CONIFER HIGH SCHOOL – Student Handbook EMERGENCY CLOSING Jeffco Schools announce winter weather emergency closing on the following radio stations: KHOW KTLK KOA KKYD KEZW KCFR KWBI KBCO KYGO KIMN, KOSI KYBG KOOL KBPI KWMX KQKS Parents may also call the district’s information hotline at 982-6600. SCHOOL CLOSURES The district makes every effort to decide and announce decisions to close schools before 6 a.m. The planning and review process actually begins the night before. Once a decision is made, a message will be sent to Jeffco families via School Messenger and local media will be notified. The district’s telephone hotline at 303982-6600, and the school system Web page are also updated. There is a link to this information from the district’s home page. ACTIVITY STICKER The 2017-18 High School Student Activity Fee is $50 and will allow the high school student free admission to any regular season athletic event held at Jeffco facilities, exclusive of any tournaments and invitationals. The student ID will indicate whether the student purchased a pass, with either a word or letter designation printed by the photographer. If there is a late registration and the photographer does not have the ability to print the designation on the ID, then an activity sticker will be added to the pass. Conifer HS will not be responsible for refunds for admission to games if you do not have your Activity Ticked on your student ID. Please see the Financial Secretary to add the sticker to student’s ID. Students must still anticipate paying an admission fee when attending contests at non-Jeffco facilities. Admission prices are: adults $6, students without a sticker $4, the pass will pay for itself after attending 13 events. Please note: If a student allows another student to use his/her pass, then the pass will be confiscated and privileges will be revoked, with no refund granted. attend assemblies, listen carefully and behave in a safe and appropriate manner. ATHLETICS Conifer High School supports the twenty-one sports which are sanctioned by Jefferson County Public Schools. Student responsibility It is the student’s responsibility to attend each of his/her classes on time and to be prepared to work. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed as soon as possible, and to maintain communications with his/her teachers. Parent responsibility It is the parents’ responsibility to notify the school as soon as possible if their student will be absent, no later than 2:00 p.m. on the day after the absence. Teacher responsibility Teachers will notify parents when attendance becomes a concern. Teachers will maintain an accurate record of each student’s attendance.

CONIFER HIGH SCHOOL – Student Handbook Administrator responsibility An administrator will be involved when the student’s attendance continues to cause concern for the teacher and the student. An administrator will talk with the student and parents to determine the course of action. ATTENDANCE OFFICE In order for a parent/guardian to excuse a student’s absence, a call or in person contact must be made to the attendance office by 2:00 p.m. the day after the absence. Please refer to “Attendance Procedures” in the Jeffco Code of Conduct book for a list of excused absences. When students have appointments and miss one or two class periods in the middle of the day, they must provide a Dr.’s note to the attendance office or it will not be excused. Students must sign out, and then back in when he/she returns. Early finals will not be given, students can arrange to make up any missed finals the following semester or during the summer break. CONTACTING STUDENTS FOR EMERGENCIES Classes will be interrupted ONLY at the request of parents or others in case of serious emergency as explained over the phone to the receptionist secretary. Reminders of after-school activities will be posted on the message board outside the attendance office with student’s name boldly written on outside of note. Water is allowed. DRESS CODE Dress in a fashion that reflects respectable taste and is appropriate for a school day. Inappropriate clothes include: 1. Clothing displaying vulgar writing/weapons 2. Symbols or sexual reference 3. Clothing that is excessively revealing such as loose fitting or low cut halter tops, mesh shirts without a t-shirt underneath or shirts which expose the midriff 4. Clothing with alcohol, tobacco or controlled substance references 5. Head coverings (with the exception of hats) worn in the building including bandanas, scarves & hoodies are prohibited 6. Underwear may not be showing 7. No spaghetti straps 8. No tank tops that are considered underwear 9. Boys must wear short or long sleeved shirts. Tank tops or cut off sleeves are not permitted **Jeffco Code of Conduct will be strictly enforced. FINANCIAL OFFICE The Financial Office is located in the main office area. The Financial Office will collect fees, fines and maintain financial records. Credit cards may be used for payment. Fees/fines may also be paid on the JeffcoConnect website. Hours of operation are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. (Closed M: 7 – 12:15, TH: 12:15 – 3:00, and lunch 11:30 – 12:15) 303.982.5238 FOOD SERVICE AND CONIFER JUNCTION STORE Our Food Court has a variety of snack options available throughout the day. Students enrolled in the business/marketing programs may be employed in the store for credit. The store is conveniently located in the lobby and is open during the school day. Students may visit the

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING All information for the counseling office can be found on the counselor website SEMINAR (rev. 10.11.17) Philosophy: Seminar gives students the opportunity to meet with teachers for help, work on assignments and class projects, or participate in sustained silent reading. Other activities such as assemblies, registration, LoboTrax, LINK activities, etc. may be scheduled during Seminar on an as needed basis. Student must use a Blue Sheet to leave their Seminar homeroom and meet with their teacher(s). Seminar attendance is important for students’ academic success and a student must achieve 80% or greater attendance to earn a passing grade for their Seminar class (1/4 credit per semester). Note: When determining the 80% attendance, please differentiate between a student absent from Seminar only and a student absent for the entire day. Outcomes: o

Keep students in their assigned Seminar for the first 10 minutes – Do not release students with Blue Sheet passes until after 7:35 a.m. Students should be encouraged to develop responsible behaviors by carrying their Blue Sheet during seminar, not losing their Blue Sheet, and having teachers’ signatures (or stamps) on the Blue Sheet. It is recommended that the Seminar teacher verifies the student’s Blue Sheet has been signed (or stamped) by teachers. The Blue Sheet must be signed (or stamped) by the sending teacher and the receiving teacher must sign (or stamp) the Blue Sheet for the student to be sent to the next teacher or return to their Seminar teacher.

Students earn two points if they arrive at school during the first ten minutes of Seminar - by 7:35 a.m. on Regular Green Days Students earn one point if they arrive after 7:35 a.m. but before 8:15 a.m. Students earn zero points if they arrive after 8:15 a.m.

Students earn two points if they arrive at school during the first ten minutes of Seminar – by 8:30 a.m. on Late Start Green Days Students earn one point if they arrive after 8:30 a.m. but before 8:40 a.m. Students earn zero points if they arrive after 8:40 a.m.

o Students should be motivated to maintain good academic standing in all their coursework at Conifer. Teacher can use the weekly eligibility report (found on the restricted teacher drive) to notify students of poor grades. The eligibility report should also be used to give permission for student participation in club meetings, assemblies, or other activities. o During seminar, teachers and club sponsors should schedule club meetings, assemblies, and activities through the Seminar Google Calendar. This will prevent over-scheduling and unnecessary conflicts. o

The library is a great resource in our school. Students wanting to go to the library during Seminar need to pre-arrange a pass with a librarian the day before.

o Students on the No-Pass list need to have an adult escort to travel between classrooms or to use the restroom. Before requesting an escort, the seminar teacher or main office needs to verify the student’s schedule to ensure the student has the teacher.

CONIFER HIGH SCHOOL – Student Handbook o Teachers need to refer to the teacher absentee list to avoid sending students to a substitute during Seminar. LEARNING CENTER The CHS Learning Center is the heart of student academic support. We are an RTI school where avenues for academic intervention are critical. The Learning Center is a place where students go to take make-up exams, get assistance on writing projects, receive academic tutoring, and much more. The Learning Center is available 4 periods a day and staffed with 3-4 core teachers each period. STUDY HALL All Conifer High School Freshmen and Sophomores are required to take a Study Hall. Our staff has defined the purpose of Study Hall as follows: To create an atmosphere and set of behavioral expectations that are conducive to a productive and responsible learning environment. Every student enrolled in Study Hall is expected to:  Follow the CHS Student Code of Conduct and Policies  Prepare for future success by selfadvocating for a quality education HOMEWORK PICK UP/ MAKE UP WORK Homework may be requested for students who miss school for a long period of time. Homework may be picked up through the main office. Students have two days for every day off to make up work. Direct contact with the teacher is the quickest method to expedite this or submit a ‘Absent Student Homework Request’ found on the CHS website. LOCKERS Lockers will be assigned to students at registration. The lockers are the property of the school. Lockers may be searched by school officials at any time. We recommend that you do not store money or personal items of value in the lockers. Make certain that your locker is locked and do not give your lock combination to anyone. Any damage to your locker will be charged to you. CONIFER HIGH SCHOOL AND JEFFERSON COUNTY SCHOOLS ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS FROM YOUR LOCKER. Report any problems with your locker to the campus supervisor. Rev. 10/11/17

LOST AND FOUND The campus supervisor(s) will maintain the lost and found area. Anything that is found should be turned in to the campus supervisor. If you have misplaced something, check with the campus supervisor(s). NO SMOKING AT SCHOOL OR SCHOOL FUNCTIONS Smoking is not permitted; this applies to all adults and to all students both inside and outside the building, on school grounds, and while attending any school sponsored activity. OPEN/CLOSED CAMPUS Juniors and seniors may leave campus during lunch if they are in good standing, Junior or Senior grade appropriate credit status. Freshmen and Sophomores are required to remain on campus during the school day. Students may not sit in cars on campus during free time. Freshmen & Sophomores are not allowed in parking areas and may not leave campus for any reason during school hours. OUT OF BOUNDS AREAS These areas include temps, parking lots, athletic fields, wooded areas, walkways and corridors in which the student has no authorized or legitimate purpose. These areas also extend to any school property not supervised by a CHS staff member. STUDENT VEHICLE REGISTRATION/PARKING/FINES In order to obtain a parking permit, students must meet the following criteria:  Juniors and seniors with a driver’s license, grade appropriate credit status, and parent permission may apply for a student parking permit;  All students with parking permits must be in “good standing” (i.e., behavior, attendance, etc.)  Abide by parking contract A parking fee of $150/year will be collected and can be paid by semester. All cars parked at CHS must have the proper registration and display the proper CHS parking permit. To maintain privileges, students must drive in a safe manner. CHS is not liable for cars parked at school. Improper parking or moving violations will carry a fine and be collected by the school financial secretary before report cards, registration or a

CONIFER HIGH SCHOOL – Student Handbook diploma will be given to the student. CARS ILLEGALLY PARKED MAY BE TOWED AT THE OWNER’S EXPENSE. Students may not park in the staff or library parking lot(s). **Parking Contract will be enforced at all times. PARENT TEACHER STUDENT ASSOCIATION (PTSA) Composed of parents, students, and teachers, this group will act on ways to improve Conifer High School. This group will also act as a clearing house for student activities and offer scholarship support to all students. There is a small membership fee. ACCOUNTABILITY COMMITTEE This group is open to all parents & staff members, serving as the cooperative decision making, accountability and advisory committee to CHS and strives to create and maintain a positive learning environment, balancing academics, athletics and activities. SCHOOL PROPERTY/CAMPUS: The campus of Conifer High School is the 35 acres of developed land that encompasses the athletic fields, parking lots and the school building. Students are not allowed in the forested area of the school property unless they have teacher permission and only when supervised by a staff member. LIBRARY Conifer High School houses a school and public library. To access its resources of print, electronic and audio/visual materials, students need a Jefferson County Public Library card. Library hours are extended for evening and weekend use by students and public patrons. Public patrons do not have library access during the school day. Please see posted hours. Fines for overdue items, lost materials and replacement cards are assessed by the JCPL fee schedule. A yearly acknowledged “Internet Use Agreement” allows access to computer use in the library and all school computers. Students have access to all eleven public JCPL locations’ materials as well as “Prospector,” a consortium that opens collections from other library systems and university library collections. Such materials can be requested and delivered to students and patrons at the Conifer Library. Newsletter, Reader’s Advisory, Pathfinders, and Learning Modules links. CLINIC The clinic is located in the main office area. If you are not feeling well, please check in with your teacher to receive a pass before reporting to the clinic. STUDENT BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS Conifer students overall are highly responsible, well behaved young adults, and we are very proud of them. Our expectation for student behavior is simple: Think before you act, do what you think is right, and if you are uncertain, talk with a counselor, administrator or teacher. The following behaviors are not acceptable and will not be permitted at school or at school activities. Jeffco Code of Conduct is strictly enforced and followed. This list is meant to be illustrative of unacceptable behavior and should not be considered exclusive:  Truancy/unexcused absences.  Possession/use of tobacco.  Use/possession, or sale of alcohol, narcotics or other dangerous drugs.  Fighting or threatening others.  Defiance or insubordination.  Damage to school property or theft.  Entry to an area restricted to students without permission from staff.  Profanity, obscenity (speech or written form), gambling or hazing.  Possession/detonation of fireworks or explosives.  Misconduct on bus.  Harassment or discrimination.  Gang activities.  Unauthorized leaving of campus.  Parking on campus without parking permit.  Conduct which is deemed detrimental to students or staff or disrupts school.  Cheating/plagiarism.

CONIFER HIGH SCHOOL – Student Handbook Honesty is a value that holds each person to the truth, to tell the truth, and to defend the truth. Honesty results in fairness for each member of the CHS community. Integrity is firm adherence to our values with and without the presence of others. Respect is treating others as we would like to be treated. In an environment of respect, work we turn in as our own is our own. Responsibility is the quality of being accountable for our actions and accepting the consequences of our actions. The Honor Code is a physical representation of the values that Conifer High School should encompass. The intent of this Honor Code is to promote responsible behavior that creates an orderly and safe school environment. The behavior students acquire through their actions is the most valuable gift they can carry with them after graduation, and it is the most valuable gift any educational institution can give. The Honor Code is not meant as an imposition, but rather as a standard to which all students and faculty should be held. At CHS, we push each other to higher academic achievement; this code asks that we hold each other, with the same rigor and passion in academics, to a standard of integrity and of personal achievement. Conifer High School Principles Regarding Academic Integrity Students are responsible for acting with honesty and integrity, and for following Jefferson County School District Student Code of Conduct. Intentional beneficial grading of assignments by one student for another. Selling or purchasing examinations, papers, computer programs and/or assignments of any kind.

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:  The use, by summary, paraphrase or direct quotation, of the published or unpublished work of another person without full and clear acknowledgement. It also includes submitting exams, themes, reports, drawings, laboratory notes, undocumented quotations, computer-processed materials, or other material as one’s own work when such work has been prepared by another person or copied from another person or from a website.  The unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person of agency engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials, including electronic media. In many cases collaboration is to be encouraged, depending on the nature of the assignment. Inappropriate collaboration is working with others in ways contrary to the teachers’ instructions. If your teacher has instructed you not to collaborate and you do so, it is cheating. Unless otherwise instructed by your teacher, the tasks you complete are to be a product of your own thinking, creativity, and work.

Teacher Responsibilities

Academic Integrity: Conifer High School actively encourages students to incorporate the Lobo Honor Code in every aspect of their daily lives. The honor code, rooted in the virtues of Honesty, Integrity, Respect, and Responsibility, is the core of Lobo pride. Occasionally, this trust is violated when academic misconduct occurs, either inadvertently or deliberately. Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, and knowingly making possible any act of misconduct. Violations of academic integrity may result in actions outlined in the CHS Honor Code. Serious and/or habitual violations of the Honor

MANDATORY EXPULSIONS Colorado School Law and Jefferson County Board Policy requires expulsion for the following offenses:  Carrying, bringing, using or possession of any deadly weapon.  Sale, exchange, distribution or gift of drugs or any controlled substances.  Habitually disruptive student behavior. WEAPONS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS Any kind of weapons either real or fake, are not to be brought to school or any school sponsored activity. Students who bring weapons onto campus may be suspended and may be expelled from Jefferson County Public Schools. STUDENT ID CARDS All Conifer students will be issued an ID card. Your ID card should be carried at all times and presented at the request of any school authority. Loss or theft of this card should be reported to the campus supervisor. There will be a $5.00 cost for replacement. Your ID card will be needed to use a computer and to ride any district transportation. STUDENT PRANKS Depending on the severity of any prank that occurs, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken, including expulsion and/or withholding the diploma. have the following results: the offender(s) being prohibited from participating in the graduation ceremony and the offender(s) paying for all damages before diploma(s) will be mailed to them. ELECTRONIC DEVICES/CELL PHONES (BYOD) Teachers have class rules surrounding the use of electronic devices and cell phones. Students are expected to abide by these rules. In order for students to access the wireless network at Conifer, parents and students must agree to the district policy for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), which is accessed through Jeffco Connect under the Agreements tab.

TECHNOLOGY USE Use of technology and the Internet is only for assigned projects and activities related to school. Students must have their student ID to log into the computer system in the library. STUDENTS WILL LOGIN ONLY UNDER THEIR ACCOUNTS. *Do not tamper with security software or alter the software/hardware content of the computers. This includes deleting files, downloading programs, and copying commercial programs, etc. Take care of the technology equipment and it will work when you need it. TEXTBOOK CARE Each student is expected to care for his/her textbooks to avoid a fine when books are returned. Students will be charged a replacement fee for lost or damaged textbooks. VANDALISM Any intentional vandalism on school property or to school property may cause the student/parent to be held liable. VISITORS IN THE BUILDING Adults wishing to visit during the school day must obtain a visitor’s pass in the main office and have it visible at all times. We will need to scan your driver’s license on your first visit in our “Raptor” V-Soft system which will produce the sticker tag with date and time on it. When you leave the building, please give your sticker tag back to the receptionist for check out. On any additional visits give your last name to the receptionist for a new tag to be generated; no driver’s license is required a second time.

CONIFER HIGH SCHOOL – Student Handbook Student visitors are not allowed during school hours unless authorized by the counseling department or a teacher for business purposes prior to the day of the visit. Students still need to check in at the front desk in the main office. All other visitations need to be made after school. WHAT TO DO WHEN…….. You must leave school early – Check out through the main office. You become ill – Get permission from your teacher to go to the clinic in the main office. The clinic aide will release you to go home. You lose or find something – Check with the campus supervisor. You change your address or phone number – Contact the counseling office as soon as possible with any changes.
