Summer 2015

From the Director I am honored and excited to lead CMS as we build on our past success and nurture a dynamic, thriving school that engages our students and teachers in new ways. As we move forward, we will stick to our mission of providing the best possible music instruction to ALL. We will refine what we do well, but we will also innovate and craft a freshened CMS that serves the emerging needs of tomorrow. We will leverage today’s technology tools to engage and educate our students. And we will expand partnerships and channels as we reach in new directions. Above all, we will ensure that we remain relevant and sustainable in a fast-changing 21st century environment. I am pleased to announce that effective August 1, 2015, CMS expanded its Lehigh Valley footprint to nearby Reading. The Community School of Music and the Arts (CSMA), which was founded in Reading by the Von Trapp family in 1956, has long been a vital part of Berks County’s musical fabric. After a review of strategic alternatives, the CSMA Board reached out to CMS when it became clear that the best path forward would be for CSMA to merge with a larger music school. In June the CMS Board approved the acquisition, which adds scores of students, 8 teachers, four studios with pianos, and a CMS office at Goggleworks, a thriving arts center in Reading. I welcome our new Reading-area students, faculty and staff to CMS. I also thank our many generous donors, including individuals,

businesses, and foundations for their support of CMS and our mission. Today, 50% of our students are able to learn and make music at CMS only because of financial assistance, discounts, and scholarships. Gifts to CMS directly support these talented but needy students. I thank you and other friends of CMS for your generous support. Please fasten your seat belts as we build an even more vibrant CMS that is mindful of our past, true to our mission, and relevant to more students in new ways. I thank the Board of Directors of CMS for giving me this opportunity to lead CMS into a successful future.

Jeff Reed, Director, CMS

Board of Directors CMS welcomes Mr. Vance Powers and Dr. David Livert to the Board of Directors! Mr. Powers joined the board in February and is currently the Chief Financial Officer of Niska Gas Storage Partners LLC. Mr. Powers has over 25 years of experience in finance, accounting, and reporting. He assisted in the completion of Niska’s initial public offering and its establishment of an investor relations function. He also spent several years as Vice President, Finance and Controller of Buckeye GP LLC, the general partner of Buckeye Partners, L.P. David Livert, Ph.D. joined the board in April and is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Penn State University's Lehigh Valley campus. He received his undergraduate and master's degrees in psychology from Vanderbilt University and his Ph.D. in social psychology

from the City University of New York Graduate Center. Livert comes from a very musical background with his mother, father, and brother all heavily involved in the music industry in both performance and retail. Dr. Livert himself is also a piano student at CMS, studying under Dr. David Saturen. Welcome, Dr. Livert! We extend our appreciation to the following members of the board who have completed their terms of office and to those members who have stepped down due to demands of their jobs and family obligations. To Susan Capobianco, Jerome Frank, Esq., Prabhat Kumar, Rodolphe Tankpinou, David Voellinger, thank you for your service to CMS as members of the Board of Directors. A special note to David who served in various capacities including several terms as Board President – we extend our sincere gratitude. At its annual board meeting in June, the Board elected its officers for 2015-2016. President: Lawrence Johnson, Vice President: Steven Markowitz, Treasurer: Michael Yeager, and Secretary: Dr. Sharon Albert. We thank these board members for continuing in their leadership roles!

Faculty, Staff, & Friends We thank Dr. Deb Andrus, Dr. Nora Suggs, and Dan Magan who have departed CMS to pursue new endeavors. They have helped enrich the lives of their CMS students through their excellent teaching. Crystal Abarca joined CMS as an Administrative Assistant in March. Welcome Crystal! Our intern for the summer is Taylor Cope. Taylor is a Parkland High School senior and studies cello with David Moulton. Here, Taylor poses under one of the new CMS banners in the Arts Park. These new banners were installed in early July 2015 as part of a collaboration between CMS, Allentown Art Museum, Baum School of Art, Miller Symphony Hall, and Youth Education in the Arts, with funding support from a Main Street grant through the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

We extend best wishes to former CMS Director, Carolyn Clarke who left CMS on June 7. On behalf of the board, faculty and students, we thank Carolyn for her 15 years of service and absolute dedication to CMS and our mission. Holly Roadfeldt was the headlining performer at the 19th Annual Contemporary Music Festival at Wichita State University (Wichita, KS) where she gave a solo piano recital. In June, Mary and Ed Schatkowski spent nearly two weeks in Cuba, on a “People to People” tour where they enjoyed the most beautiful sounding a cappella tone in a choir ever heard!

Benefit Recital Series The CMS Benefit Recital Series continued on Sunday, January 25, in the Rodale Community Room. The weather outside was blustery but inside was cozy and warm as two CMS faculty members, Lou Czechowski and Dr. David Saturen. Mr. Czechowski’s selections included pieces by the Beatles, Van Morrison, and an original work dedicated to his father, entitled “Resolve”. Dr. Saturen presented a lively program, which ranged from George Gershwin and Irving Berlin to Green Day and Meghan Trainor. The performance concluded with a lively duet of Duke Ellington's C Jam Blues. Our second Benefit Recital of the season was held Saturday, April 25, and featured Rebekah Graver, soprano, accompanied by Dr. Martha Schrempel, piano. It was wonderful – Rebekah and Martha received welldeserved standing ovations. They performed works from Reynaldo Hahn, C. Debussy, Richard Strauss, Libby Larsen, and W.A. Mozart. A free-will offering benefited student scholarships. We extend our appreciation to Lou, David, and Rebekah for their fine performances! Mark your calendar! Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 3pm is our next Benefit Recital, featuring Rebekah Ruth, piano & Shane Barker, viola.

Student Recitals On Sunday, February 22, the Rodale Room was full for our annual Faculty/Student Recital. The day was both a joy and a memorial, as it highlighted the talent of our faculty, students, and celebrated the life of George R. Schermerhorn, CMS Director 1988 – 2005, who passed away on December 8, 2014. Pieces were performed to commemorate George’s years of service, his dedication to CMS, and his appreciation to the CMS faculty. The program opened with ‘Evolution’, an original piece

composed by CMS teacher, Cliff Tracy. It followed the many phases of CMS’ progression from the early ‘90s through the present day. Performers included Impressions Jazz Ensemble members; Shane Barker, viola; George Fennell, French horn; Janice Galassi, cello, Michael Gallagher, cello; Rebekah Graver, voice; Josh Klein, bass; Linda Kistler, violin; Elaine Martin, flute; Susan Phillips, recorder; John Schwartz, clarinet; Clifford Tracy, saxophone. Adagio, Mozart, performed by John Schwartz, clarinet, and Rebekah Ruth, piano. Gala Auditions & Recital Each spring a number of CMS students are recommended by their teachers to audition before an independent panel of judges. Students, beginner level through advanced, are judged on their own merit, based on pre-determined criteria. Solo performers and ensembles are welcome to participate. Those students with the highest scores perform in the Gala Recital; those with the very highest scores receive merit-based scholarships for continued study in the fall. This year’s auditions were held the morning of Saturday, May 17. Our 2015 judges included Jennifer Dodd, Ph.D., Allentown School District educator; Nathan Eckhart, CFO, C. F. Martin & Co.; and Jill Moyer, educator, member YEA! Our sincere thank you to Jennifer, Nathan, and Jill for serving as judges this year!

Give the Gift of Music

Leaving a legacy for future generations…your continuing gift!

CMS asks you to consider including our school among your charitable bequests when planning your estate. By doing so, you can help make a lasting and significant difference in the lives of music students attending Community Music School for generations to come. The simple gift of quality music instruction to youngsters and adults in our community through private and group instruction has continued since CMS was founded in 1981. Our programs have directly touched more than 16,000 members of our community in just the past 18 years. Indirectly, CMS programming has touched the lives of twice that many - the family, friends, and audience of our students. Please help insure that the gift of quality music education continues to be available to all interested and engaged students in future years by making a provision in your will for CMS. We ask you to consider making a gift to the CMS Endowment Fund. Your gift will make a lasting and significant difference in the life of students at Community Music School far into the future. CMS accepts checks and credit cards. For additional information, please contact the Director.
