The Floor or Integer Part function Greg Gamble
Definition Every real number x can be written in exactly one way as x = n + z, where n ∈ Z and 0 ≤ z < 1. We call n the integer part or floor of x and denote it by [n] or bnc; and z is called the fractional part of x and is denoted by {x}. Thus for x ∈ R,
bxc is the greatest integer not exceeding x.
The fractional part of x is commonly thought of as the part after the decimal point, but this notion is only correct for positive x. We define the fractional part by for x ∈ R,
{x} = x − bxc .
The notation bxc and term floor are supposed to emphasise that bxc ≤ x. In fact, the term integer part leaves a sense of ambiguity when applied to negative real numbers – while the term floor does not. There is also a ceiling function: for x ∈ R the ceiling of x, denoted by dxe is defined by dxe is the least integer not less than x. Hence
( x = bxc dxe = bxc + 1
if x ∈ Z if x ∈ / Z.
The notation dxe and term ceiling are supposed to emphasise that dxe ≥ x.
Properties For x, y ∈ R we have the following properties: 1. x = bxc + {x} 2. x = bxc ⇐⇒ x ∈ Z 3. x = {x} ⇐⇒ 0 ≤ x < 1 4. x − 1 < bxc ≤ x
1
5. If k ∈ Z then bx + kc = bxc + k {x + k} = {x} 6. bx + yc − bxc − byc is 0 or 1 and hence bx + yc ≥ bxc + byc {x + y} ≤ {x} + {y} since . . . By Property 4., x + y − 1 < bx + yc ≤ x + y x − 1 < bxc ≤ x, (i.e. − x ≤ − bxc < −x + 1) y − 1 < byc ≤ y, (i.e. − y ≤ − byc < −y + 1) So − 1 < bx + yc − bxc − byc < 2. But bx + yc − bxc − byc ∈ Z. So bx + yc − bxc − byc is 0 or 1. Hence bx + yc − bxc − byc ≥ 0 i.e. bx + yc ≥ bxc + byc . Applying Property 1 to the last inequality gives {x + y} ≤ {x} + {y} .
Additional properties Suppose 0 < α ∈ R and n ∈ N . Then the floor function has the following additional properties. jnk is the number of positive integer multiples of α not exceeding 7. If α > 0 and n ∈ N then α n, since . . . α > 0. So for some ` ∈ N, each of α, 2α, . . . , `α is less than or equal to n, and each of (` + 1)α, (` + 2)α, . . . is greater than n. That is, `α ≤ n < (` + 1)α n So ` ≤ < ` + 1, (since α > 0). α jnk Hence ` = is the number of positive integer multiples of α not exceeding α n. 2
