SLOVAK ELECTION DATA PROJECT The Slovak Election Data Project makes election data from the Slovak Republic available to academic researchers, students, policy-makers and the general public. The data sets are constructed from publicly available information published by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic (Štatistický úrad Slovenskej republiky). They are provided in a number of standard computer-readable formats, and – as such – are more convenient for use in research and analysis than the .xls files provided by the Statistical Office. The project is managed by Marek Hlavac, currently a graduate student at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He can be reached by e-mail at
[email protected].

DATA DESCRIPTION The slovakia_parl_election_2002 data set contains the final results of Slovakia’s 2002 parliamentary election. This election was held on September 20th and September 21st, 2002. The data set contains the number and proportion of valid ballots cast for each participating political party at the municipality, district, region and country levels. At the district, region and country levels, furthermore, the data set includes information about the number of voting precincts, voter eligibility, as well as the number of ballots enveloped that were given out to and, in turn, submitted by the voters. The data set consists of four types of records (indicated by record_type) based on the administrative units that the record covers:

Please note that this data set does not include results at the ward (obvod) level, as this administrative unit was not established until 2004. Depending on the administrative unit that your analysis focuses on, you may wish to restrict the data set only to the relevant record type. If, for instance, you are doing your analysis at the district level, you may wish to keep only observations with record_type = 3.
