Leominster Public Schools Summer Reading List Grade 6 2016-2017 School Year Dear Sixth Grade Reader: Next September you will be entering middle school as a sixth grader. Reading is one of the most important activities you can do this summer to prepare for sixth grade. These selections offer a rich world of reading experiences with a variety of authors that will strengthen your reading skills and broaden your understanding of literary styles. Enjoy! Here is what you need to do:

3. Be prepared to share what you have read when you return to school in September
4. Record your thinking by using the student reflection sheet available from your teacher or on the school website

Fantasy Funke, Cornelia – Thief Lord Thief Lord is a story of two brothers, running away from an aunt and uncle who plan to separate them and flee to Venice. Like the bridges and canals of Venice, there are bountiful twists and turns in this lively novel. DuPrau, Jeanne – People of Sparks Sequel to The City of Ember, The people of Ember have come to a new world arriving with hardly the clothes on their back, how will they survive? Realistic Fiction Henkes, Kevin – Olive’s Ocean On a summer visit to her grandmother’s cottage, twelve year-old Martha deals with the death of a classmate, her relationship with her grandmother, and her plans to be a writer. This is a haunting but gentle story about a young girl’s coming of age. Vawter, Vince-Paperboy A sensitive and resilient 11 year old boy who stutters, ventures beyond the familiar and find his voice while taking over his best friend’s paper route in the Memphis summer of 1959.
