Literacy and Numeracy: Year 4 will be studying a variety of fiction, non-fiction and poetry linked to our creative curriculum topic, Rotten Romans. Including:

•Narrative linked to historical settings •Diary entry of a Roman soldier/slave •Play scripts relating to our key text •Non-chronological reports/Information booklets about the Romans •Newspaper report: Boudicca’s Revolt

Year 4 Curriculum Overview Autumn Term 2017

P.E: PE will be on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. One of our lessons will follow realPE which focuses on the fundamental aspects of all sports and physical activity – Agility, Balance, Coordination. The other will a games session. We also are lucky to have an extra rugby lesson with The Wasps during the first half term.

This term we will be building our skills in narrative and descriptive writing. Our key text for this half term is Roman Diary, Journal of a Young Slave by Richard Platt. Next half term we will be studying the traditional African tale Fly Eagle, Fly. Spelling tests will be on a Monday, and children will have individual spellings to learn for the following weeks test. Your child must read each day and their link book must be signed, each day, by a parent/carer as evidence for this and to earn merits.. This term in Numeracy, your child will be studying:•Reasoning with 4 digit numbers •Addition and subtraction •Multiplication and division •Interpreting and presenting data We will also be focusing on maths linked to our themes.

Science – Sound and Light For the first half of the term we will be investigating how sounds are made, we will look at vibrations and how to change the pitch and volume of different instruments. Next half term we will be looking at light through our topic Light Up the World.

ICT: We will be using the computers to carry out research. Mr Mckee will be teaching computing skills, starting with e-safety. PSHE: Our topic is Beginning and Belonging

Themed Learning: Our topic this half term is Rotten Romans. We will be investigating the history and geography and the effect these invaders had on Great Britain. We also will be going on a trip to Bosworth Battlefield for a special Roman themed event. After half term our theme is Light Up the World, we will be looking at festivals and celebrations around the world.

Art/Design Technology: We will design and create a piece of Roman weaponry, for example a shield. We will research and design mosaics. After half term, we will look at the Art work of William Morris. R.E: The aim of our RE curriculum is to engage in enquiry into key questions which religion and world views address. We will develop understanding and skills to appreciate the varied responses to these questions. Music: Warwickshire County Music will be teaching the children how to play brass instruments on Thursdays. French Mr McKee will work with us to learn different colour and animals names. Other information: My PPA time will be covered by Mr McKee who help us with our PE, French and RE learning. Mrs Horncastle will support us with our learning in the classroom. If you would like to speak to me for any reason please come to the outside door before or after school and I will do my best to either talk to you straight away, or make an appointment to see you as soon as possible. Homework books are sent out Wednesday to be returned the following Wednesday. Please make sure that your child brings their Spelling Book, water bottle and Link Book into school every day and that they always have PE kit (t-shirt, shorts, pumps or trainers) in school all of the time.
