NEWSLETTER Term 2 Week 8 15 June 2016

Dear Parents and Caregivers

We were certainly blessed with beautiful weather for our rescheduled Athletics Carnival last Friday. Congratulations to Miss Jenna O’Donnell for her organisation of the day, everything went smoothly and all members of our school community enjoyed the day.

POSITIVE PARENTING SESSION Thank you to Mrs Elaine Thompson (Well-Being Coordinator) for organising our very well attended first meeting last night with Sister Jo on Positive Parenting. The presentation was very practical and helpful and there was very positive feedback from the parents who attended the session. If you missed last night’s session, hopefully you will be able to join us for the second session on Tuesday 19th July, first week back in Term 3, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm in the Library. SEMESTER ONE REPORTS Your child’s Semester One Report will be sent home next Wednesday together with the assessment tasks completed in Term 2. We hope that you will celebrate your child’s progress and effort and praise them for the wonderful work they do each day. Please bring the report and assessment tasks to your child’s Parent Teacher interview so that you are able to discuss goals for learning for the remainder of the year. We find it very valuable for your child to attend the Parent/Teacher meeting so that they can explain their work and progress to you as well as be an integral part of planning their learning goals for the next two terms. It is important that every family makes an appointment to see their child’s teacher during the parent teacher interview period.

God Bless

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Work and Pray” FROM THE RELIGIOUS CO-ORDINATOR

Vinnies Night Patrol I mentioned in our last newsletter that several of the staff were taking part in Vinnies Night Patrol on Sunday evening, 5th June. No one could have known that it was going to be the wettest weekend in a very long time! Nevertheless we were not to be put off, so we braved the weather and we are so glad that we did! We were definitely out of our comfort zone but it was a most eye-opening and rewarding experience and one that the staff are keen to repeat. We were able to offer food, hot drinks and conversation to a vast array of people – young, old, women, men, some highly educated – all who had fallen on difficult times. For some what we offered was the first thing they had eaten all day. We shared many enjoyable conversations and a lot of laughs. It was wonderful to be part of the camaraderie of the evening and observe how people looked out for each other. As Mrs McCue mentioned at the School Assembly the next day, we can assure you that everything you provide during our Vinnies appeals is much needed and greatly appreciated. Please keep your donations coming in. Below are some suggestions for the food we need.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Work and Pray” FROM THE LITERACY CO-ORDINATOR Our focus in Literacy over the last six weeks has focused on analysing data from our students writing assessments. We have looked at what the students can do and ways in which we can further develop their strengths, but also support them in areas of need.  As a school, we have focused on sentence structure, vocabulary and punctuation and how by improving in these areas can have a positive impact on our writing.  Sentence structure- Types of Sentences

A simple sentence has a subject and ONLY ONE verb:  The girl sprinted after the tiger.  The cat purred.

A compound sentence is formed when you join two main clauses with a connective. In a compound sentence the clauses are linked by coordinating conjunctions / connectives (and, but, so, or).  I like bananas and I like grapes.  Zoe can be rude at times but she is a nice girl.

A complex sentence is formed when you join a main clause and a subordinate clause with a connective. A subordinate clause is one that relies on a main clause to make sense.

Connectives used in complex sentences include after, although, as, because, if, since, unless, when.  I love roast potatoes, although my mum prefers them mashed.  You need to prepare for the spelling test tomorrow if you want to get all your spellings right.  The big dog barked whenever I knocked on the door.

In Year 1, children start joining parts of sentences (clauses) using 'and'. For example: There was a monster in my room and he was roaring.

In Year 2, children start using subordination, which occurs in a complex sentence. So instead of writing: 'I wanted some ice-cream,' they need to expand this using the connectives 'and,' 'or' and 'but,' to something like: 'I wanted some ice-cream but there was none.'

In Years 3 and 4 they use 'when,' 'if,' 'because' and 'although'.  In Years 5 and 6 they are expected to use 'meanwhile,' 'therefore,' 'however,' 'consequently,' and other connectives.

Please encourage your child to practise writing different types of sentences appropriate to their grade.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Work and Pray” FROM THE SPORTS CO-ORDINATOR

Soccer Gala Day

On Tuesday 7th June, 29 students from Years 5 and 6 represented St Joseph’s at the Eastern Region Soccer Gala Day held at Heffron Park, Maroubra. All three teams showed great sportsmanship and teamwork on the day. Thank you to all of the parents who attended and supported the students by cheering from the sidelines. Special thanks to Mrs Leigh Eaton and Mrs Cathy Truman for assisting the students on the day.

Athletics Carnival  Our annual school Athletics Carnival was held last Friday and what a fantastic day had by all! We were blessed with the weather as the rain stayed away. All the students enjoyed themselves with the highlight being the health hustle, team songs and coloured relays. Congratulations to the Green team who came first on the day. Thank you to GotGame for preparing the students in the lead up to the carnival along with teachers for their constant support, supervision and patience on what can be quite a stressful day. Special thanks to Mrs Cathy Truman for all of her help and support in the planning and setting up for the day. To the parents who volunteered to assist at the carnival, the day would not have been quite as successful without you.

Well done to our School Sport Captains, all of the Year 6 students and the Year 6 teachers for their excellent preparation and time to teach the whole school their team songs and health hustle.

Students have been selected for the Eastern Region Athletics Trials held on Friday August 5 at Olympic Park. A note with more details will go home to those students who qualified by the end of the next week.
