Take Our Kids to Work Day – Nov. 2 Take Our Kids to Work is an annual program in which Grade 9 students are hosted by parents, friends, relatives and volunteers at workplaces across the country every November. The program supports career development by helping students connect school, the world of work, and their own futures.

EPS Willowbank U-Pick Farm in the Valley EPS students traveled on Oct. 5th to Willowbank Farm and had opportunities to pick apples, complete the corn maze and enter the pet farm.
On Wednesday, October 19th our small but keen Gender Sexuality Alliance (change in language from Gay Straight Alliance to be more inclusive) organized our first school wide event by encouraging all students and staff to wear purple to support LGBT Spirit Day. Spirit Day is intended to bring awareness to the bullying and discrimination often faced by LGBT youth. The GSA also set up a table in the cafeteria during both lunches to raise awareness and served cake to sweeten the deal :)

02 Program Events The Sociology class was on an outing to Shortt’s Lake on Oct. 24th which gave students an opportunity to collect items for their Mi'kmaq Heritage Month display.

- Mi'kmaq heritage month activities. Each class made a poster representing a legend or aspect of Mi'kmaq culture.

- Halloween dance Thursday, October 27th - Drive Away Hunger food collections were doubled from last year. SCA collected 665.5 lbs of food. Awesome job!
Student Services Updates - Senior -On Oct 18th fifty five students from grade 10-12 were bused into the Nova Scotia Community College Open House (Truro campus). Students were given the opportunity to experience several programs as well as submit an application (application fee was waived) -On Oct 6th forty students attended a 1 hour presentation focusing on the Nova Scotia Community College. They were all given the opportunity to meet individually with the recruiter (Mike Duggen) and many took advantage of this opportunity. -SCA has received grant money to assist interested students attend Encounters with Canada. One student has already taken advantage of this amazing program. Interested students must see Mrs. MacLeod by Nov. 4th. -On Oct. 21st eight grade 12 students attended a lunch hour information session for St F X University. -The international student ambassadors organized a pumpkin carving party for our international students. This event was held over the lunch hour Friday, Oct. 2nd. The students had an amazing time carving pumpkins and eating pizza.
SCA Library News SCA Library News Our annual Scholastic Book Fair is coming up soon! The Book Fair will run from November 21 to November 25th, and will be a celebration of reading, offering a selection of affordable books, including the newest titles for every reading level. We are planning an exciting Marvel Comic theme fair with many contests, activities and a family event for students and their families to participate in and get excited about literacy. We hope you will attend our school Book Fair Family Event during parent teacher on Thursday November 24th from 6-8pm, and get a jump on your family’s holiday reading plans. Stay tuned for more details about the fair and the highlights flyer heading your way in midNovember! The library makerspace continues to grow in popularity! Thank you to those families who donated items to help with this project. The library is still looking for a sewing machine and will gladly accept any donations of old electronics - old laptops, cameras, or phones. Small bins for storage are also still needed. Please consider how you could help out and send any items to Ms. Cochrane in the SCA library. Thank you for your continued support!
-Sara-Lynne Lantz, trauma therapist, from the Colchester Sexual Assault Centre has agreed to facilitate a group at SCA as well as speak to classes or larger groups. -All scholarship information has been listed on the announcements which is also on our web site. - Mrs. Macleod has individually met with the majority of our grade 12 students to discuss credit checks, future plans and upcoming events. Upcoming events Nov. 3rd – Student assistance presentation (parents welcome) Nov 9th – Post secondary Day (parents welcome) Nov 22 – Bus trip to visit Saint Mary’s University campus. Sign- up sheet is in student services. Students interested in applying need to pass in completed application forms to Mrs. MacLeod by Nov. 14thand the application fee will be waived. Pick up application forms and permission forms from Mrs. MacLeod.
Music Notes This year, the SCA Glee Club has been asked to perform at the Brookfield Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11th, 2016. The Glee Club students are asked to meet at the cenotaph outside the Brookfield Fire Hall at 10:20am (there will be a tent where we’ll be performing—we will meet under this tent).
