PREPARING FOR THE BIG ONE: THE CASE OF THE GREATER MANILA AREA Ø described the potential of the Big One, a strong earthquake from the Valley fault system that will affect the Greater Manila Area Ø elucidated that preparedness, mitigation and response efforts must be enhanced to significantly reduce the risk from earthquakes Ø discussed the key to timely and proper efforts by various sectors of society is appropriate disaster imagination Ø explained that efforts must be enhanced to develop national government and business resilience to strong earthquakes

JIBA RAJ POCHAREL DISASTER RISK REDUCTION IN NEPAL: ITS RETROSPECT AND PROSPECT Ø presented a retrospective description of the disaster management approaches undertaken by the government of Nepal Ø shared stories of success and failure and what should be done in the future in order to address the problems of the disaster vulnerable Nepal were pointed out Ø Nepal was one of the first countries in South Asia to enact a legislation entitled National Calamity Relief Act in 1982 Ø Proposed an Operating Structure for National and Local Disaster Risk Management

WILLAMS INNOVATION AND INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT THAT EMBODIES GENDER EQUALITY: WHAT WORKS AND WHAT MIGHT WORK Ø discussed growing consensus on gender mainstreaming and integration, that promotes progress on gender equality Ø political action, and technical instruments developed for gender mainstreaming Ø policies, laws and quotas; providing help through women-only groups and cooperatives; using the gender transformative approach incorporating gender structure analysis; and gender research
