Physics was brought back to the curriculum to provide more opportunities for Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math activities (S.T.E.M.). Students are exploring physics through mini-projects. Students began their journey learning speed, velocity, and acceleration through a mousetrap car competition and were introduced to all the basics of physics. Students were then introduced to the main 3 laws of motion through balloon-powered cars. Students will learn projectile motion through rocket launches in which students create their own rockets and test which provides the greatest launch height. Students were introduced to Newton’s 3 Laws through an inquiry lab. Students were given an assortment of materials and created a balloon-powered car. Students learned the action/reaction forces of the first law of motion, and students saw firsthand how unbalanced forces act on an object. The balloon provided thrust, creating an unbalanced force, and ultimately causing the car to propel forward. Students ran three separate time trials and calculated speed from their data. Students were then challenged to modify their car in any way to increase speed. The overall result was that most students decided to reduce weight and cut away some of the Styrofoam body (frame). This allowed a real-life example of Newton’s second law, force is equal to mass times acceleration. Students learned firsthand that mass (weight) of the car was directly proportional to the acceleration. We are definitely excited about all the great activities taking place in Physics!!
