Several countries have recently applied for membership in the European Union. The committee’s job is to evaluate a specific country’s economy and quality of life and decide whether it should be approved for membership in the EU. You will then present your recommendation to the European Parliament and write a letter explaining your recommendation to the Parliament’s president. Your committee’s task: 1. On Page 2 of this packet, complete the notes on the EU by viewing the powerpoint. 2. Use the data files of European countries to record the economic/quality of life data for Germany, Slovenia, and your assigned country in your chart on page 3 of this packet. 3. Compare the data for your candidate country with that of current EU members Germany and Slovenia. Give your country a grade (A-F) for how they compare to the others on each piece of data. (Hint: use the definitions on that page.) 4. Evaluate the data and grades for your country and decide whether you think it meets the EU criteria for membership. Based on the data and grades, should your country be allowed to join the EU? (Hint: use the EU notes) 5. Each member should then write a two paragraph letter to the President of the European Parliament stating and explaining your committee’s recommendation. The letter should be written on page 4 of this packet. Should your candidate country be allowed to join the EU? Make sure to use the recorded data to support your recommendation.
