The school distributes a monthly newsletter to parents that is developed with participation of the PTO, principal, and staff. It includes school news, a calendar of school activities, and parenting tips related to school achievement. Monthly (Aug.-May) - Kristen Scott, Erin Crawley, and Lorrie Elliott. The school has a school parental involvement website with classroom Web sites for each teacher. Weekly newsletters and pertinent information will be available on classroom Web sites. First Nine Weeks of School - Kristen Scott and classroom teachers Each classroom teacher sends home a folder containing student papers, parent-teacher communication, and homework each week. Weekly - Classroom teachers The school provides to parents in grades K-4 report cards (4 times a year) every nine weeks with information regarding their child's academic progress and study habits/citizenship. There is a conference the 1st and 3rd nine weeks to go over the report card and other information - (Oct. 22, 23, 26 and Mar. 31, April 1, 4) The school provides to parents in grades 3-4 an academic progress report halfway through each nine week grading period. Halfway through each nine weeks - Grades 3-4 teachers The school provides a published list of school supplies needed by each student for the school year. May - Kristen Scott The school offers a school directory with phone numbers, addresses, and e-mail addresses of students that can be purchsed through the PTO. Michele Senlikci, Sonja Barnett-parents The school uses Agendas/Planners for 2nd-4th grade students to provide parents and students with information on assignments, student information, tests, and events. Daily - Classroom teachers The school provides PTO meetings to communicate about committees, fund raisers, and other school events and activities. Twice a year 8/24 and 4/25 - Kristen Scott, PTO Exec. Board The school provides assemblies to reinforce our schoolwide positive behavior plan (BLAST), show grade level music programs, and PTO sponsored programs. Monthly - Synetra Morris, Adrianne Hapgood, PTO volunteers The school provides special services reports to parents from GT teachers, Speech teachers, Special Education teachers, Section 504 designee and ESL teacher. Spring - Emilie Jacobus, Faculty, U of A Athletics A Health Fair is held in the fall to screen students for vision, dental, and hearing. Parent volunteers help in this process by taking each class to and from each designated place. Sept. 2015- District nurses, volunteers, Kristen Scott The school holds a United Way drive to encourage students and parents to give and participate. Incentives are given for the classrooms that collect the most money. Synetra Morris, parent volunteers The school holds a Food Drive to benefit families in need. Incentives are given for the classrooms that collect the most food. Fall - Jennifer Lavender, student council, parent volunteers The school holds a fall, winter and spring classroom parties. Homeroom mothers organize the parties with the help of parents from each classroom. Sign in sheets are out for parents to volunteer to help teachers with volunteering, Root Post Office, and other teacher needs. Aug. 24 2015 - Classroom teachers The school has a Watch Dog program for dads, granddads, uncles,and any other male role models of the students to volunteer for the day to help the office and teachers. It gives them an opportunity to see their child in the classroom and to be a male role model in the school. Thom Hapgood- grandparent The school has designated landscape upkeep and planting days to help keep the schoolyard looking nice. Parents, students, and teachers volunteer to help on a Saturday morning as needed. Amy Partak-Lee, parent The school provides music programs and art shows throughout the year. Parents help with the costumes and the backdrop of the stage and displaying the art in a gallery Four times a year - Adrianne Hapgood, parent volunteers. Twice a year, Cathy Vonhatten, parent volunteers The school has a Multi-Cultural Fair that includes exhibits from U of A students and Root parents and relatives. The event culminates with a potluck supper with multi-cultural food and entertainment. PTO has booths set up for membership drive, t-shirt purchases, and directory purchases. Erin Crawley, parent The school has a Root Run. This event brings together the city wide community to participate in a 5K run and Fun Run.
