Wait,…What?

November 16/17, 2013 Matthew 19:16-26

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) 19:16 The young man came to the right source and asked the right question. But he did not understand the full meaning of what he asked. 2) 19:17 Jesus did not bring up the Law to tell him how to be saved, but to show him he needed to be saved. 3) 19:17 A proper view of God causes us to have an accurate view of ourselves. 4) 19:18-19 All of these commands focus on external and observable behavior that others can evaluate. 5) 19:20 The young man was aware of what he did not have and needed…eternal life. But he was not willing to admit what he did have and needed to be cleansed of…sin. 6) 19:21 Nowhere in the Bible are we taught that salvation comes by selling goods and giving the money away. Jesus challenged the man with his wealth to force him to admit what was most valuable to him. 7) 19:22 Many who are penniless are just as far from the kingdom as the rich young ruler was. 8) 19:24 The “camel/eye of a needle” phrase is a Jewish expression referring to the impossible. 9) 19:23-24 The problem was not his wealth itself, but his trust in his wealth and in his own ability to meet God’s standard. 10) 19:23-24 Salvation has always been impossible by human effort. 11) 19:25 The disciples were not merely mildly surprised; Jesus’ teaching cut clean across the ideas that the disciples had accepted all their lives. 12) 19:25 Whatever our wealth, great or small, it can tempt us to selfsufficiency.

13) 19:26 Jesus clarified two things: • the sheer impossibility of any human action to bring about salvation • God is not limited in any way 14) Three things that the rich, young ruler possessed are three things that our culture values most: 1. Youth—In one’s youth he has his vitality, his health, and his strength. 2. Wealth—Wealth affords us the ability to buy all the things we think are beneficial to us. 3. Power—If we have power, we can control our environment, and we can keep others from controlling us. 15) Jesus was not creating barriers, but was encouraging the young man to get to a place where his life really mattered on earth and in eternity. GREEK WORDS Kālâ (kaw-law')—to cease to be, perish, consume, destroy (utterly) Chayah—to live, to preserve
