-down menu to choose session topics of interest when they register There is a registration option for invited panelists and guests (keynote, etc.) who will need a lunch but are not expected to pay, and are not part of the conference committee. Reminder: Conference staff and all other professionals participating will need to pay the $20 conference staff registration. Register now! 3. Website/Facebook Emily continues to be our contact for all web updates Suzanne will post monthly registration reminders on Facebook Kristi and Suzanne will collaborate on organization of the photo contest, using Facebook as well as voting on the day of the conference. 4. Content Committee Updates Volunteers needed to moderate sessions and serve as panelists – please contact Alison Droster if interested:
[email protected] Most recent session schedule (work in progress) and session description doc available at conference planning site: https://sites.google.com/site/sdreentry/home/content o Overall schedule still may be subject to minor changes, but session schedule will remain the same (see “Other Updates” at the end of this document) Ali is working with Emily Moore to create a google doc for the session schedule, so that we can all see what is still needed. 5. Opportunities Fair Karen reached out to exhibitors at the NAFSA Region XII conference Karen and Elise trying to diversify participants in the Opportunities Fair Blurb about Fair on www.lessonsfromabroad.org page under “Conference schedule” Opportunities Fair exhibitors will be able to send materials to Point Loma Nazarene. o Exhibitors who are unable to attend the conference will have the option of sending materials only
6. Lessons from Abroad Handbook and materials Chris gave updates from SF Bay Area conference (“resource book”, cover w/schedule). San Diego conference plans to use a bound handbook, as we have in the past. Allison Howitt will be spearheading the handbook initiative for our conference, as well as collaborating on making a common template for all LFA conferences. Thanks, Allison! Thank you to UC San Diego for offering to sponsor handbook printing for our SD conference. 7. Site & Setup Adrienne is working on a marketing plan for SDSU; more info to come at next meeting 8. Promotional logos/ flyers; Marketing Electronic versions of marketing materials were sent out with last meeting’s minutes. Please print and distribute or share electronically with your students and colleagues! Start spreading the word! 9. Next meeting Next meeting – Nov 27, 3:30pm at Point Loma Nazarene University, 3900 Lomaland Drive San Diego, CA 92106 – Study Abroad Office lounge Happy Hour to follow, 5-6pm at Raglan: http://www.raglanpublichouse.com/ RSVP and call for agenda items will be sent out via the listserv one week prior * * * ** Other Updates: Karen, Mike and Chris attended Los Angeles Lessons from Abroad conference, Saturday Nov 3 Conference was a huge success, ~200 attendees We will bring the Los Angeles LFA 2012 handbook to the next meeting to share LA conference used The Homecoming video at the beginning of the conference as a way to set the tone for the conference – we are considering doing this as well Don Bartletti gave an excellent presentation at the end of the conference about his international work as a photojournalist – we are asking him to come and speak in San Diego as well.
