Bohlen Technical Center 20104 NYS Route 3 Watertown, NY 13601 Ph. # 779-7200 Course Description: The primary purpose of the Veterinary Practices Course is to train the student in the basic manipulative skills, safety judgments, proper work habits and desirable attitudes necessary to achieve competency in job entry-level skills, obtain New York State Licensure, and gainful employment in the field of Veterinary Practices or related career fields. Timeline: Length of course/program: 2 year program Half day program Major projects: 1st Year • Build a zoo habitat • Oral presentations • Maintain a complete and organized Notebook 2nd Year • Professional portfolio • Maintain a lab manual • Research project Grading/ Assessment/ Attendance Requirements: Knowledge 50% (Classroom activities and assignments, daily instruction, homework, tests) Work Ethic 20% (Includes daily attendance, which is required) Skills 30% (Skills are graded in a practical form during live work or projects)
Dress Code Requirements: Veterinary Practices students are required, to wear closed toed, closed heel, shoes which cover the entire foot, scrub tops as well as either scrub pants or pants have no holes in them. Jewelry is not to be worn while working with animals as it presents a safety hazard. Students who have long hair are to have their hair tied back. Headphones are not permitted while working with animals. SUNY Alfred: Students who complete a 2 year animal science degree will qualify for (3) animal science credits. SUNY Delhi: Students who enroll in the Veterinary Science Technology AAS program will receive (3) hours of restricted elective credits SUNY Jefferson: Students who enroll may be eligible for Animal Management Internship I credit and be able to receive an Animal Ethics course SUNY Cobleskill: Students who enroll will receive advanced credit for Small Animal Management (3) Credits
Internships: In the spring of their senior year, students who meet specific criteria will have the opportunity to experience an internship in Veterinary Practices and/or in a field related industry. Course Objectives: To ensure continued career success, the graduate will continue to learn new and current information related to skills, trends, and methods for career development in Veterinary Practices related fields. Students will be able to: 1. 2. 3.

Respect the need to deliver worthy service for value received in an employer-employee relationship. 4. Perform the basic manipulative skills in order to obtain an entry level position. 5. Apply academic and practical learning and related information to ensure sound judgments, decisions and procedures. 6. Apply academic learning and practical experiences learned in Veterinary Practices field for college or career readiness. Late Work Policy Students must complete a Student Absence Form within 5 days of an absence to be eligible for late/ make-up work (Refer to Student Handbook). Extended absences will be handled on an individual basis.
