Elgin Campus Student/Board Forum Notes Friday, November 7, 2014, Student Life Lounge, Room 1181 Trustees Attending:

Guadalupe Sosa Dr. Barbara Mink

Presiding:

Sylvia Galvan-Gonzalez, Dean of Student Services, Elgin Campus SGA Senator: Ronnie Williams

1. What are the Board’s plans to increase enrollment at the Elgin Campus? With the voter’s approval for Proposition 2, there will be construction of a workforce building at the Elgin Campus to house a veterinary program, an agricultural program, and other workforce programs. Timeline for this is to be discussed with President and the President’s Leadership Team. There is a decrease in enrollment throughout ACC due to high employment rates in Austin. Additional feedback can be asked of the President for the growth of the Elgin Campus. Additional feedback can be made to the Executive Director of Public Information and Marketing to see what else we can do to increase enrollment at Elgin. Early High School (ECHS) Program will be starting some courses at the Campus. 2. What additional programs of study can the students at the Elgin Campus expect to be added in the future? The veterinary technician program is being initiated. A sustainable agricultural program is also planned. Additional sections will be looked at to be offered depending upon demand and cost effectiveness  Spanish  ENGL 1302 – more sections  ESOL  Higher level science courses  All 3 levels of Dev Ed – writing  All 3 levels of Dev Ed – Math  MATH  History, more sections  Chemistry & Biology  Government – more sections  Continuing Education 3. What does the Board have planned for the future of Elgin? Elgin Campus has 90 acres and has the capacity to grow, with Proposition 2 passing, Elgin is expected to get a building to expand the veterinary technician program and a sustainable agriculture program. The Board, together with the President and Provost, is looking at what other programs are in demand and cost effective for further expansion of campuses. 4. Students at Elgin are in need of the same services as the students at all other ACC campuses (Cashier, Student Services, etc.). When can more of those services be expected here at Elgin? Because the M&O Bond did not pass, the Board of Trustees and President will have to look at where the college is regarding resources and see how they can best allocate them. There is the possibility of higher tuition without affecting the low cost that ACC has offered and compared to other colleges.

Currently the campus does not have:  Cashiers  Bookstore (Scantrons & some books are more expensive at Elgin than at other campuses)  Student Life Coordinator  Food Service (possibly talk to purchasing about having a food truck)  Additional Student Services (i.e.- SAS ) Interim Vice President of Student Services is looking into a college-wide book exchange program with students to ease the burden of buying and selling their books back to the bookstore and help each other with costs. 5. Now that the Maintenance and Operations Proposition did not pass, how does ACC expect to support the growth of Highland Campus, the building of the Leander Campus and the renovation of the Rio Grande Campus? The Board and President will need to be strategic in operating the additional campuses (Leander & Southeast Campuses). They will look at how to staff the new buildings without impacting current services at existing campus. Rio Grande Campus will need to be renovated, possibly moving students/staff to the Highland Campus. 6. The Board of Trustees are constantly examining the current and future condition of ACC. How does the Board plan on better utilizing small campuses like Elgin and South Austin? Unlike SAC which is land locked, EGN has space to expand, 99 acres were purchased. With the approval of Proposition 2 and the additional building for the VET –TECH programs and other workforce programs the campus will continue to grow. The Vet-Tech program was implemented here because the community and business leaders voted on it. 7. Is there a plan to bring food service to the Elgin Campus? Based on enrollment and to best utilize ACC resources there is no current plan for food services to be brought here. The possibility of a Food truck coming to the campus may be an option to discuss with the President. 8. Other request and Student Survey Results collected from Summer & Fall ‘14 Over 60 student’s surveys were received. We compiled items of interest that were mentioned by five or more students. Items of interests were labelled as:  Food Services Students wish to have improved food service options and feel that the vending machines are inadequate.  Extra-Curricular / Sport Activities Many students want more social interaction and activities. They stated that they would like to see more activities in Student Life. Several students would like to see a campus gym.  Bookstore Some students mentioned the need for the Bookstore to open more often and have more supplies  Learning lab Some students want the Learning Lab hours to be extended.  Class offerings Student expressed a need for more courses to be offered at the Elgin campus. They would like to see more core sections offered such as English, Math, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Government, and Foreign Language Courses (Spanish)  Weekend classes  Higher ONE ATM Machine The Elgin Campus currently has the A+ Machine but will charge a total convenience fee of $5 for students to withdraw monies
