FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 19:16 A condemned prisoner was forced to carry the crosspiece on his shoulders as he was led through the streets to the execution site. 19:18 At first glance, this verse seems to be an historical narrative. But the factual details are rich in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. Just the thought of death for Jesus was inconceivable, but crucifixion was unthinkable (Philippians 2:8). 19:18 The crucifixion of Jesus by Rome fulfilled both the picture of Numbers 21 and the predictions made by Jesus Himself. 19:19 Who but God could make even the cross a place of dominion, the crucifixion an installation of His kingdom. 19:24 The dividing of Jesus’ garments and the casting lots for his tunic demonstrate once again that God is over all (Psalm 22). 19:26 The inhumane scene is tempered in a flash by the mere mention of Jesus' devotion to his mother. In the midst of His own excruciating pain, His love for His own knew no limit. Jesus could have saved himself, but He would not. He had to bear the death penalty itself…so that you would not have to. 19:28 Even in that moment, Jesus’ mind was so steeped in the Word that He understood the relevance of the Davidic texts to Himself. 19:30 What was finished? Jesus’ redemptive work was completed; sin was atoned for (Hebrews 9:12; 10:12); Satan was
defeated and rendered powerless (Hebrews 2:14; cf. 1 Peter 1:18– 20; 1 John 3:8); Jesus had been made sin for people (2 Corinthians 5:21) and had suffered the penalty of God’s justice. The death of Jesus on the cross completed the picture God had been painting, the story that He had been writing, for centuries. The debt is paid… Ultimately, Christ died not because of any human intentions, schemes, or actions, but because of the will of His Father. God used the schemes of Satan and wicked men (cf. Genesis 50:20; Psalm 76:10) to bring about His purpose: MY SALVATION!
