The Promise—Part 2

December 13/14, 2014 Luke 2:21-33

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) What God promises always occurs; and He can be very precise in what He says will unfold because He knows the end from the beginning.

2) 2:21 Jesus’ name is the combination of the covenant name for God (YHWH) and the noun “deliver”—“Salvation is of YHWH”  Jesus is His human name.  Christ is His official title.  Immanuel describes who He is.  Angels call him the Son of God. 3) 2:22-23 The first son was presented to the Lord and then bought back. 4) 2:24 God didn’t need the money. The ransom was to remind the people that they belonged to Him. 5) 2:25 Unlike the other religious leaders, Simeon was looking forward with intense desire for the Promised One. 6) 2:28 How could Simeon have known that the Coming One would be an infant in the arms of a teenage girl?  The first Messianic prophecy in Genesis 3:15 makes it abundantly clear that the One coming would be from the descent/genealogy of a woman, not a man.  The prophet Isaiah tells that this Coming One would be born of a virgin, meaning He would have no human father (Isaiah 7:14). 7) 2:30-32 Simeon’s song is a missionary hymn. Salvation is not only for Israel, but also for the World! 8) 2:33 This was the first time Mary and Joseph had been together to hear about the destiny of Jesus. They had been told their son was Messiah; they had not comprehended the scope.
