Dining With Jesus: Lessons from the Upper Room “The Gift of Peace” John 14:27-31 People are searching for peace and they will try just about anything to get it. But true peace is a gift from God. 27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. 28 “You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29“Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. 30 “I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me; 31 but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here. Verse 27 – “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.” 1. True peace is a gift from God 2. The world offers its own version of peace (Jer. 6:14) 3. Christ offers to give us his peace •
A state of overall well-being (shalom | John 20:19)
•
A reconciled relationship with God (i.e. “Peace with God” | Rom. 5:1)
•
A restored relationship with others (Eph. 4:32; 2Cor 5:20)
•
A renewed paradise on earth (Isa 9:6-7; Rev 21:1-4)
•
An inward peace of mind & tranquility of soul (i.e. “Peace of God” | Phil. 4:7)
Verse 28 – “You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.”
Verse 29 – “Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe.”
Verse 30 – “I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me…”
Verse 31 – “… but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here.”
Conclusion What is preventing you from experiencing God’s peace?
Discussion Questions: 1. Can you think of a time when you experienced God’s peace in the midst of a difficult trial or circumstance? Please share… 2. Describe the difference between the kind of peace the world has to offer and the kind of peace God offers us. 3. Pastor Kenton described five kinds of peace the Lord provides for his children. Which one stood out the most to you, and why? 4. When Jesus said, “… the Father is greater than I…” does that mean Jesus is not equal with God? How would you explain that? 5. What main lesson or idea are you going to take away from the message this week? How can you apply that practically to your life?
