I just emailed someone to see if there is one master document that could be forwarded that summarizes the PD plan. As you know, folks are on spring break, so it may be after everyone returns before I have responses. Most of our PD is focused on how to use the EngageNY materials. Teachers all over the district are telling me that the rigor of the new materials is much higher than previous materials and that students are really understanding the material at the conclusion of the units. It is challenging for students, but the feedback is really promising. The vast majority of teachers are giving positive feedback and say that these materials are superior to their other materials. While I wait for responses from folks, I will provide you a link to our professional development catalog which is also on our website. You will be able to see the courses and instructors on this site. You can see more if you click on the catalog link as well. http://webs.spokaneschools.org/prolearn/ The next phase of the PD will shift to some math content. For example, we are finding that we will likely need to do some courses on fractions for teachers since this curriculum has so much content on this topic. This will be important to help support teachers who may have some gaps in their own knowledge base. If I run across any other documents, I will forward them.

We are moving forward with the same time line as outlined in the Board meeting that you attended. We adopted the interim plan this year, have piloted with hundreds of teachers this year and will have hundreds of teachers using these interim materials next fall. Additionally, we have been providing professional development to teachers as well. Thank you for your inquiry.

Thank you for your reply. What is the delay, then, in providing the children with a solid math program? A year in an administrator's life is just water under the bridge. Thanks for the email. Clearly, the ongoing messaging will be critical as we move forward. I think the confusion is most likely due to the fact that we are not fully transitioned to the interim curriculum. We have hundreds of teachers who have piloted an EngageNY unit, but we have not made the full switch yet. Next year, hundreds of teachers in grades K-5 will be fully switched to the interim plan. In those classrooms, we will collect the old math materials, box them up, and remove them from the schools. The following year everyone will switch over and be using the new materials (and the old materials will be totally removed). (In grades 6-8, everyone will be using the interim materials next year). The interim plan will have students using the fastest algorithms. Students will be taught the algorithms and will have an opportunity to practice them to fluency. Let me know if I fully answered your questions.

Dr. Redinger and Dr. Gering: I hope you're well. A parent who appears to know nothing of the math "wars" told me recently that, in her child's elementary school, EngageNY will have the children working together on an "inquiry-based model," coming up with their own methods for solving problems. Students also are still working from Connected Mathematics and Investigations in Number, Data, and Space. What is your comment about this? Laurie Rogers
