Dear District 33 Toastmasters, How many of you were fortunate enough to attend the District 33 Fall Conference held a few weeks ago in lovely Santa Maria, CA? If you were there you would know it was the highest attendance at a conference for District 33 in a long time. Our venue was overflowing with Toastmasters from all over the District which is a nice problem to have. Division E Toastmasters did a fabulous job as they rolled out the welcome mat serving as hosts of our very successful event. I feel honored to have spent the weekend with all of you. Our International Director, Gloria Shishido, was filled with praise for our District and was especially impressed with our contests. From start to finish she was complimentary of our program. Our contestants displayed to Gloria what a fine job we are doing delivering a program of quality in each of our clubs. A special thank you to all of you that served as contestants and Toastmasters during our District 33 Fall conference. For all of you that mentored a contestant on the journey to the conference we also want to send a special thank you for a job well done!! It was truly a wonderful weekend of amazing accomplishments, training, and networking. Lance Miller did a spectacular job with his messages on how to build a stellar Toastmaster club. Many of you did not know that it was a particularly sad weekend for our champ as he had just lost his mother that week, however, he wanted to honor the commitment he made to District 33 and we send him our sincere condolences and thanks for his service to our organization. All of our workshop presenters from Friday through Sunday shared inspiring nuggets of information for us. Yes District 33 it was a conference we will remember for a long time!!
As we move forward we want to keep our goal of becoming a President’s Distinguished District within our focus. Dr. Steven Covey said in his book “The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People”, we are much more likely to achieve our goal if we write it down. The likelihood is increased exponentially if we focus on and visualize a successful outcome. I want to encourage you to focus on success as we cross the stage at International Conference next summer a President’s Distinguished District with the Excellence in Leadership award as we were successful in this achievement of Distinguished or better for three years in a row. We want to continue the call to excellence as we provide a quality program for each of our members. Each of our Divisions has been asked to support our District Mission by chartering two new clubs in their respective Divisions. In addition we are striving to renew all of our clubs to a minimum of 10 members. Keep in mind these goals advance the opportunity of Toastmasters to those that have never participated in our wonderful program as well as provide quality in our individual clubs. This is a win for everyone! Come along beside me District 33 and join me as we work shoulder to shoulder to make this year a year of excellence, a year of tremendous service, a year to remember for all of us. District 33 together we can do this!! Best Regards,
Debby Baker, DTM District Director District 33 Toastmasters

District 33 Program Quality Director Jamuna Ramnath, DTM We are almost five months into our term. Our clubs are performing very well in achieving educational goals. We have ten clubs with 20 or more members that have met five or more DCP goals. Forty-three clubs with 20 or more members have the potential to become Distinguished or better. Ten clubs have met five DCP goals or more and 15 clubs are almost Distinguished with four DCP goals, yet need to meet the membership requirement. I am positive they will all become Distinguished. Thirteen members have earned three or more educational awards. One of the highlights of this year with regards to our educational Achievements is the number of new DTMs in our District. It is an honor to achieve this highest educational award! Congratulations to all 23 DTMs! Congratulations to our top ranking clubs with 20 or more members that have achieved the Distinguished status or better, if current membership levels hold. Central Valley Toastmasters is at Select Distinguished status and is on its way to become the first President’s Distinguished Club in the District. Clubs that are currently at the Distinguished status include Sandpiper Toastmasters Club, Toast Of Sierra Toastmasters Club, Woodland Toastmasters, Mission Chapter Toastmaster Club, Sierra Toastmasters Club of Fresno, Bachelors/Bachelorettes Club, Simi Valley Toastmasters Club, Powerful Voices Club, and Amgen Noon Talkers Club. Let us keep up with our progress to exceed our goals for this year! Thank you for all your your hard work! District 33 Club Growth Director Guy Dawson, DTM District 33 has been on the move since my last message. We are happy to announce the addition of Henderson Toasters #4948682 into our Toastmaster family. A prospective club in Turlock, CA is also quickly approaching 20 members and we look forward to the day when they are acknowledged as a full-fledged Toastmasters group. Over the last couple of months we have celebrated kick-off meetings at ITT Technical Institute in Clovis, the American Legion in Santa Maria and the Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce. A kick off meeting is scheduled in mid- January at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and there are several viable twinkles that are planning kick off meetings in January as well. 92% of our District’s clubs have renewed and are in good standing. There are a few clubs that only need another member or two. I give kudos to the Division Directors and their teams for their commitment to getting their clubs up to full membership status. We still have work to do with the clubs that have not renewed any members. The gift of Toastmasters is one that should be shared with others and maintaining clubs creates opportunities that can be life changing. As anyone who has ever chartered a club knows, it is a lot easier to maintain an existing club than it can be to charter a new one. My first four months as Club Growth Director have been thrilling and incredibly eye-opening. Serving the District in this role has intensified my passion for helping others experience what Toastmasters has to offer. I am very excited about the prospective clubs that will soon be chartered groups. It has been a privilege to work with the talented speakers and leaders of District 33 this year. 2
Interviewing Gloria Shishido, DTM Spotlight
2014-2016 International Director Region 2 By Martha A. Navarrete, DTM Public Relations Mgr.
What are some of the challenges for Toastmasters International? A challenge for Toastmasters International is that we are large. We have 330,000 members around the world. We, Toastmasters, are in 135 countries. We have more than 15,400 clubs and what we want is that the Member Experience be consistent across the world. How do you know you are following the Toastmasters program? Are you really truly enriching that member’s experience? We don’t know that and so that is where the challenge lies for Toastmasters. To really focus on the member enhancement, the member engagement - are the Club officers trained? Are they providing the leadership that we talk about? These are just a few things that we will be working on in the next few years. Why did you decide to become an International Director? Are you getting paid? I ran for the Toastmasters International Director position because I had already been a Past District Governor and the Fall and Spring Conference Chair for five years. I said, “I want to continue to grow”. And grow I did. The elections process in itself is a growing experience. Trust me, it’s very challenging and very competitive! Even though I didn’t have a challenger; it was still my own personal accountability to perform my very best. To me it is important to communicate that my decisions will be based on my values. Of course, I embrace the core values of Toastmasters International: Integrity, Respect, Service and Excellence. That is what drives me in doing what I do. I am not paid, this is all voluntary. I am here at District 33 on my vacation time and I thank District 33 for their warm hospitality, but truly a lot of time is invested. I am in committees, I have board meetings, I sit in District Conference calls if I can, and I truly enjoy being part of the Toastmasters Community. Why are we focusing on opening new corporate clubs? It is our vision to be in every corporation as the choice for continued learning. We want to be effective communicators and leaders and our program really supports both of these two aims. It is not one or the other. I know that most people joined toastmasters because they want to focus in the communication piece, but it is the leadership that has the greatest potential. I know that learning how to lead volunteers I can work and lead and manage in a corporate setting. Volunteers want to make a difference. They are here because they want to provide a service and there are personal interests and gains that one learns for oneself. These skills that you learn are transferrable to the workplace. Volunteers do not receive any pay and you can’t get rid of them, there is no disciplinary action. There is no carrot and no stick, so the challenge as a leader is that much more difficult. You have to use your interpersonal communication skills in order to lead volunteers. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE . . . 3
Interviewing Gloria Shishido, DTM CONTINUED 2014-2016 International Director Region 2 By Martha A. Navarrete, DTM Public Relations Mgr.
Why did you join Toastmasters? Oprah Winfrey said, “Find your passion and you will find your purpose”. I have definitely found my passion in Toastmasters. I joined Toastmasters in 1988 and like everyone else I joined because I wanted to improve my communication skills. I found out, however, that is the leadership portion that has kept me for this long. The opportunity to go from a club on to the District and now on to the International board of directors offers tremendous learning experience each step of the way. I personally believe in continued learning and Toastmasters is the place to go for continued learning. You’ll be surprise what you will learn and what you don’t know that you still have to learn. What is next in your Toastmaster’s career? I am currently part of the International Board of Directors. It is a two-year term, and people have asked me if I’ll continue on and be an officer. I thought about it, but in hindsight, what is good for Toastmasters is to have a younger officer. I am a senior. I know that I am limited in what I can do. Even though I love this organization it’s a rough journey. Five years of commitment on the board as an officer and one year campaigning. I said to myself: No we need… Toastmasters International needs young leaders. We need to draw from members who are in their 30’s to 50’s. We know the value. You and I who are Toastmasters know the value and the transformation in an individual from this shy person to this really articulate individual is magical. Therefore, I will probably be done in Washington DC in 2016 and I look forward to it. I look forward to being a good Toastmaster - going to meetings, adding quality experiences in an everyday setting rather than at an International level. Thank you for your visit Director Shishido. We, at District 33, enjoyed having you as our guest for the conference!

Division A Director Vanessa Thomas, ACB/CL
ALL IS WELL All is well in Division A, we are looking forward to finishing the year strong Go Division A!!
Division B Director Alan Mann, DTM
The Ballots have been counted and Trophies awarded and the results are that Division B as usual, had a very successful contest season. Division B not only saw members excel in speaking, but we also saw new leaders emerge in major roles at the Area & Division level. This was all due to Teamwork by all and, the “Commitment to Excellence” that Debby Baker has challenged us to make. The theme of the Division contest was “The Treats of Toastmasters.” Attendees were given the opportunity to share a personal benefit (treat) they have derived from their Toastmaster membership. These “treats” are posted in the division website at http://www.divisionbd33.org/division-bcontests/treats-of-toastmasters-in-division-b. The Division B & J websites are maintained by Linda Mann, DTM and are a tool to support the local memberships in two Divisions. They supplement the great work done by our District Webmaster Tim Mullins, DTM With Division B being the first Division to renew all their clubs; my area team and I continue our march toward being a President’s Distinguished Division. Division B has two new clubs that are in the early stage of formation -a company club and a specialty club for writers. The Division B leadership team is in the process of planning a great TLI in January with three mini-educationals covering tools that members & club leaders can use. These will supplement the presentation of the officer roles that will be presented. Division B excels because of Teamwork and the commitment of its members, clubs & area leadership. 5

From the Desk of Your District 33 Webmaster What are the District Incentives available to the clubs this year? Do you know how many District 33 members have achieved their DTM this Toastmaster year? Do you know how many Accredited Speakers there are in District 33? Hint: 7 (But who are they?) Would you like to see which clubs have held successful Open Houses in the District? Would you care to view a slideshow of the 2015 District 33 Fall Conference? Are you a club webmaster looking for tools to help improve your club website? Curious to know about the new clubs who have joined our district? All great questions… and I could go on and on with many more like these. But the answer to each and every one of these questions and more are all available on the District 33 Website located at the following website address: http://d33.toastmastersdistricts.org As the District 33 Webmaster I continue to strive to fill our D33 website with up to date, pertinent, useful, interesting and timely information. Division C Director Michele Shafe, DTM
Division C is off to a great start. Our newest club, Henderson Toasters, chartered on October 6, 2015! Our team of Area Directors is working enthusiastically to ensure that all members have an excellent club experience. They are all working with clubs to improve the member’s experience. Many of the Division’s clubs hosted Open Houses and have increased membership as a result. Chamber Voices (C3) added eight new members; Speakers & Leaders of Summerlin (C2) added seven new members; Corporate Power Talkers (C5) added six new members; Saturday Morning Live (C3) added five new members; and Say Watt (C6) added five new members. Congratulations to these clubs on their way to becoming Distinguished or better! Division C is also the proud home of the District 33 2015 Humorous Speech champion, Lory Jones! When I first heard Lory’s speech at the Area C4 contest, I knew it was a winner. Lory competed against eight very talented humorous contestants at the District contest; her weeks of practice and preparation came through convincingly to the audience. The Division C team is working together to strengthen existing clubs and work on club leads for new clubs. We hope to have a club kickoff meeting in January. Area Directors have completed their club visits and offered suggestions to make the clubs even better. Divisions C, D and H are working together to create a worthwhile and informative TLI on January 9, 2016. Our goal is to have 100% of the club officers trained.
Division D Director Lorrie Linnert-Dunford, DTM
The Dynamos are Dynamite!! The Dynamos of Division D have visited the clubs and submitted 100% of our area visits offering great feedback to strengthen our clubs, build membership and meet our members’ goals. We are planning our TLI, teaming with Divisions C and H, for January 9 at Cashman Center. Since all Division D clubs had at least 4 officers trained in the first period, we want 100% officers trained this period so that all clubs receive DCP point #9. To promote our Commitment to Excellence, Division D has a special promotion. Any club which schedules Moments of Truth from the Distinguished Club Series by the January 9 TLI and presents the module at the club will receive 2 FREE CDs from Lance Miller’s collection highlighted at our 2015 District 33 Fall Conference. Please contact your Division D Area Director!!! Division D has 2 new clubs in the works one for Ceasars Entertainment and one for United States Postal Service. Our members have been working hard to compete educationals, and we have received 7 Competent Communicator awards, 6 Advanced Communicator awards, 13 leadership awards including 3 Distinguished Toastmaster award and one high performance leadership award. Of our 20 clubs in Division D, eight have 3 DCP points or more to date with I’ll Drink to That at 7 points, Jackpot Speakers at 5 points and UNLV Toastmasters at 4 points. Nine clubs have added over 4 new members with Summerlin Toasters and Aces of Inspiration Blue each adding 7, I’ll Drink to That adding 8 and Aces of Inspiration Green adding 15 members since July 1. Congratulations to Philip Dahlheimer from Lion’s Roar who won the District 33 Evaluation Contest representing Division D. Wishing everyone a very safe and happy holiday season!

Division E Director Julie Boyce, ACG/ALB
WALKING, TALKING, TOASTMASTER You have seen me, you know who I am, didn’t we meet at the park or was it in the local market, maybe at the Airport? I remember - it was at my local “Toastmasters” Club. I had invited you to be my guest. Our initial meeting took place as I was waiting in line at my local “Dry Cleaners”, you mentioned that the sales clerk was having a problem understanding a customer, my reply was “Toastmasters” would be able to help with that kind of situation. I am a card carrying fully unabashed Walking Talking “Toastmaster”. Whenever life opens an opportunity for me to step up and promote “Toastmasters”, I zero in two or three times. I have been asked, “Do I carry a business card”? “Happy to oblige” is my reply. It’s amazing how many of the public are really waiting to respond to a WALKING, TALKING, TOASTMASTER. Sincerely Julie Boyce. ACG, ALB, Division E Director
Division F Director Sondra Ahlen, ACB/ALB
Division F continues “Enabling Dreams” by building new clubs! Division F is growing with one new club ready to charter and more to come. On November 19th the Turlock Chamber Speakers held an Open House and signed up the remaining 4 members needed to charter. A two week publicity campaign was created to reach the charter goal quickly. Flyers were sent to the Chamber email list and an ‘Event’ was created on the Turlock Chamber of Commerce Facebook group. Invitations were ‘Facebook shared’ and sent by email, phone, and text message, and announced at other local Toastmasters meetings. Best of all, free lunch was offered for everyone who RSVP’d. One of the club’s sponsors organized a 35 minute demo meeting with lively Table Topics and a motivational speech titled “Why Join Toastmasters?” The remaining 25 minutes were used to answer questions and to sign up the new members. The Open House brought in the few members needed in just two weeks’ time. Other new clubs are in the works, including leads in Mariposa, Sonora, and elsewhere. For instance, Division F Director Sondra Ahlén networked at a TEDx Yosemite event in Mariposa, CA. Several community leaders are interested in starting a new Toastmasters club in conjunction with the Mariposa Chamber of Commerce. Division F is hosting a Monthly Club Growth Workshop webinar. The monthly program will include status updates, ongoing training, and club growth team planning sessions for new club sponsors, new club mentors, and club coaches. Join us as we build new clubs and enable dreams in Division F! 9

ALL IS WELL
What a thrilling FALL Division G has experienced over the past 3 months. We are happily reveling in the many accomplishments we have achieved this season and TEAMWORK is truly what it is all about…..together everyone achieves more.
All is well in Division H, we are looking forward to finishing the year strong!! Go Division H!!
I cannot stress enough how much our dedicated and talented Area Directors, Susan Smilanich, Sam Wong, Rose Scott and Paul Laufer have diligently worked with enthusiasm and perseverance to tackle every task on the Division calendar this quarter. I could not ask for a better TEAM to work alongside. Due to their great efforts, my journey as Division Director has been a true joy. I am GRATEFUL!! Division G Clubs began October by adding 75 new members and achieving 90% of Clubs renewed. Our clubs are busy sharing the gift of Toastmasters to many and it shows. We are GROWING!! District 33 held their Fall Conference on November 7th in Santa Maria, CA where many stellar speakers gathered to compete in the Humorous and Evaluation Contest. Division G is proud to announce that our very own Toastmaster, Tony T. District 33 2015’s Joyful Moments...
Looking forward to
2016’s!!! 13
Division J Director Anthony Aleta, ACB/ALB A Season Full of Surprises! The holiday season is coming up and whether it is yourself or a loved one, I am sure that conversations will start turning soon to holiday presents and pleasant surprises. The little kid in me never left, and I enjoy them as much as anyone. However, the surprises are all the more fulfilling when they are all about the Toastmasters in Division J! First of all, I would like to acknowledge Sarah Khan (from Madera Toastmasters), and Joy Gaylord (from Supper Club) for representing us so well at the District 33 Evaluation and Humorous Speech contests on November 7th. I can only imagine the judges using calculators to check their math twice because the entire competitors group was of outstanding caliber! I would also like to recognize Simi Valley Toastmasters, Amgen Noon Talkers and Powerful Voices for reaching at least five Distinguished Club Points as of November 9th, 2015! I also see that several clubs are close to achieving Distinguished status. Keep striving for those goals you set for yourself and for your club! I look forward to the ‘problem’ of constantly checking my dashboards so that I can recognize your achievements. Recognizing your triumphs and the difference the Toastmasters program makes in your life is the best part of my role as Division J Director. On behalf of all your District 33 leadership, your Area Directors and myself, I wish all of you a safe and joyous holiday season. Stay mindful for ideas for your next speech and opportunities to complete the next leadership project along the way!
How to Give TLC to New Toastmasters By Guy Dawson, DTM, District 33 Club Growth Director What are the factors that make some clubs so successful in keeping new members? These clubs generally have strong leadership teams that spend a lot of time developing and maintaining their new members. They create effective systems that introduce their members to the multitude of benefits that Toastmasters has to offer. New members that have experienced mentors who help them discover what’s in it for them are more inclined to continue on their Toastmaster journey.
Here are some strategies that can help your club be more successful in maintaining its new members. Give all new members an induction ceremony after you have voted them in. Becoming a member of Toastmasters is something to be proud of and new members should be properly welcomed into our organization. Having new members read ‘A Toastmasters Promise’ is a great way to get them feel like they are an important part of your club.
Assign new members to helper roles right away. Getting new members involved in your meetings by serving in helper roles encourages them grow at their own pace. They will begin to learn how the meetings function and can gradually take on greater roles as their confidence improves.
Remind them to bring their manuals to every meeting and have their presentations evaluated. The Competent Communicator and Competent Leadership manuals give new members the fundamentals of the Toastmasters program and are invaluable to their success at the beginning. It can be very helpful if they are reminded to bring their manuals and have someone fill them out.
Assign a mentor to new members. The elements of a Toastmaster meeting can be challenging and overwhelming to a new member. Mentors can help to steer them in the right direction and answer their questions. Every new member should be assigned a mentor and meet with him or her on a regular basis.
New members are the lifeblood of Toastmasters and we must show them how much they mean to us. Take the time to nurture the newbies in your club. You might be supporting the development of the next World Champion of Public Speaking or District Director.

New Term, New Officers If your club is weekly, then it’s time again to elect new officers, for the January 1 st to June 30th term. And submit the names to Toastmasters International on time to earn your DCP point. What? You say you didn’t know that, you don’t know how? OK, it’s not too difficult, read on and I will lay it out for you. The Secretary of the club is the officer that is supposed to submit the names; however, any officer of the club has access if the secretary is unavailable for some reason. First, log in to the Toastmasters International website. If you don’t know your access, click on Forgot Password and follow the instructions to get your access. You will receive an email to reset your password. Once you’re logged in, click on Leadership Central, then on Club Central. The clubs to which you have access are listed. To conduct club business, simply click the name of the club you’d like to view. Click on View/Update/Print my club officer information. Click on the button for “Future – 1/1/2016 – 6/30/2016” This will bring up a table showing the officer roles with a drop down menu next to each officer role. Click on the drop down menu and choose the member’s name for the appropriate officer role. After you have selected a name for each officer role and confirmed the information is correct, click Confirm. This will submit the officer names to Toastmasters International. Hooray, you did it!!
