Making the Text Come Alive: Exploring Nuance and Organic Insights through Socratic Seminars with John Zola March 17-18, 2018 Concordia International School Shanghai 999 Mingyue Road JinQiao Pudong 201206 Shanghai
Join this lively session and discover how Socratic Seminars provide unique opportunities for enlightened conversations in all subject areas and grade levels. Seminars explore the issues, ideas and values found in a challenging text as students socially construct meaning in rigorous and authentic discussions. The “destination” of a seminar is more fluid with the primary outcome being students’ ability to make meaning and explain ideas in a structured setting. Students who participate in seminars report an excitement about a collaborative making of meaning, a setting where student ideas are valued, and where the collective work is NOT about coming to a pre-determined answer. Ideas are shared; participation, both active and by listening, is safe; and the conversation is organic. Upon systematically integrating seminars in the classroom, students gain more confidence in honing literary instincts, sharpening analytical skills, initiating more risk taking and deepening their appreciation for empathetic and collaborative learning.
Workshop Description During this highly experiential journey, educational consultant and Socratic Seminar expert John Zola leads you in a Socratic Seminar Weekend Workshop. John Zola spent 32 years as a high school social studies teacher, most recently at New Vista High School, a “break the mold” public high school in Boulder, Colorado. Throughout his career, John developed interactive teaching materials and trained colleagues in active learning strategies and Socratic seminars. He has conducted numerous workshops that help teachers make the work and voice of students central in the classroom, while also, in many cases, reducing the grading load of the teacher. John’s sessions are interactive and participatory with a strong focus on practical classroom applications. In addition to his work in the secondary classroom, John taught Social Studies methods courses for the University of Colorado and, for four years, was the Director of School and University Partnerships in the School of Education. John now conducts in-service trainings on teaching strategies, discussion, civic education, and Socratic seminars in a variety of locations around the United States, Central Europe, and Asia.
