CLAHRC Yorkshire and Humber Delivering innovative research through effective partnerships

We will undertake high quality applied research and evidence based implementation that is responsive to, and in partnership with, our collaborating organisations, patients, carers and the public. The outcome being an improvement in both the health and wealth of the population of Yorkshire and Humber.

National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care Yorkshire and Humber (NIHR CLAHRC YH)

What are CLAHRCs

National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRCs) are collaborative partnerships between the NHS, public services and Higher Education Institututions, focused on improving patient outcomes through the conduct and application of applied health research. The CLAHRCs were set up to improve patient outcomes across the geographic area covered by the Collaboration through three key interlinked functions: • conducting high quality applied health research • implementing the findings from research in clinical practice • increasing the capacity of NHS organisations to engage with and apply research Nine CLAHRC pilots ran between 2008 - 2013. From 2014 there are 13 CLAHRCs around the UK. If we are to face the enormous challenge of heath economics and health outcomes for the people of Yorkshire and Humber, then access to and use of near-to-patient research will be crucial. We have come a long way since the publication of David Cooksey’s ground breaking report on applied health research in 2006 but the advent of the regional CLAHRCs accelerates that process, bringing the research power of our universities directly to the bedside with patients being the direct beneficiaries. It is this emphasis on patient centred research that makes the ongoing challenge for the Yorkshire and Humber CLAHRC so rewarding. CLAHRC YH Principles

Addressing health inequalities We believe that everyone has an equal right to be as

healthy as they can be, and to have equal access to healthcare. Through implementing our Health Inequalities strategy, we will strive to reduce inequalities.

Capacity Building We believe that people are innovative, and if empowered can reach

their potential. Through our capacity building work we will support individuals, teams and organisations to increase their research activity, and through this, the health and wealth of Yorkshire and Humber.

Co-production We believe that all people have a right, if they wish, to be involved in the organisation and delivery of health and health research. Through co-production, we will support the key stakeholders in our work to contribute to the development of better knowledge, healthcare services and products.

Engagement We believe that meaningful engagement delivers successful collaboration that has an impact. Through communicating our passion for the work we do, we will develop ownership of the CLAHRC YH within individuals and organisational partners.

We also work to increase the ability of all of our partners to do more research and strive to make sure the research makes a difference to the people of Yorkshire and Humber. This is all funded by the National Institute for Health Research and pound for pound matched funding from our regional partners.
