Dear Local District Northeast Families, 2017 is in full swing, and as we end February, we enjoyed the opportunity to honor and celebrate the rich contributions of African-Americans throughout our Nation’s history. From George Washington Carver, to poet, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou to Ella Baker, this month offers countless opportunities to learn from the perseverance, resilience, and determination of others. Engineer, Physician, and NASA Astronaut, Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman to travel in space, said, “Never be limited by other people’s limited imaginations. If you adopt their attitudes, then the possibility won’t exist because you’ll have already shut it out…You can hear other people’s wisdom, but you’ve got to re-evaluate the world for yourself.” Today, this statement couldn’t ring more true. Twenty-first century learning tasks students with the challenge of thinking critically about issues to solve problems collaboratively in creative and innovative ways. In Local District Northeast, we continue to work toward developing our students’ skills in these areas as we open doors to endless possibilities. Our Local District Northeast schools are successful because our parents, teachers, staff and community do a remarkable job of working together to support our students and setting high expectations.
