The Apison Appeal MONTHLY NEWSPAPER OF THE APISON, TENNESSEE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH

Panama: Here We Come KAREN GLASSFORD

Jesus said, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest therefore to send out workers into his harvest field." (Luke 10:2) Many in the Apison church have prayed this prayer and are doing their part to fulfill this request for more workers in the Lord's field. This summer, we will be sending out workers to bring the good news to the Central American country of Panama. They will be going with ShareHim and preaching full evangelistic meetings consisting of 19 presentations at each site July 3-22. SOME OF THOSE WORKERS are experienced, such as our own Pastor Jeff Brown. Some are young and inexperienced. But The Lord once told Jeremiah, "Do not say, 'I am too young.' You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you." (Jer. 1:7) They will all travel together, stay in the same hotel and be responsible for at least 10 campaigns and possibly 11. They will receive training, mentoring, and professionally prepared powerful evangelistic sermons with all the graphics that go with those sermons. A group of seven others will join them in Panama from the Pennsylvania Conference for a total of 17or 18 campaigns.

Homecoming Sabbath Recognizes Members Of Long Standing At this year’s Homecoming Sabbath, two couples were honored as pioneer members of the our Apison Church family.

ART AND MARGARET MILES

EACH PARTICIPANT HAS BEEN WORKING HARD sending out fundraising letters, calling their friends and family, baking goods and selling them etc to raise money for this trip. Your financial support will make this trip a reality for the following people: Carrie Wilson, Thomas Holder, BreeAn Adams, Pastor Jeff Brown, Arielle Gearhart, David Glassford, Kaitlyn Williams, Paige Anderson (granddaughter of John and Virginia Holley), Shawn Marias-Clark, Dr. Faith Laughlin, Caleb Holland, Karen Glassford (As the trip manager for ShareHim) and Christina Doneskey (with her mother Odil Donesky from the McDonald Road church). DAN AND JANET SEEBECK

PLEASE CONSIDER INVESTING in the lives of our own Apison Church members for this exciting mission trip for The Lord. Each has to raise $2,000. These funds will cover the cost of one entire evangelistic campaign, the airfare, lodging, transportation and food for the Apison evangelist for this trip which is nearly three weeks long. The first half for each participant needs to be turned in April 21 with the remaining balance due June 1. SOME MAY SAY THAT MISSION TRIPS COST, but I would like to propose that mission trips pay. They pay in lives that are forever changed, and only in the light of eternity will we know the full impact of the difference this summer mission trip will have brought about not only on the precious people of Panama but for each evangelist that will be preaching. Each one baptized will win others and the ripple effect will go on and on. Continued on Page Eight

Art and Margaret Miles were recognized for being members the longest time. It was about 1971, Margaret recalls, that they brought their membership here from the college church. She has done numerous things here. She served as head deaconess for about 25 years and worked alongside Mary Watkins at the Dorcas for many years. Art served as a deacon. Continued on Page Eight

NEW BABY A son, Luke, was born to Ryan and Debbie Harrell on March 31. He weighed 8 lbs, 2 oz. Baby Benjamin is excited to have a new brother.

Noelle Holland and Karen Glassford sang “Via Dolorosa.”

Faye McColpin has returned from a mission trip to Ghana in time to attend homecoming activities at Laurelbrook Academy where she worked at one time. She is leaving again soon for another venture with Maranatha Volunteers in Zimbabwe. Paul and Louise Eirich are going to be gone to Dillingham, AK for a little over three months doing some building and repair projects. “It is an SDA Elementary School. It is not a group, just Louise and I,” Paul said.

Candlelight Communion and Agape Supper Held on Good Friday In honor of our Lord Jesus we were blessed with an Agape Supper on Good Friday evening. Andrew Mashchak began the event with a solo, "I Come With Joy," followed by a blessing by head elder Glen Wintermeyer. The 'disciples' shared fruit bread and fruit salad. The supper concluded with "Via Dolorosa" sung by Karen Glassford and Noelle Holland and prayer by local elder Vonn Williams. We then went to the

sanctuary for Holy Communion where Pastor Brown sang "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded." We were honored to partake of Communion rites and finalize with "Christ the Lord is Risen Today."

Graduation Service Coming May 15 Three young people will be graduating from LCA this year: Victoria Beason, Levi Taylor, and Shawn Marais-Clark. The ceremony will be held at the Apison Seventh-day Adventist Church on Wednesday evening, May 15, at 7:00.

VICTORIA Victoria has attended LCA since 1st grade. She is planning on home school education for 9th grade, and wants to be a nurse practitioner.

SHAWN Shawn has been here since 5th grade, and is going to Collegedale Academy next year. Shawn is hoping to become either a professional athlete or an engineer.

LEVI Levi has been at LCA since 7th grade. He will be attending Hilger next year. Levi is enthusiastic about someday becoming a published author. The graduates have chosen red and gold as their colors. Their aim is, "To dream the impossible to achieve the improbable." Their motto is, "Success is not a matter of chance; it is

On Friday, April 26, from 8:30 to 11:30, staff, students, parents and church members will be participating in a new fundraiser called a trash-a-thon. This is similar to a walk or bike-a-thon, except that instead of just improving ourselves, we will also be improving our community. Students have been (and will continue to be) collecting pledges per bag of trash they pick up. They may be contacting you for a pledge! If no student does contact you, please call or stop by the school and we will gladly collect your donation or pledge for the student(s) of your choice. Your generous support is always appreciated. Pledges usually range from $.25 $10.00 a bag. We need your help, not only as sponsors, but as chaperones and drivers. We also desperately need your pick-up trucks. Ideally, we would like two vehicles (a pick-up truck and car) per group of 4-6 students. 3rd-8th grade students will be collecting trash along back roads, and K-2 students will be collecting trash on the outskirts of parking lots in the Apison, Collegedale, and Ooltewah areas. The money we raise will go to purchase new computer software and other things to help improve our students’ education. Thank you in advance for your vehicular, personal, and financial support. We are so glad to have YOU as a part of our supportive church family. -- Mishala Mundall Education Fair. Come and enjoy the Education Fair in the gymnasium on Sunday, April 28, at 4:00. Plan to stay and enjoy dinner provided as a fundraiser by Home and School.

New in the Church Library

Another Gospel BOOK REVIEW BY STEPHEN SPRINGER

Have you ever, while witnessing, wished you knew more about some of the other systems of faith and beliefs that many in the world are following? A reference book "ANOTHER GOSPEL....Cults, Alternative Religions, and the New Age Movement" by Ruth A. Tucker is a valuable resource to aid your study. It discusses at length groups such as the Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian Science, and of course our very own Seventh-day Adventist church of which I believe she did a very fair examination. "No reputable scholar would claim SDA's are cultic to the same degree as the Mormons, for example.....It is true however that SDA believers, for the most part, warm Christians, and their churches are far more orthodox in their theology than churches in some of the mainline protestant denominations..." While the bulk of the book deals with the big five heretofore mentioned there is also plenty of

MAY 2013

valuable information on smaller diverse groups such as The Unification Church (Moonies), Scientology, Hare Krishnas (yup they're still around) , Worldwide Church of God (also Sabbath keepers), The Way, and numerous New Age manifestations. Overall, a good resource for understanding why many believe as they do, some of our common origins, which may well help as we present the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ to a world that is likely to believe almost anything. Another book which I hope you will read is a series of quotes, and stories ranging from early New Testament leaders, to unknown (to us anyway) modern day martyrs ripped from today’s headlines. This book has the provocative title; "Jesus Freaks/Martyrs' "(HMS Richards Sr. once told someone concerned about the long haired friends of Jesus in the microbusses of the day calling themselves Jesus freaks: "Well I've been a Jesus freak all my life!") This book by a Christian music group known as dcTalk, considers hundeds of individuals who courageously stood firm in their faith in Christ even while facing loss, torture, and death, and paid the ultimate price for their loyalty. Encouraging tales of Christians as diverse as the Apostles, as well as a 17-year-old girl who, when asked if she believed in GOD, was shot to death at Columbine High School. Many stories of Cuban, Soviet, Chinese, and Vietnamese Christians who refused to accept the Communist declarations of "GOD is dead/irrelevant and the state is all powerful", stood firm in faith, and even had their captors turn to Christ through their unyielding witness. Voices of the martyrs from the early Church standing up to the threats of the Papacy, and believers in modern Islamic countries right up to this day. The Christian Church is under attack from all sides as we all know, and hopefully these stories will inspire all of us to remain true to Christ NO MATTER WHAT! These stories must be told!!!

Where Are They Now?

Knapps Report from Philippines

Pris Knapp giving a health talk to the Badjao people.

SHAUN KNAPP

Prismary and I came to the Philippines to work with the ministry PAMAS (Philippines Adventist Medical Aviation Services); I as a Mission Pilot and my wife as the best support and fellow worker I have ever had; she does whatever needs doing. We have been here going on three months and have been blessed by each ministry opportunity the Lord has given us. Learning to depend upon Him moment by moment and having this chance to give ourselves fulltime to His work is very exciting. It’s fun to reach the end of our little abilities and to lay everything before the Lord and then watch Him work; in the end everyone comes away with many blessings. Right now we are focusing our efforts on our northern Luzon hanger and runway. If we can finish this runway we can then move our two airplanes (a Twin Comanche and Cessna 172) here and it will save the ministry storage fees and fuel costs commuting over an hour and a half to the nearest airport where they are being stored. We pray we can also finish before the rains come and stop our progress. We are getting so close to finishing, please pray for us. Most of the flying I have been doing has been transporting missionaries around the islands including our own team. We have been involved in a lot of Medical Missionary outreach and have also been given many other opportunities to preach and teach. Pris just finished recording some health talks filmed on the campus of AIIAS that will be aired on a local Filipino satellite network. Again all these activities the Lord is putting before us lead us to our knees so we can have the strength and wisdom we

need to go forward. We will be here for another three months before returning to the States to tie up some loose ends and prepare to come as long as the Lord wills. We are seeing needs everywhere and realize there is room for a thousand more missionaries in this country. We hope our return trip to the States will be a short one so we can return ASAP. We greatly appreciate the Apison members who lift up prayers in our behalf when we come to their minds. We miss so many of you. May the Lord continue to bless the Apison church and if anyone has ever felt a burden to come and do missionary work in the Philippines please contact us. Blessings in His service. #

LCA Constituents Vote New Constitution MARK SARGEANT

The Lester Coon Adventist School Constituency held its annual meeting Sunday, April 6, 2013. Following prayer, school treasurer Mark Eirich gave a financial report which showed LCA to be healthy and solid. The main agenda item was, of course, the adoption of an updated school constitution, which was approved as amended. After principal Mark Sargeant gave a short report which summarized some of the highlights of the current year, the meeting adjourned. The meeting was aptly chaired by Eric Schoonard. In attendance were 29 constituents as well as Georgia-Cumberland Conference Associate Education Superintendent, Jonathan Sumner. A hearty thanks to all who supported the school with their attendance, thoughtful discussion, and votes. We also thank God for blessing us with a fine school. “Jesus revealed no qualities, and exercised no powers, that men may not have through faith in Him. His perfect humanity is that which all of His followers may possess, if they will be in subjection to God as He was.” The Desire of Ages, page 664

New Classes Offered For Sabbath School

In Appreciation

In Step With Jesus – The Journey Begins The Potters Clay Sabbath School Class is a class for new members. We meet in the first classroom on the right as you enter the church. In Step with Jesus is a series of four Bible study guides that we are using for new members of the Seventhday Adventist family. These lessons were specifically designed for those who are studying with Adventist friends or who have recently become members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The lessons will also be helpful to “renewed” members, those who have been away from the church for a while, or to current members who have recently gained a new longing to deepen their relationship with Jesus. Beginning the journey with Jesus puts us on the path toward becoming like Him. On this path we encounter joy, healing, growth, and meaning in life. The quarterly topics are: The Journey Begins The Power of Love The Power of the Word The Power of Mission It is prepared by the Sabbath School and Personal Ministries Department of the General Conference of Seventhday Adventists. A valuable feature is an online web site, which offers a variety of resources. http://www.InStepWithJesus.org/Jour ney

Becoming Like Jesus You have the opportunity to study the Bible in a simple format, digging deep into the real meaning for you of the stories and parables of Jesus. The Bible will be the study guide for this series. Come and bring a friend as we get to know Jesus in a more personal way. Glen Wintermeyer will be the facilitator of this study in Classroom C.

Collegedale Camp Meeting May 22-25, 2013 Southern Adventist University Collegedale, TN This year's featured speakers will be Brad Thorp, president of the Hope Channel Network, and Dana Edmond, president of the South Central Conference.

“We just want to say thank you to the Apison Church family for their support to our family during this time of our earthly loss of Caitlin. Thank you to each of you who assisted in some way to help in the Memorial Service. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and concern. Thanks also to all who have lifted us up in prayer during Caitlin's cancer and recently for Grandpa Meharry who had a major stroke 3 days after the Memorial service. However, he has had a remarkable recovery, and we are thankful to God for His blessing in that and for the care that he received at Erlanger hospital. May God be with each of us as we journey through life walking by faith and not by sight. – The Meharry Family

Panama Mission Trip Continued from Front Page We believe that "There is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for everyone who calls on the name of The Lord shall be saved. How then can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one in whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" (Romans 10:12-15) Please help these Apison missionaries

be able to bring good news to the people of Panama this summer. You can turn in an offering any time into our treasurer Joyce Estey or give it to Pastor Brown or Karen Glassford who will also turn it into the treasurer. On the check do not include the name of any one individual that would receive these funds. Just mark it "Panama Mission Trip". Or you can mail it in to the Apison Seventh-day Adventist Church, P.O. Box 1151, Collegedale, TN 37315. Thank you so much for your prayers and financial support!

Homecoming Continued from Front Page They remember when the church was built and the school was started in the church basement. Dan and Janet Seebeck were noted as the first couple to be married in the church and for their many years of service. They became members here early on and Janet taught classes in the children’s divisions for 39 years. Their son Danny has been a member here since childhood. Dan has served as a deacon and elder. Both have been greeters for over a decade. There are others who have attended Apison for a good long time. Jim and Ellen Purple came here as far back as about 1970. After a few years they left to start a church in Jamestown, Tennessee. They have been back for several years. Evalynn Buttermore began attending the Apison church with her friend Betty Watkins around 1963, when meetings were held in an old schoolhouse. The group later met at the home of Carl and Sue Nelson. Afterwards, as the new church was being built, meetings were held in the church basement. Somebody needs to write up our Apison history. Who has all the old rec ords?
